It is said that in the next two decades, global water consumption will increase from the present 4,500 billion cubic metres (bcm) to 6,900 bcm. This will be 40% more than the estimated reliable and sustainable supply today, if no action is taken to conserve water and use it more efficiently. This is the conclusion of a study on the global water scenario by international consultancy McKinsey, in collaboration with the World Bank affiliate, International Finance Corporation.

The situation in India will be dire as water demand will grow annually by 2.8% to reach a whopping 1,500 bcm while supply is projected at only about 744 bcm, that is, just half the demand, according to the report.

So people, how can we bridge that gap? and How can we bring the sustainable use of water in present day?, so that we can learn to save water and use it more efficiently. Do share your views on this important issue which needs immediate action from one & all.

Rain water harvesting!!

idea posted by Manish N Chugh Officer Trainee, Stock Holding Corporation of India ltd.,

I feel RAIN WATER HARVESTING is the optimum option which can solve the water problem to greater extent. This will make use of the rain water which these days only get added to lakes/river and go waste in hard surfaces in most of the urban areas where there is no proper drainage system too. Therefore, i feel implementing this in all the houses/apartments/comercial units..... will reduce the gap which is growing at faster pace these days... Thank you, Manish N.

Cheers!!

Rain water harvesting is best option for doubling the consumption of water.. if all people starts applying this at there home, i'm sure definitely we'll  achieve that target...

Now a days we see that due to floods precious water is being allowed to flow into the sea.

The construction of checkdams nearer to the river flows and lowlying area can help in storing wateras well as reduction in the fury of the floods.

The same water stored in with the help of checkdams improveswater table level helping inconservation of water.

Develop sip water capsule

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The concern being expressed the world over for paucity of water and water resources is not unfounded. The water is rudimentary requirement not only for humans but also for other species. The Germans have therefore been drinking cola instead of water to conserve water. The instinct for servival is very strong in all the species. The humans are more adapt to any situation and hence the present population. The scietists world over should work for an alternate source like capsule and also modified deit so that human race could servive without impending holocaust of world war III for water. In the meantime, till the time alternative source is developed,we must conserve water by channelising rain water and also develop scheme to treat sea water.

The idea of using coke and capsules as an alternative of water seems very innovative but is far away from reality. During design of water supply systems (water tank etc.), in India per head daily water consumption is assumed as 135 litres. Out of this 135 litres only five litres or less is used by a person for drinking purpose. Also human body is made of five basic elements which are water, air, earth ,fire, and sky (ie astronomical component). Using capsule means eliminating one of these five elements ( ie .water) will violet the law of nature and ultimately brings disaster to human life.

The linking of rivers will not serve any pupose. We have seen flurry of rivers. The more u channelise the more furious these become. The water harvesting is good.but how far,the farmers are boring the field for irrigation purpose. The builders in an efforts to lure the prospective buyers, are boring the area to ensure water supply. Our water policy is totally failed. This will continue till governance improves. The government has to draw a plan to rationalize water policy. This is a tall order. No body acknowledges, that in order to increase food production, chemical fertilizer is being indiscriminately used. The irrigation water requirement has also increased comparing natural fertilzer. The global warming will also sock water leaving 75% of aquifers within 25 years in critical condition("Shifting the goal post' by Sh Arun Maira,The writer is with Bosten consulting Group)There is therefore no alternative  to sip water capsule.

The latest update is that sientists are developing Non veg diet from biotech. To reduce co2,scheme is being dveloped to suck emission gases.i mean there is sufficient time to develop alternate source of water.Otherwise in order to fullfill the requirement ,we may encroach upon the teritorry of birds and animals. The eco balance wil get grossly disturbed. For the benifit of the Mr Mishra and others, though it is not an issue at all i am giving formula of coca cola, which is stated to be found from old books owned by John.S.Pemberlan.the inventor of the coca cola before his death in 1888.

Ingradients

River linking, using rain water harvesting and desalination

The most of river water because of mismanagement flows into sea and thus becomes unavailable for it's effective use. If one looks at the serious shortfall of water rain harvesting and many other ideas related to water management can deinately contribute but river linking will have lion' share in all of them

linking of rivers is a good idea. proper care should be taken  toaviod floods, while measuring the flow to link the rivers.  Creation of resorvoirs can help in maintaining the water table.

Every year we waste large quantities of fresh water into seas. The storage levels have come down due to encroachment and exploitation for various purposes. Linking the rivers and taking water into remote parts of India so that water is not wasted.

Karnataka has been pioneering and decades ahead of other states in this regard. Since Independance Karnataka has been building dams and canals so that water is not wasted into seas when it is passed on to Andhra and Tamil Nadu.

Visit the sitehttp://waterresources.kar.nic.in/projects.htm

and one can see how relentlessly the engineers of Karnataka have been pursuing water management projects in their state. Good efforts but will our bureaucrats from other states implement the same in their states.

DeSalination

idea posted by Balaji Nagarajan Sr Manager Marketing Services, Congruent Solutions Private Ltd

Given the fact that we have abundant sea water around us - de salination could be a viable option given the limitations of supply deficiency we are going to face in the future. De salination offers producing water at a commercially feasible cost though it takes large investments upfront. So if this initiative is supported or partially funded by the government it will be a great success

Does not impact th ecosystem and offers virtually unlimited supply source with 70% of the earth's surface. Moreover with all the global warming it probably makes sense to put some of that sea water into circulation on land.

new National Water Policy 2010

idea posted by Rijo Stephen Cletus Business Analyst / Consultant for IT, Hospitals and Healthcare Sector

The Central government should seriously think about a new National Water Policy for 2010.  This is also to achieve the 7th Goal of the UN MDG - United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which states - Ensure environmental sustainability.

