As I was going thorough my Morning news paper, I found out an interesting article and thought of sharing it on the toostep platform as it is an important issue for one and all. This news should give the vehicle users in the country a wake up call according to me. As I am writing this there might be a fatal accident that has just occured, according to the UN and the WHO report it is said that every hour in India there is 13 deaths that are happening due to Road accidents...this is a serious number and in the year 2007 the number of deaths was 1.17 lakh, the number here might not be true as many of the road deaths go unreported and we still don't know the exact number. There is an increase in this number as the years have gone by and these road accidents are increasing in Low and middle income countries...and it is also said that by 2030 road accidents will be the 5th biggest killer in the world..

So would like to know what preventive measures should be taken in this regard?

Public&Police mentality.

idea posted by SB DIKSHIT STATE QUALITY MONITOR, U.P.R.R.D.A

Unless public mentality is not changed, which will change by continuous demonstrations and training at x'ings, roads and in classes( from lower to upper) the numbers of casuality are not going to decrease.

Police mentality should also need changes, they allow vehicles to travel in wrong way ,direction ,in no entry time etc.,people also think that they will do whatever they like with the consent of police.

Yes. I support this idea. It is mainly due to public mentality as well as police behavior after an accident take place.

The traffic rules in other countries are much more stricter and the road users don't dare to brak the rules. The reason is they get the penalty points every time they break the rule and when the penalty points exceed teh limit, they will never be able to drive again. Also everytime they renew their insurance, the premium will be increased with every rise in penalty points. Teh poilce don't take bribe or be influenced by the politicians to down grade or ignore the traffic violations. I think in India, it will take a long time to make the road users and poilce to make more deciplined

We must have strict laws and it should be properly implemented by our police. People must aware the traffic rules, from the scholl itself we should create the awarness. In school first aid should be educated, then only we can deliver the first aid to the injured one. In final people must have self discipline.

Scientific Traffic engineering.

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

I have been to US and also to the UK there they have their own scientific traffic systems which does the job for them and there are very less people who are on the roads in the form of cops...cops come into act only when there is overspeeding and jumping of signals, apart from that everything is managed by a proper traffic engineering system that is in place for them, and even the number of deaths that happens is very less in these countries.

I think we need something innovative like this where we can manage traffic in automatic mode and the manpower at hand can be deployed in other areas which needs to be strengthened..

Yes Pragyaji.

Improve the roads, Reduce the deaths. Improving the roads requires expertize in Infrastructure management technics. Even today, NH-17 area near POONA privately maintained is worth it. It works on project and project management.

Reduce the death - this requires simle 'awareness'. We see riding the vehicls with mobile 'ON', chasing shortcuts on wrong sides, daring unexpectedly on 'No entry' roads etc. etc.

If we reduce the second one above, the first one's requirement would reduce, I hope. It does not require any big education for this awareness. Just a fear, a consideration of safety and a presence of mind would help a lot.

pragya you are right but before automating the traffic systems in our country the first thing we should do is to make all roads travelleble. When we travel in some streches of NH17 and NH 47 in my state kerala, i feel like travelling in a boat. the condition of roads are so pathetic that the vehicles travel through foot path most of the times, and last week it even caused a death of a passenger.

i Do feel that the road development should be By BOT then only it will work, otherwise when the allocated money reaches the laying of road surface, it will be just like seive analysis that we do in our labs.

after the road developments attaining the adequate streches of the definite regions according to the vehicular density predicted for atleast 25 years from now. we could bring the automated traffic systems, GPSs, etc

Creating Traffic Awareness amongst road users

idea posted by A R Vinayak Das Civil Engineer, Consulting Engineering Services (I)

Proper engineering alone cannot help to reduce the number of accidents. The government must conduct road safety campaigns amongst public. Special training must be given to police officials regarding regulations of traffic with the help of transportation engineers. Road safety campaign should be conducted be the government at regular intervals so that the public is fully aware of the traffic rules and the safety measures which they have to adopt. All violators should be strictly punished.

There are so many things that can and should be said and done to help reduce so many road deaths. There is no way to completely 100% prevent all road deaths but they can be greatly reduced. People are people and many of them will drive the way that they are going to drive. There should be better guidelines and rules for the road. There should be better safety put in place for people. Everyone should do their part in helping to prevent or reduce road deaths.

There can and should be better guidelines for building cars. There should be better rules on how cars operate on the road and for people who operate vehicles and people who walk. There should be controlled speed limits. There should be more done on a continuous basis to improve road design, construction and management to help prevent or reduce driver impairment. People should be more educated on the subject to help reduce driver impairment or driver problems. People should be held responsible for their actions.

There should be better signs, better traffic signals/ lights, sidewalks for people to walk on etc… There should be more & better regulations, rules, education, enforcement and awareness campaigns.

Of all the ideas given here, I feel this can be the best Idea.I agree with Mr. Vinayak das. Till the mentality of people are changed, traffic accidents are very tough to stop. Just making rules won't work. People are there to break it. Unless their mentality has been changed, it is very difficult to minimise road accidents...

The government should take up propagation of driving rules, ill effects of violation of traffic rules and punishments for such things extensively, paricularly on TV and cinema theaters by video clips.

In my driving experience, I observed the lack of traffic sense right from bikers to truck/bus drivers. While I was driving  along a four lane devided highway, I generally come across vehicles driving in both lanes of one side carriageway, travelling at different speeds. In fact, The extreme right lane carriageway is supposed to be a free lane to facilitate overtakings and high speed vehicles. Since nobody follows this rule, a high speed vehicle overtaking is compelled to shift lanes again and again giving possibility to accidents.

When we will come out of such situations?

