We always say that you learn from your mistake but when you are the leader you just cannot afford to make one. What are the biggest mistakes one should avoid?

Superiority complex

idea posted by Gargi Sinha Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

This is worst enemy when you are on top. So not feel anyone is lower than you so you can ill treat.. It applies to everyone.. Even a person who is rude to the office boy is a rude person and creates leadership by example by ill treating the lower people.

Leaders who suffer from superiority complex tend to loose confidence of their teams and will eventually fail

Gargi there are many reason but the superiority complex is a killer and that particular employee do not deserve the job.

Complexes of any kind builds wall in between. People go away from him. The communication gap emerges. To fill this he has to depend on his own men, the cotery. This group of people will block the information process and he will be given with a filtered feedback. He becomes a follower-less leader.

I support this idea as leaders are also humans not gods but rather once a man is in that position he feels like somewhere more than god and considers himself and his doings right always this is where the whole series of corrupt practices takes birth At least I don't agree that boss is always right but he is the one who is everytime wrong in treating humans as humans.........

Fear of Losing the Job

idea posted by Shaswata Mukherjee Student counselor, Rose Bank Edu-Care High School
Being in the fear of losing the job, some accept listening to the blatant gramaphonic bossy dialogging; some express their weaknesses by almost bowing down to the word-horns of the boss; some find it as a way-out to exploit the situation and earn extra chips; some never think of refuting (Gandhism). Had there been plenty of jobs available in the market, 'FEAR THE BOSS' would have been converted into 'BOSS THE FEAR'.

When one dictates as leader it is but natural that he/she feels superior. Main thing is that one should not show this and puts the things into action rather than showing off.

Getting carried away by backscratchers

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

A leader often gets surrounded by sycophants,court-jesters or back-scratchers as you may like to call them. These people are looking for riding the river on leaders back and at times responsible in leading the leader to disaster. Listening Yes is forever pleasing to ears yet has its pitfalls.

A true leader must rid of this menace at earliest to succeed.

True Issac,

The very source of strength can turn a weakness if not understood and utilised well.

Good point. However, I'd like to add that IF a leader maintains a proper one-on-one relationship with EACH of his/her team members [without fear or favor], this problem would be easy to squash.

Given the limits of time and opportunity [Work being juggled along with Family & Society], having cultivated these individual relationships, the leader would therefore have a reasonable/workable model of each team member. This will not allow a sycophant/leech to be a "drag" or a "ball & chain" on the wheels of the team.

Such mistakes are compounded when we forget this maxim of Confucious [do correct if I'm wrong] - "Know yourself". IF I know myself, I know that I happen to be particularly susceptible to a certain thing - that it is my weakness.

Once I know my weakness, I have at least a couple of options:

1. Plug that weakness.

Take classes to better my knowledge. Not that kind of weakness? Maybe, I have to focus on being objective in the face of "temptation". As a workaround, having a neutral party present at times when there is a possibility (or publicly-supposed possibility) of being "tempted" by that weakness - whatever it might be. This neutral party should not know of my reason - once they know, they can't stay neutral. The neutral party may or may not be officially asked to support my normal evaluation of the candidate. This way, a known sycophant/schemer/"mal-resource" will be prevented from "buttering"/sycophancy/scheming. If they are good at their job, they can be used. Otherwise, they will automatically be ejected by the normal Performance Evaluation process.

2. Turn the weakness into a strength.

I don't know. This requires creativity. This is a sort of real-time lateral thinking problem. Trying to turn my weakness into strength has a lot of limits. There is also the problem of disaster mitigation. E.g. what to do if people get to know my weakness.

Some people have even realized business opportunities in their weakness. E.g. Starting a service to serve & profit from those who share that weakness. E.g., a person who loves food becomes a chef (having said goodbye to the regular job). I have yet to do something like this, though.

One way I use a weakness is to reward myself only if I have achieved a personal goal. That way, I manage a couple, ok, a few weaknesses.

Don't Lose contact

Dont lose contact with your staff, be it your colleague, subordinate, office boy or your superior. The moment you lose contact, you are lost. Identify the issue in the begining and set it right. If necessary discuss in an informal way and sort it out.

Leaders think they have the power to do what pleases them, sometimes or most of the time if wrongly used backfires on them. One should always remember very few are born leaders, but most of them climb to the leadership role, these people have to realise once upon a time they where at the bottom of the rung. Leaders should sharpen their listening skills.

Well! Leaders always wants to have a team member who reports on what is happening on the ground level or encourages some one who comes in and bitching of her/his colleague. Leaders have to be fair to all the team members, always treat everyone on par.. Favoritism to be shown outside office hours.

We may work together as friends and at times we may forget we were superiors. Sometimes when you may take a tough decision within the team it leads to misunderstandings.People may take advantage of your relationship with them.So we should remember we are the boss.Friendliness should be there but there should be a limit..

In Politics, we loose the people at the cost of Party Interest.

And in Corporate, we loose employee at the cost of Corporate Interest.

So, the Compromise, that a leader takes at time, decides the Mistake.

Why can't a leader make mistakes?

idea posted by Isaac Madhavan IT / Technical Writer, IT major

It is very simple. "To err is human." That is, it is in human nature to make mistakes. If the leader is human - he/she will make mistakes. ALL things cannot be forseen - a leader would have to be god-like for that to be possible.

There's no need to take on unnecessary stress. It's ok - you make mistakes. What is important is Business Continuity i.e. that there is always a PLAN B and sometimes, a PLAN C.

With this behaviour of trying to be seen as god-like, the staff of that manager get very frightened of making mistakes. What does this mean in the long run? NO EXPERIMENTATION.

That's right. Your teams won't be creative - they will be so scared to try out new things - all because YOU (as their so-called leader) are afraid of making mistakes.

Being ready to make mistakes makes you and your team ready to face many challenges - intrinsic or extrinsic.
