IT professionals face more ethical dilemmas as companies collect more information from customers. Businesses want to gather and use that data in as many ways as possible, but their customers probably want as much privacy as possible. One question that anyone from a Webmaster to a CIO may have to consider is: Should customers who register at an organization’s Web site have to “opt out” to ensure that their information isn’t sold to other companies?

IT managers, in particular, are often caught in the middle of ethical controversies. Suppose that senior management wants your IT department to install software to monitor employees’ activities, but your staff members resent it as an invasion of their privacy and a sign of mistrust.

So, how should IT managers go for it??

Choose the best alternative

Managers also face ethical choices when communicating with department heads that aren’t technically savvy. After all, it may be easier to get sign-off on an IT project you personally favor if you don’t present all the alternatives to the business units.

Because managers are under pressure to control costs, they sometimes have to make “lesser-of-two-evils” choices with ethical implications. When you need to cut the budget, should the cuts come from upgraded development tools that staff members really need, or could you save some money—and keep your developers happy—by vaulting your backup tapes less frequently?

So, managers should convey the message clearly with their employees & go for the best alternative suitable.

definitely it is the choice they have to make from the available alternative. keeping in mind of the cost cut and effectively responding in time both are crucial.

Instead of financial accounting which happens at year end base on past financial data which would be hard to take any corrective actions since the reports are generated at year end,Cost accounting helps to generate reports based on costs ie: your income and expenditure, these reports are generated for current cost data at regular intervals of a week/bi-weekly/month so that the managers could take appropriate corrective actions

For this you need to plan for what kind of corrective actions to be taken in due course, what are the tools and techniques that would help to track your budget and put you on right track, identify risks and risk plans, how ever during budgeting budget for reserves which shall help you a lot  to put on right track for any unknowns.  As explained above if properly palnned, the employees should not be troubled/project them as scape goats at any cost for any failures.

Come out with innovative ideas to grow business

Today's IT managers should first earn respect of their sub-ordinates. Then invest in tomorrow's break-through technologies for growth in order to keep their employees stay engaged. Most of the employees like good work with a mix of everything. Management should treat employees with respect and vice-versa. Once that culture is followed throughout the organization including the managers, automatically the attrition rate will be low hence those IT expenditure on privacy control will not be needed.

Ethical dilema - A burning question - ask to form a Policy

Comanies / Corporates / BPOs and ITESs - they should form a Policy well documented and made known to the stake holder ( including who logs in their websites as subscribers, query-makers, purchasers etc )

Our beloved TooStep has made us known that : They do not share our informations with others.

If not policy formed, everybody, delaing with customers data-bases may feel an Ethical Dilema to share these to their Boss, CEO, CIO, Owner/s. The IT Manager may be the worst affected person in such a situation.