Improved Road Conditions and Controlled speed limits

idea posted by Satwinder Singh Program Manager, Confidential

Everybody knows the condition of Indian roads, which ultimately lead to road Jams, delay in reaching destination, improper speed limits, delibrately jumping red lights and finally leading to an accident..!! So improved road conditions and controlling of speeds especially at night time, would really help..!

i support this idea , as improving road conditions will reduce this problem to half.

Road safety is based on three 'E's- Engineering, Education and Enforcement. As far as Engineering is concerned, our highway designs are up to the mark as percentage of acidents that occur due to bad roads is only about 5% of the total accidents. The other two 'E's are the things that require more and more attention immedeately.

1. The Governments should make the rules and tests for issue of Driving Licences more strict. Issuing of licence should not be simply based on the ability to operate the vehicle, but the aspiring driver should be thorough with the driving rules and all related isuues.

2. There should be more checkings and severe punishments to the drivers who drive carelessly and willfully violate traffic rules.

In fact we are too far short of having infrastructure set up in accordance with the population of this country. We need to do concrete master planning for every independent region, be it industrial, agricultural, rural or urban developments such that an social and economical equilibrium is created amongst these categories. Each and every sector needs to be given equal or required thrust/uplift to create equal interest of growt. This cannot be done or achieved by following englisher's guide which we are blindly following since Independence. I am extremely sorry to say we are physically got independence not principally. We had not applied our brain so far in making any meaningful policy considering our base ground. Can you digest that four or five militants can create havoc and shake the whole nation and even thereafter we wait and afraid of such repeated threats. Are we the same Indians of 1947 or become else.

Law Breakers being Fined/Punished

idea posted by ANUP M PATEL Project Manager, Anup Construction

It is one of the most common morning news which we read while having our morning tea.It is not 100% possible for the traffic authorities to eradicate the menace of road accidents but it can be minimize to some extent.First of all public should be made very well aware of traffic rules. They should be told that rules are meant for their own safety.Public means it includes all i.e., drivers, bikers and even pedestrians.Even then those who break the rules should be punished either by fining them or by cancelling their driver's license. But rules should be followed by all.I mean traffic authorities should also take stern against the law breakers and make an example for the rest of the people.I believe that if We,the people should follow the law  .

traffic noise pollution

idea posted by mridul k p Geotechnical site engineer, Edrasis middle east

Now a days when we travel on the road sides we feel like some insects have gone inside our ears, its so pathetic that we don't give any importance to the parameters that effect human health in our country.accidents are not taken seriously, now the latest addition to it is the increased noise pollution by traffic.

Reasons like unnecessary horning of vehicles, unnecessary accelerations in traffic jams, also some vehicles produces huge noises like those deisel tuk tuks, some altered bikes.

most zones in our country, that is zoned by our governmental departments is critically harmed by the noise pollutions, for example the silent zones where the noise levels to be limited to 50decibals. But now recent studies shows those zones recording more than 100 decibals.

what i feel is that the time has reached to start the designs based on noise considerations.

noise barries, trees, glassed buildings are becoming a necessary now a days to keep man healty. Or we will be forced to see our future generations with ear impairments,

noise is another reason. why people are forced to horn, its because of over speed.

again it results in accidents.

I agree that erceting noise barriers and raising avenue trees etc. are essential. But  regarding sounding horn, I am of the poenion that mindset of Indian public is not yet matured so that they follow the traffic rules and stick to proper lane giving no chance to sound horn.

In my experience, I came across several incidents in which no driver has cared despite of sounding horn repeatedly eventhough the road ahead and on sides was clear.

Traffic Accidents

idea posted by Sai Krishna Kolluru Sr. Design Engineer (Highways and Transportation), Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Private Limited

India is losing about 55000 Crore because of accidents, more over it is 3 percent of GDP, since our School curriculu also does't have any lessons regarding Traffic Rules and Regulations. It is better to educate children in Schools itself regarding Traffic by introducing one lesson mandatory.

Very good idea. Tuning the minds right from child hood by educating them on traffic sense and rules  really helps a lot. Some lessons should be allocated to these topics in Social Studies textbooks.

There are lot more ethical problems in the pipeline we should be ready to face. Prime object of Best management is not to find solutions of problems but not to allow problems to crop up. In fact we are to indecipline & uneducated to even donot afraid of jumping on each other to arrest our selfishness. It feels me very stupid when some one talk about UK, US or else. They first brought a setup of good education, decipline and patriotic values with a meaningfull methodology and now behaving accordingly but we blindly followed the system of 'Gulam India".We need to change system and pattern to achieve morality, pateince, decipline, patriotism and meaningfull targets for socio upliftment then everything will get all right. We must utilise our basic resources and knowldge.

widen the roads

idea posted by HASAN SHAIK ABDUL CADER CEO/MD/Director, B and A PRIMEDEVELOPERS(p)LTD

i am  road accident victim suffered with major injuries by 21st june2007 and have a miracle escape, co-passenger died on spot, since now am suffering with the worst impact. the accident haapened at nite time (10.45pm) due to the halted TRACTOR only on the left side of road , without having a parking/hazard lamp/indicator,(the tractor having a note as -only for agricultural use.., but carrying full load of BRICK FOR CONSTRUCTION USAGE), in this incident i understand ,

  1. the law agency must be tough to handle the ROAD ACCIDENT CASES, they should seize the vehicle.
  2. since the width and size of roads must be widen or alter in proportion with the vehicles usage,
  3. compulsary educational qualification must be considered for issuing DRIVING LICENCE
  4. a separate service lane must be allot to have the vehicle parking/break down vehicles.
  5. provide compulsory raod safety education at school and college level atleast 15mins-40 mins in a week at evening hours combing with the physical education session .

let we all support governemnt to improve the standard of roads, and motivate pepoles to avoid rash driving
