Construction Planning & Management

I am a final year BTECH student of civil engg. department IIT Guwahati currently doing my thesis on the topic "implementation of lean construction in IIT Guwahati".

On the basis of a questionnaire survey I have found that the major construction waste in IIT Guwahati is due to extra processing. On further discussions with the contractors it has been found that labor shortage and their low productivity is a major factor affecting their performance. They are willing to go for mechanization but it should be feasible. I wanted to know if there is a scope for mechanization on a site with a budget of around 10 crores. Ready mix concrete can not be used as it has been found to be expensive and due to less requirement the bar bending is done locally at site.

The site is a 3 storied academic building with around 450 m2 of covered area on each floor.

Suggestions are welcome.

Precast Construction:

Ankit, this is a major problem in 40%-43% of India where you will find labour dominated construction market, but believe me going for the precast construction will save, time, money, manpower and tons of stress. Almost all the parts assembled in Site cast be precast/prefabricated, so using this method of construction will certainly call for less labour requirement and prove successful for completion of structure in time.

Winch lift for men, materials and concrete, bigger concrete mixers (mini batching plant like 500R) connected to lifts by simple conveyors, light weight move able chain & pulley arrangements for lifting shuttering, semi automatic type bar bending machine (e.g. Icaro P36) can be looked into.
