Traffic jams. Delayed flights. Crowded trains. That is the reality of any big city in India. The future could be much worse. The country's cities are expected to grow by an additional 250 million, mostly young people, over the next two decades. Without massive investment and thoughtful planning, chaos will ensue.

So, what can be done to overcome this situation??

Urban development should become a priority

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

For the first time there's some recognition in India that urban development has to become a priority. It could take one success in a single city to create the momentum for a national push, comparing the current lack of infrastructure investment to the way the IT sector was developed in India. For eg: "When Bangalore became successful, other cities started to emulate it."

I completely agree with Mr. Dipak that we should decentralise urbanisation just view the population stats of last 10 years in any urban area, people from rural area are moving to big cities in search of work, money and providing good education to their children that is creating chaos in big cities, India is still Agriculture based country and government should pay attention to villages and should develop them in such way that villagers can settle down there only its just like nourishing your key strength, if people in villages can get bread and butter there only then why would they come in cities . As far as i am concerned before development of urban area government make some strong strategy and implement it for rural, it will certainly help to some extent .

2

If you ask me, what is more important is urban decentralization.

Look at Delhi. Is there any dearth of development ? Is there any shortage of money pouring in? How many flyovers have been constructed in the last 10 years?Did you find any improvement in the traffic congestion on the roads?People are immigrating in hordes.1200 vehicles are registered in Delhi everyday. And our politicians are boasting how many unauthorised colonies they are regularising before every election.Every body knows the disease but who will bell the cat? Nobody wants to loose one's popularity.

LOCAL BODIES LIKE URBAN DEVELOPMENT SHOULD PROVIDE MULTISTORIED PARKING & STRICTLY FOLLOW SET BACK RULES.

idea posted by rakeshbhatnagar GM Projects., wig brothers india pvt.ltd.

Local Bodies should strictly abide people to follow rules of set back.so that parking may be easier.Planning for multi storied parking must be taken up by all local bodies to ensure appropriate movment of public in city. Parking may be on chargable basis.Entire city roads must be planned in desired width.

stop gap procedures should be stopped

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

I mean today in India infrastructure development in Urban cities is happening just for the sake of it....as and when problem arises they are taking care of it...they are not at all thinking about the future and what will be the number by that time and are not developing it...but as and when traffic congestion increases, they think about creating a flyover or a metro...which not only is causing problems to the public time and again, but also these stop gap procedures are not working at the moment, A stretch of road will be readied time and again, as these politicians wants to please the people, they are not bothered about the permanent solution for these things, and it will remain same if the thinking is not changed in the first place...

Yes, Pragya is very correct.Politicians and bureaucrats are the roots of all evils.I can give some revolutionary ideas and if followed, parties in power will loose their popularity.

I am very sure, everybody knows the reasons; that's why nobody wants to give the solutions.

Tell top ten employers to shift their establishments in the suburbs.See the fun! No boss will like to travel the extra 40 kilometres, because all of them have their houses in the metro.

This is only one idea.

Thanks.

Make Parking Expensive

idea posted by Satish Salpekar Vice President (West), Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India)

The vehicle population in the urban areas has grown beyond imagination. The only solution now is to charge heavy rental for on Parking like most of the developed countries. In cases like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune etc. A vehicle should not be sold to person who does not have a owned or rented parking space. Thi will automatically refrain people from unnecessary buying of vehicles. This will further refrain people from using their personal vehicles while going to crowded areas. To make this scheme effective th local Governments will have to strengthen their public transport.

keep business men out of politics and politicians out of business

idea posted by Saleel Deshpande Sr.Architectural Co-ordinator, Dar Al-Handasah(Shair and Partners)

Guys toostep has so many talented people who now n then come up with so many issues our country is facing. Thanks for the referral.

I suggest which to my mind is near to impossible that is..... our government is run by businessmen who are either very good in politics or politicans who are very good in business. this has brought forth the pathetic situation. We as Indians are a bunch of humans whose brains are wired in a way that we cannot think of progressing in any way without a support.....I keep on stating the same thing again and again that we are parasites....I dont know how many of us have the courage to accept it.

