We find KFC to McDonals to Pizza hut crowded. You will see peole buying from lee to wrangler to diesel, puma ,nike and adidas.. Indians to rank in top 5 when it comes to brand consciousness. What is the reason when half of us keep on crying about increeasing rices why do we tend to buy things from such laces which cost more than double to the original prices.

Show off and feel good

idea posted by Purvi Ghosh Marketing analyst, Percept Advertising

We this in us, as human nature. We want to show off and this makes us feel good. People love to say that they are wearing Prada even if we end up with sore feet..

Yes I agree with you Ms. Purvi Ghosh,

People wants to distinguish by way of action, habit, living etc. This is one aspect that we need to understand.

Yes Puravi the Indian mind set is like this. Should we say this is because of long slavery or neo rich people.

I do not think it is show off in every case. Will you guys buy a brand new car for Rs 50,000 from an unknown company in North Korea with rumours that the company produces inferior cars?. So, brand has to be evaluated on a case to case basis - trying to generalize the customer behavior is foolish....

Gives the feel of having made it.

We are a fast developing economy with a upper midlle class that is increasingly growing at a rate few countries can boast of. Many of the Indians have reached the financial stage where they can afford to use branded gadgets, clothing, accessories which they had silently aspired for but never dreamt of attaining it. This explains the sudden surge in the demand for major brands especially in the fashion sector.

Yes! I for once agree entirely with you on this on Shamenaji. It is representative of the sudden convergence of a middle class that today has more money to spare than their earlier generation. Also tastes and priorities too have changed in the spending. The increasing disintegration of joint-families to single family units, where the earned amount need not be spread across others also is a minor factor.

I am not 100% agree with you Namrata.Brand may consider as a acceptance of the society in some aspect but brand means quality, faith, acceptance etc etc.because our society is now become most corrupted and maximum people in this time trying to make money by easy way. So there is a value of brand

Self Confidence

To sit in the corporate world and among high profile people one need to prepare himself or herself and to match with others one has to follow the same as others do....its nothing but such brands gives you one kind of self confidence and reduce inferiority feeling among high class people.

people without money also try to copy for brand.Hence its disposable income that matters.social confidence index gives a value for the brand only and not the living of life for ordinary people

More clarification

Social Confidence Index shows reduction in  citizens fearing unemployment(rich and poor both) also.

It's not associated with a particular section. If people without money are trying to copy "Brand",it

means  they want to show their capabilities, personal ego, self esteem nothing else....

Indian r brand conscious because they can identify the difference b/w quality products. When a company sets up a brand its top most prio is quality then price.

High Propensity to Consume

idea posted by S. Muralidharan Executive Director, Knowledge Foundation & Campus Around the Corner
If one has sufficient money at his disposal, one tries to match up his style with others, barring necessities! I've seen this trend in noveau riche, who have no knowledge about brand, suddenly becoming brand-conscious!

Indians are not at all brand conscious,

idea posted by konkan SINGHA Head- Talent Acquisition (IT), OptedJobs

I would not like to comment on this as I feel we are very much stereotyped and plagiarizing the issue of Brand Goods.I do not care whether people are conscious enough on their spendings for these extravaganzas which the West has ushered us with. We should be concentrating more on securing our self-sufficiency in the field of food-grains as we all know we cannot survive without food and as we can see the next Bubble explosion is round the corner. And for those who are more conscious about their looks and personality rather than securing live-stock will face tremendous hardship in days to come. Branded merchandise and footwear and other irrelevant luxury items would not be able to fill the stomach. for example, during the depression, if a person offers me  a lakh for a kilo of rice, I am not going to sell it as paper money is of no value and yes if he/she offers me gold or silver, I will give a second thought.

N.B: Convert that paper money into standard Gold or Silver ASAP. Pay-off Bank dues and be free of any delinquency. If you do not own a car, do not get disheartened as you have no loans to pay to anyone and at the end, you will be contended at what you have because, it is yours and your families or else blood-sucking Banks will confiscate whatever you have and that is the present scenario in the USA and Western Europe...:)

Indian Mindset oscillates between"Have" & "Haven't".Here,"Brand Consciousness" is an attempt to

increase "Social Confidence Index(SCI)"...

* Social Confidence Index is associated with citizen's ability to cover basic needs

Brand adds confidence

idea posted by Anna George Web Analyst, NichePro Consulting LLC
A branded stuff always gives confidence to the person. It would also give a secured feeling. When the price of Non-branded item is low, obviously the customer will have a fear in his inner mind that the item would get ruined anytime anywhere. Another advantage of branded item is that it lasts for a long time. For example, u would buy a Non-Branded Jeans for 500 INR. But for the Branded Jeans with same design,it may cost 1000 or 1500 INR. The difference is that the branded one would last for 2 or 3 years even if used roughly. Non-branded would become crap in maximum 1 year. So overall cost is balanced that way. These would be the reasons why Brand is given so much of importance in India. Also we see the advertisements of branded items daily, so definitely there would be a tendency in people to possess an item that comes in advertisement regularly. Show off rather than Value for Money

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Indians are much more interested to show off rather than look for value for their money.

Many feel higher price or more advertisement automatically means better quality product and it is for this reason alone that brands keep getting created and getting lost, rather fast.

sense of pleasure and status

idea posted by Seema Partner/Principal/VP, Angel Associates
Buying branded gives them a sense of pleasure and status. Price consciousness has become a secondary thing. People prefer to buy the best and long lasting quality goods. The study by Nielsen "The global luxury brand study" reveals nearly 35% of Indians prefer buying luxury brands which is the third highest. The brands have taken a lot of effort to establish and bring a good will which has created strong foundation to stay in Indian market. People are no more hesitant to buy the branded goods.
