India is expected to receive a World Bank loan of a billion dollars for cleaning and conserving the River Ganga. Minister of State for Environment Jairam Ramesh revealed this after a meeting with World Bank president Robert B Zoellick here on Wednesday.  As of now Indian government is looking at borrowing a billion dollars from the World Bank. The total estimated cost of this mission is about 4 billion dollars.

Why are we spending so much money and 4 billion dollars is not a small number and that too on just cleaning up the river, can't we just take measures to prevent polluting these rivers in India. And this gives me a chance to raise an important question to all the users like, how can we prevent polluting rivers? Let us come up with solutions where we can prevent polluting the river water. Share your views guys.

Stop dumping waste

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

I know for the matter of fact that more than a billion tonnes of waste is dumped in the river ganga per day and not in a month  or a whole year but its in a day and that too 1 billion tonnes, if we are dumping so much of waste in a river like this, yes ofcourse it needs more than 4 billion dollars to clean up the river, so we should stop dumping the waste in rivers, I mean yes it will be difficult to go for the alternate methods which is very less at the moment, I would like to ask users here also like which other way we can make these waste disappear but not find its way onto river.

YES I WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THIS IDEA AS IT WILL BE VERY EFFECTIVE AS WELL AS IT CAN REDUCE THE COST TO REFINE THE RIVER.

  • Will the money get  properly utilized & flow 2 right agency?
  • Can a check be made by govt 4 present/future industrial giants to dump their waste?
  • How can public be made to stop dumping by fine etc.?
  • Is the executing agency fit and not hired by bribes.-- I saw in another post youth pacing lot of faith on Rahul Gandhi.I feel it should be handled by him and it will be litmus test to bring out the truth.

Stop dumping industrial waste.

idea posted by keshav m Project Architect, adonis designs

Dumping industrial waste and usage festicides in fields and farms is the main cause of polluting the rivers. Human excreta and other wastage can be cleaned or disolved. It has been a process throughout the years. but dumping industrial waste has started recently only after industrial revolution in India. Government should permit such industries only in the coastal area of see. not on the riverbanks. If we observe river Yamuna.. It is clean till it enters Delhi. It is poluted only after indulging Industrial waste, and poisonous chemicals in to the  river.  But all such Industries  belong to our beloved politicians who doesnt care about their public and their health.

For earning few lakh rupees extra these people are poluting our rivers. Festicides which are spread over farms will be used onlt 2% of it to kill insects. remaining 98% will be used to polute environment. It is sucha dangerous poison  with which we can kill 20000 people in an hour. I am adding this point by referring the example of Union carbide company at Bhopal which took around 20000 poor farmers life 25 years ago. till now there is no action against that company. Recently govt renewd licence and reopened that factory to show people that it is no harm to use such chemicals in our fields.

Learn lessons from the history and stop poluting water of our rivers

It is not common for bodies to be thrown into the river these days.

Dead bodies thrown into the river is very rare these days. What is more disturbing is the amount of waste from industries, leather factories in Kanpur etc.

If we could stop the meat industry, Ganga would survive. We also need to stop the polluting factories along the river, just as we banned the factories around Taj Mahal.

Educate the populace

idea posted by sanjay dey Tax & accounting , Consultatnt

Our maximum polutation lives in the depths of ignorance, be it in cities or villages. Its time for us to educate them about the dangers and threats from Ganga polution. Religion in many areas have made it hard to tackle the issue, but it is though this religion we have to solve the problem. If Hindus think this is their mother, so they have to be told that you have also too look after your mother. Right now it is ailing and something needs to be done. This people should be asked to come forward and remove the filth. The industries which are poluting must be served notices and make them aware of the "social responsibility." If we  can do this we will not need to borrow loans to give us a lifeline.

It is childish to think that "religion has created this problem" etc. The problem is due to the industries, that are discharging waste into the Ganga. As far as religious functions are concerned, those are the lifeline of this nation and should always be conducted as they are. Please do not bring religion into this. It is a separate matter. We can clean the Ganga by banning meat and leather industry along the river. Also ban the construction of dams on the river and destroy the existing ones if possible. If there is less power due to this, then close down the malls and discos etc.

India must retain her dharma. Then all problems will get solved.(Shyam Mishra, IIT KGP 98).

To increase the tax on industries

idea posted by vinodkumar balikai Advanced Construction Management student at NICMAR, Pune

yes government has to increase the tax on industries for cleaning purpose..depending upon the production capacity of the industries the rate has to be fixed .then c the government ll not get a condition of borrowing the money from outsiders ...

This is for the Indian people....an Idea can change your life.... what if govrnment of India announces a scheme where in it will purchase the dump for x amount from industries and individuals ....I think this will create a sense of earning for all those whose throw/discharge/dump waste in rivers.

It is not the money which will help to clean Ganga, it is the mind and habits of indian people which we have to change.

Money will come and go ( Thru corruption/ Hawala) . only one tenth of the money will b used for cleaning.

So why take borrow.

Only Instructions cannot stop our Indian. They can do any thing for there profit or loss even though they are educated. So might be there is a chances that chalan may work out or at lest it can reduce the dumping of wastage……But not sure.

The main reason behind the GANGA pollution is that industrial waste.if we talk about Kanpur total lather industry waste flowing in Ganga.if these waste removed from the Ganga then half of the problem solved..
