Lack of a platform for common people to participate

idea posted by Tina acharya Officer-Team Leader,ICICI Bank

To me, What's holding India back is a synonomous question to "What is holding me back?"I feel our country is a country of intellectuals.Even a general citizen understands what's wrong and where? The only thing is, there is a lack of a easily accessable platform where a common citizen can do what he/she wants to do, which as a result leads them to be indifferent towards there participatory duty. For example,I know every child has a right to education still I can't help some of them who are denied education and work before me(may be as a vegetable seller,a helper in a shop or restaurant,as a domestic help etc etc..) or simply hanging arroun here and there.I can write a really commendable essay on this issue but I know when it comes to act in real life I don't know how to.That's a problem with the common man. This is a reality in everone's life.Hum kya karein.......lack of a platform where we can address an issue or deal a problem which is not related to our personal life.So I think this is what holding "me" back and holding "India" back.

There are comparatively more platforms in India than China but I think some more improvements can be done here. Like formation of local societies, members of whom personally know each other and residents. Now imagine how easy it is to file for a complaint against child labour or to reach the local MLA and discuss any prevalent problems in the area through this society. Individually its very difficult to get a job done, through societies it can be lot easier to get the attention of police, MLA, media etc.

I don't think that there is ever lack of platform in a democracy. It is all about the intent. If we intent to have a common man stamp & blame it to system, then none can help. In fact a number of  people use democracy in a particpatory mode & successfully reaped good things for the society, nation & community. Right to Education, Right to Information, anti-domestic violence act etc are the result of public activism & certainly not the political statesmanship. Individuals also manytimes outweigh the system & influential power lobby when they function in a participatory mode. Many call them extra-ordinary personality. Infact they really function normally as a perfect citizen of a democracy where as those called them extra-ordinary in fact function below par as a citizen of democracy.

Its the Leaders(Political)

I think among many other reasons this would be the top most of them, the so called political leaders of our country has done nothing and its just that they get elected to make money and do nothing for people or the country, there is no proper system the way we elect our candidates, there are no good candidates at all who we can be proud of  and tell yes this person will bring change, and many times even parties come out with average candidate, and some also comeout with goonda's and people who are having criminal activities in the past, and people who have no basic education to understand what politics is all about, and these people at the helm will do nothing extraordinare, we will see the same thing again and again, and no improvement at all.

Lack of participatory intent by the citizen

idea posted by Biranchi Narayan Acharya Chief Manager (Projects), Simplex Infrastructures Ltd

A democracy cab be better if its people too have a participatory role. Unfortunately in India people are serious on their rights but ignorant on their duties. Such duality is really holding back India. India can only be progressed ifthe attitude of its public changes. Blaming netas or babus are only excuses.

I am bit disaggreeing that poor class cannot have a participatory role. May be they may not participte in day to day affiare but Constitution provides them the right to elect. This is the most important partcipatory role by a citizen in a democracy. Unfortunately may be due to lack awareness they sell their votes for immidiete gain.

Whenever something wrong happens either in home or office we tend to blame our brothers or colleagues for it. Same is true here also. Who the hell are stopping us to vote out corrupt politicians ? Who ? Ironically, much of the credit for India's development should go to politicians(selected one) only. Entrepreneurs work for their benefit only. When someone starts business he thinks of his profit only. But politicians don't receive anything for the increase in GDP during his tenure. What must be realised is we have failed to reward good performing politicians. Votes are still casted on the basis of caste, religion, region and many more baseless issues. To correct this media has a very important role to play. They must talk freely and bluntly (to make an impact bluntness is very necessary eg. blunt speeches by Thackrey's, Modi etc.) about not only corrupt politicians but also non-performing politicians.

The so called educated mass in our country are more selfish. So, they participate for personal gain or will remain in different to the situation. The rest poor and unemployed people have no scope to participate because their energy spent in arranging two meals every day. Therefore, no body remains to think about the mother land. We still survive because our ancestors sacrificed so much for the nation. It is high time to change the attitude and do some thing good for the country for which the future generation will be proud.

*** Corruption from Top to Grass Root Level ***

idea posted by Manish Gaurav Chairman, B2B Logica Pvt. Ltd.

The main reason behind India's lackness is Corruption which starts from top level to the grass root level...It hinders the vision for progress by selected few...Sooo, much of Indian Currency gets turned into black money everyday...And it cannot be stopped unless we give up our personal interest for the country 'n for this we all have to get united to work against it...If the top level governance wants it can be abolished but again in vain as they themselves or their colleagues are involved in it...corruption overcomes the hopes of youths and the people who wants to work for the betterment of the Country...

It is correption that has seeped in our system and lead to the current  mess in our system and has  hindered  progress. When an Indian can do so well all over the world and excel in practically all fields, the same heights can be achieved in india too but for rampant corruption.

While the lust for power and money has made the beaurocrats and politicians play foul  with the growth and careers of aspiring young professionals the frustration in them is only palpable.

Hats off to private and corporate sector that can emerged out victorious despite the babus and netas.

Lack of alignment of individual goals, -- or -- "what's there in it for me ?"

idea posted by Madhukar Bhat Project Leader, Release Engineering

Any individual will work with passion for a goal that is close to his heart. We are a country of more than a billion people. So, the ideas that work for smaller population usually will not work for us. Here, with the social security being what it is, becomes the prime motive for everyone to work. So everyone from a politician to a Govt. Servant to a private entrepreneur tries to make himself secure with means at their disposal. If you belong to the generation that has had to write entrance exams for an Engineering seat in the IITs or a Medical Seat, you know what the fight is all about.

Thus, prime factor holding us back is ourselves. Carrying India forward should automatically translate to a secure personal status, financially and socially. One might be able to observe the effects of the alignment in the areas of Competitive Professional Sports, Private Enterprise for starters.

Just expanding my thoughts from the previous post...

The lack of security is the root cause of rampant corruption. What begins as a compulsion is then taken over by greed as it gains traction in revenue generation for the individual benefiting from the bribes or kickbacks. The matters become worse when this goes unpunished by the system. This in turn, when visible to peers leads to multiplication of the phenomenon.

No long term plan or vision for the country

idea posted by Prasad PN Zonal Sales Manager

India does not have any long term vision or plan in any field. Most plans and visions are short term and adhoc. Trying to catch up with other countries is not going to help and we need to formulate India specific plans and priorities. We want a precedent for every thing to happen or follow. Unless we chart our own journey with clear plan and agenda we will survive for ages as we are.

Education and infrastructure

idea posted by Mukul Bhartiya Head-Sales & Marketing(Organic Food Business), Arvind Ltd.

Equitable distribution of education is primary reason for India's backwardness. In our country, mere ability to write your name makes you literate person but is this really a benchmark? The common population should be educated enough to understand and execute their personal and professional best. Population explosion is the best example of lack of education. Further, our country's infrastructure is awefully bad. You name it; transport, electricity, medical, power-every sector needs a massive push from the government as well as all Indian people.
