In a world where leading across a fluid network may become more important than leading from above a fixed hierarchy, being able to effectively share leadership is not an option. In an alliance structure telling partners what to do may quickly lead to having no partners. All parties will have to be able to work together to achieve the common good. |

Today,when inorganic growth has got so much of prominence,when most of the Indian Companies-Public Sector and private sector alike,are queuing up for offshore merger and acquisition,Fluid Management holds the key. TATAs' approach to managing its merger and acquisitions of CORUS and JAGUAR,where they have retained the previous management to carry on with their day to day activities while TATAs' top rung facilitates them with the best practices followed here in TATA,India and also support their efforts,has more or less been guided by the same philosophy and has yielded positive results in terms of smooth transition and homogeneous assimilation their ideas and values.
While on the same platform if we consider Arcelor-Mittal deal,their merger didn't present a rosy picture and the culprit ? Both parties forcing their supremacy/authority over the other.

If we accept that workers of tomorrow need to be involved and engaged in the journey to a common goal , then they cannot be led unless they actively participate in the vision. Employees will have to share in the vision that the leader has developed , so that they can contribute constructively. Employees will be multi-skilled and need to take more than their share of responsibility. They may be dispersed around the globe and interaction will be minimal , only when required. All this means , every employee will have to manage herself. This can only happen if they all share a common dream. Energising everyone towards this dream will be the leader's job. He will have to be a charismatic man manager , rather than a technocrat. |

The leadership succeeds where it proceeds.The days of towering personality have gone.The globalization has brought about paradigm shift in the attitude.The administration or management is not a monolithic block,it must posses quality of absorbing diversity of cultures,languages,foods,traditions and sharing the vision with the people at the lowest rung.The accessibility is therefore very important ingredient for a successful leadership. |

The Britishers have culture of babu what it is called as Autocratic or sophistication in the behavior. It had a layers inferiors or superiors,that is why posts are defined accordingly.The American revolutionized the tradition where every layer is important, no matter positional.This cultural revolution is the genesis of global leadership.This change respects the vocation rather than the position.This has improved accessibility and exchange without feeling of inferior complex.The leader however senior does not hesitate to shake hands even with the junior most.This is the only reasons that Americans are still maintaining strong economy.

A good leader is also a good follower and vice versa. A leader's contribution to the team shouldn't be forcing his ideas, in fact he should just present the vision and allow the team to come up with ideas to achieve the vision,his contribution should be just to facilitate the flow to idea.

Regardless of the boundaries mentioned by you Darshana, the one thing that is most important, at least in professional circles (though I venture to add every where) is that a leader should be a solution provider. He must know the pressure points and provide the release mechanism necessary to make what needs to be done easier to do and enjoyable. In my 30+ years in career, I have seen that invariably, it does not matter if the leader is even lacking in knowledge. If he knows where to get the solution from and can arrange access to between the solvers and the solution providers, he emerges as a transformative leader. I highlight this because everyone seems to be talking about things bounded by national and cultural boundaries. This ability is truly without boundary and is needed by all leaders wherever they are from, whatever their followers do, whatever discipline they belong to. |

As the importance of globalization increases, future leaders will also need to appreciate cultural diversity. They will have to understand not only the economic and legal differences, but also the social and behavioral differences that are part of working around the world. |

Very well said.I would just like to add,Appreciating,Nurturing and Promoting cultural diversity.A leader should be a keen observer of people and their behavior.Someone from Japan is very likely to pay attention to finer details,a behavior inculcated through their culture.Someone from Italy is more likely have a fine touch with design.Some one from China may be more diligent an so on but of course, not necessarily.Now its leader job is to observe their bent of mind and provide them with right shoes that fit.
Next step would be to streamline the flow of ideas within the group i.e. communication.Leader should create an environment,a platform where every one is able put forth their views across the table.
Final step would be to bring synergy in the group.A leader should closely monitor and provide feedback as an outside in approach so that the traits of each member complement that of others.