Our politicans and our business men..are not someone who are from a different race they are also indians...then what makes them different and rulers on 110 crores of indians ....who just follow them......its our lack of resistance to them.

Throw these people out of power and stop the businessmen indulging in politics....then u will find decentralisation of power and true growth of our cities in a manner which everyone will appreciate.

This topic is not the one we can comment on in points this is a project which needs atleast one generation or two to prove results.

Install Firm & Disciplined Planners

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

It is weak city and town planners who can not stand up to political, bureaucratic and land mafia pressures and are solely responsible for this mess.

Install and support a few who can withstand these pressures and see how quickly things can change.

It is not as if urban development is not a priority today it is a priority but for land mafia, builders and all other beneficiaries connected to power.

It is just that it is not a priority with disciplined development.

Leave the existing cities alone

idea posted by Sridhar Bhaskarla Bhaskarla CEO, MetaSparc

Governments must identify at least one place in every 100 Sq. KM area, plan and develop them into cities.

It is mere waste of money and resources to keep focussing on the existing cities. Rural population is increasing at a rapid place and the 'earning options' such as agriculture, small-scale industries etc., are not sufficient to provide them livelihood.

Having an urban environment nearby will automatically develop the rural areas surrounding it. Karnakata could have 10 mini Bangalores spread across the state instead of one messy, chaotic, expensive Bangalore.

Develop rural and semi urban India in terms of infrastructure and sustainable income opportunities, which will reduce and may even reverse the flow of people to big cities. This in turn will make it easier for City authorities to manage public facilities better.

Integrate Village to Cities and Localities

idea posted by Ravneet Singh Bhatia Owner, Infrastructure Project Management Group

Every City and Locality should have integrated village.

Village lands are acquires to cater to growing urban population, diminishing the village life style, though villages play important role in catering to daily human needs and city people are only consumers.

Imbalance in demand supply results in aduteration of food, there should be village, land area in city, locality marked as village area.

Government should innitiate steps to integrate village to cities and localities, reducing  congestion in locality/city and making  participation of urban population to take care of village,  making him close to nature.

Thanks Pragya for referral and Anjali for raising a concern on  subject  which every one want to resolve but find helplessness to seek the solution. In my opinion, this problem can be resolved by encouraging commune and  enforcing pool from certain marked posts where they leave their vehicles and use pool vehicles for to and fro to offices, shopping and attending other functions. They may alternate their vehicles. This is the only solution which can be improvised, because  you can not  stop people from  buying the vehicles and use them.

Planning for future

In India , Cities are increasing very rapidly, recently I read one article in Pune Newspaper that according to US survey agencies in future every year one city will grow like New York in India. It,s mentioned city like Pune, may reach upto 1 crore mark, with a view of growing cities. Plan the city infrastructure with considering next 20-30 years. The surrounding areas of cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Banglore, Pune are increasing very rapidly, it is necessary to plan with surrounding areas also.

Promote Public transport systems in urban citites for travelling

idea posted by Jyoti Lecturer, CEPT University, Ahmedabad

Promote Public transport systems in urban cities by developing infrastructure BRTS, MRTS, metro rails so even if people are staying in suburbs/rural areas they can commute easily from far away distances of 40 kms. Need of better alternative for traveling will arise and increase day by day but proper planning of infrastructure development and transport systems is a must avoiding all the influential challenges faced from political, bureaucratic government side. Awareness needs to be created between society and community to maximum use  public transport which will also lead to the problem solution of traffic jam and increase in no. of vehicles. We should take best example of developing countries like US and UK using public transport as there best option for travelling may be we have different sets of problem arising for that but can always promote using public transport system for traveling.