First and foremost we should have a detailed national WIS - National Water resources Information System.

As part of the new National Water Policy, government can also specify about Interlinking of Rivers, Desalination of Sea Water, Provision of Safe drinking water in belts where very high Fluoride and other mineral content is present in water, Rain Water Harvesting, etc..,  It should also cover rules and guidelines for packaged drinking water companies and other water selling companies.

There has to be a regulator appointed on lines of regulators for other utilities like telecom TRAI, banking RBI, insurance IRDA, stock exchange SEBI etc.,  This will take care of interstate water sharing disputes, Rehabilitation procedures around areas where Dams are proposed to be constructed, pricing of water by private companies and state water supply boards etc.

Clear lines have to be drawn between Water resources and Power Generation etc., without leaving any grey areas unanswered.

Sustainable consumption

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

I think efforts are needed to use water more efficiently in mainly three major areas of consumption which is like, agriculture, industry and municipal or domestic. In agriculture, which is the main concern for India, one should be well versed with package of well-known measures like, drip-irrigation and sprinkler-irrigation to control present flood irrigation, integrated pest management, rationalization of fertilizer use, genetic crops for both rain-fed and irrigated lands, artificial recharge and scientific drainage systems to use rainwater efficiently. Most of these are low-cost measures. And I guess with these techniques we can bring the sustainable consumption and bridge that gap or narrow it some what.

I agree with this Idea of sustainable consumption, where each and every category is covered from all the different formats of water usage, and people need to learn small things like turning off the tap when not in use, and many times they tend to forget these small things and if everybody is aware of their act then we can save considerable amount of water on a regular basis.

Stop Poluting water

idea posted by keshav m Project Architect, adonis designs

Main reasons of poluting water is storing water. We construct dams to store water and use it for industrial purpose which polutes environment.

Second reason is excess usage of urea and other insect, germ killer sprays we use in our agriculture which are againest our culture.they polute our ground water, rain water. as rain water passes through agriculture fields it is getting polted and spreading polution in rivers.

We are drinking same water so we are also getting effected. Solution for it is stop constructing Dams. Let water spread over large area of the ground. create local water bodies such as ponds and lakes.

This way we can even avoid storms and floods.

Stop encroacing water catchment areas of these water bodies. Then water automatically spreads and goundwater level increases. and also is solution for global warming.

Build number of small dams

idea posted by MAJETY CHANDRA SHEKHAR Construction-Residential, SINDHU INFRATECH

Yes, the same can be done by constructing small dams all along the rivers so that the water table in the vicinity of the dam area will increase after constructing. in the areas where the water is not available the same can be lifted from the small dams that are constructed.

Integral water Management

idea posted by Mallaya Pandravada GM-Project , GSSInfraTech Pvt Ltd

The points to be kept in view for integrated water management are as follows.

Rerouting the flood waters through the interlinking of the rivers to be adopted and thus meting out the water demand in draught areas.

Government should declare national water policy for sharing the river waters amongst the states.

Optimum usage of the river water to the last drop should be ensured.

Treating the waste water of the urban areas as well as agricultural drains and recycle it to suit most of the industrial as well as domestic demands other than for drinking purposes.

To avoid the wastage of agricultural water, drip irrigation system for the crops should be implemented.

These measures will certainly augment our water management and meet out the excess demands.

Central water commission is in vogue aiming to control the river water share to the partner states. But still water disputes are occurring between the states due to lack of commitment and coordination. Integral water policy and center’s control over the river water as the common source to be ensured. This can only be arrived by nation wide consensus and a bill in the parliament.

The main issue here is states are fighting for water for eg. karnataka and Tamilnadu, where people fight like anything for  water, so from central Government they should have policies like this much amount of water should be left and states should learn to share water and comeout with better ideas than fighting for water.

Processing Water from various other sources

idea posted by Priyadarshini PROBATIONARY OFFICER, Bank of Baroda

Well we have many sources of water but they r not usable for routine purposes. We can start using new technologies to process the water from those sources. Though they r quite expensive but in future we will be needing them for processing.

We at our own level can stop the wastage, since a report suggests that 40% of the water used in India is wasted. This will help a lot.Other things in order of expense and priority should as well be tried.Rain water harvesting is next easier way to help cause.

Strengthening of Tank bunds, clearing of channels from rivers to ponds and ponds toponds helps in diversion of excess/flood water to these sources which can arrest the wastage of water.

Jan to may is best time to carry out this work  so that water can be stored during the rainy days and utilised for drinking, and agriculture whenever needed.

This process can save the ponds or tanks are protected from floods.

idea posted by rakeshbhatnagar GM Projects., wig brothers india pvt.ltd.

We must balance the enviorment  by plantation, if for roads or other development is carried out by cutting trees . Double number of trees should be planted and taken care that 80 percent must survive.Care should be taken that no natural water resources are blocked.Similarly water conservation is a necessaty, unnecessary boreing must be avoided or it must be taxed to avoid wastage. In all we must try to save the enviorment or water scarcity will make general livelyhood impossible.Pragya ji you have raised a nice topic thanks.

Stop eating meat

idea posted by Shyam S Project Leader/Managing Consultant, A leading EDA firm

Meat consumption adds to water consumption as well as to pollution. In order to improve the ecological balance, meat eating especially the meat industry must be discouraged.

Water will always be in abundance if we focus on agriculture and other basic needs of life rather than on slaughterhouses and heavy industry. As we cannot do away with heavy industry , we should at least contain slaughterhouses and discourage meat eating / meat industry.