The indiscriminate closing of lakes, drains, and filling up natural sloped landscapes all affect the cities during rainy season Constructing high rise buildings around the cities on ring roads hamper the movement of cold air thus the circlation is affected .the result is that the core of city becomes hot furnace drastic limiting od private vehicles is a must.perhaps colour coding of vehicle name plates for use in different dates only should be imposed

create satellite cities

idea posted by Kiran Sethumadhavan Partner, Sunrise Associates
the best way is to de congest and create new satellite towns and cities in the vicinity of the existing cities.. there is no use in creating newer fly overs and subways while the basic set up of the old cities are congested, narrow and clogged. while we could look at stop gap arrangements like one ways, no heavy vehicles and likes..it makes better sense to develop towns in the vicinity, develop better infrastructure facilities so that the existing infrastructure facilities in the CBD/SBD are enough to carry on with the existing population

idea posted by Biswajit Sarma Project Manager - Construction of Raddison 5 Star Hotel, DS Group
Cities should be expanded through scientific planning with regards to infrastructure like roads, w/s, sanitation and electricity. To deplete the load on main city centres, Government offices should be shifted to outskirts in a single or twin tower. Further, the rural areas should be developed with good education institues, schools and hospitals so that people from that areas can have all the facilities. Transporatation facilities should be good so that people can travel from rural areas to uraban areas in more comfort and in less time.

The problem is no city has progressively developed along the circumference of the City. The City development Authority should not sanction buildings to be concentrated in an area. This is the problem with most of the city. Development should follow along the circumference towards the exterior part of the city and the concept of ring road should be followed in every city.

Just development doesnt means growth. "Proper planned" development is known as growth. In India rural areas are rapidly converting into urban area without proper plans such as roads and bridges. If proper plan is made before hand then India could save more money. India is having poor transport plan. Our government is selling lands near to main roads and market which should not be done as per civil plan and there poor rain water harvesting and worst drainage plan due to which rain water is going waste. We read all this in school but nothing is practical in real life, its just in books. Every one is aware of all these, but nothing is been done. Really i am worried about the future of India...

Pavements for walking needed

One thing missing from our urban planners' agenda is pavements for walking. Even if pavements are there, there are milk booths, lottery ticket sellers kiosks, etc. blocking the way. If you can maneuver around them, there are potholes. With streetlights missing, one can only walk on pavements at their own risk or take the bigger risk of walking by the roadside.

Way of living

idea posted by dommaraju krishnamaraju CEO/MD/Director, wine legendIndia pvt ltd

At one time in the story of mankind, urbanization is encouraged so that industry can grow. A large metropolis has given raise to many problems and in developing countries, lack of resources and unplanned growth resulted in not having proper facilities uniformly.

While enhancing modern day living facilities in the existing urban cent res, the migration to major cities has to be prevented by taking developmental process to 2and 3 tier towns and develop satellite towns around a cluster of villages, so that people can travel less distances to work place from villages they live. A lot of urban facilities have to be created in semi-urban and in Mandal head quarters. Thinking is already there in the minds of planners and it has to be seen how soon such plans take shape and get to the ground.

One striking feature we notice is rural people migrating to urban centers are not able to adopt themselves fast to how one has to live in urban centers. In many parts of Chennai city, cattle is still around and people do buy milk fresh from the milk vendor without realizing the harm they are doing to the health scene. Preventing further urbanization is one thing and how to make the condition better in the present urban setting is another. That is why some one said, we are preparing our selves to live but never live.

Most of the Indian population lives in the rural area. No growth will be of use untill the persons living in remote areas will live a good life. It will be called developed when smile will be given to faces of almost every people whether livin in rural or urban area.I will blame all this unrest because of the unequality and unequal distribution of income. Corruption is the main cause of this.Material and economic satisfactions are not enough

idea posted by shailesh B.B.A student, kumaun university, ssj campus almora

If we really want to develop our urban areas we should give the priority of development of the rural areas. As the population burden on the cities are growing very much so the crime and other unfair trade practises are increasing. Emphasis should also be given to the equal distribution of income. overpressure will only lead to the devastation of  that city, overexploitation of resources, increased number of crime and many other harmful effects. The migration is such a big problem in India from rural to urban. This trend is consequenting in the underutilization of natural resources. That's why India is still in developing stage. This migration has adverse effect on economy as well as very much harmful to environment. I think there should be a balanced way of development for both, in Indian context more to the rural coz they are lacking far behind with their urban counterparts.
