Hi friends......

Many of the early efforts to apply artificial intelligence methods to real problems, including medical reasoning has failed to satisfy people. Strategies have been developed to limit the number of hypotheses that a program must consider and to incorporate pathophysiologic reasoning. The latter innovation permits a program to analyze cases in which one disorder influences the presentation of another.

Despite these advances, medical artificial intelligence still a hard sell - Why?

Limited Knowledge

idea posted by KUMAR SWAMY H C Senior Manager - Mfg. Engg, PEARLITE LINERS PRIVATE LIMITED

We human beings do not posesses supernatural power like the old indian rishis. Today's scholar is one who has got First rank in his professional exam. Yes he is a genius and his work should be praised. But think what he has done / achieved. He has only written perfectly answers to questions asked in the question paper. The question paper is set based on a prescribed set of syllabus for that course. The course material is written by whom?? One more professional who has more experience and slightly more knowledge than this kid.So every thing boils down to a book containing some limited knowledge about all aspects of life. Why is it that we do not have books written with answers to our daily problems??? It is because each person tackles it differently to the best of his knowledge. He says that his decision was the best.

When we are not clear about how daily issues should be addressed such that they do not recur how can we expect the best out of the Artificial intelligence. After all it the extension of our limited knowledge. If A.I. has to be successful in Medical science then first the implementer should have thorough knowledge about the subject.Thorough means he should be in a position to replicate a part / system with exactly the same features as the part when it was in good working condition, only then the A.I. will work and the general public will believe the A.I. Today each practitioner interprits the health problem of a person in his own language. When you sing in chorus with no rhyme and rhythem then it does not become a song it becomes noise. If mankind starts singing melodiously to all ears A.I. will be successful in all fronts especially Medical.

Sir, when even brothers and/or sisters can't "sing the same song", it is very difficult to imagine all of mankind doing that.

Never a replacement

In my humble opinion, just as an everyday layperson, I strongly feel that AI can only be a helper. It can never be a replacement.

Even if the available AI programs are helpers and will remain so, I suspect that the self-reliant nature of most doctors obstructs them from accepting help. There is a point to it - an expert prefers to be in touch with his/her subject and knows that they will lose proficiency if they are lazy.

I see no reason for AI to be there in the medical field other than for sample analysis, etc. Ok, maybe for very basic triage purposes in ER .

Hurt by hype

One major problem was unrealistic expectations, for example, is complicated because the two sources may not share terminology and language. Usability was an issue, too early programs that helped physicians make diagnoses were inconveniently located outside patient rooms.

Prop 8 Trial Closing Argument Transcripts

I am more than ever convinced that trials on constitutional issues need to be televised (or at least made available on the web) so that citizens can see how the legal arguments are made. The misunderstanding of the difference between a legal argument, an emotional argument and a religious argument has led to so much civil (or rather incivil) disruption and hard feelings. But most people don't understand enough of the U.S. Constitution to get that "majority rule" is not the principle of our representative democracy. The constitution is designed to protect us from majority rule. And that works as much for conservatives as it does for liberals, as if those terms have any real meaning any more. It certainly works better for religion if it is kept separate from the state. I had the privilege recently of hearing a history professor lecture about the colonial period, the foundation of the United States, the First Great Awakening, and the ideal of separation of church and state. It was eye-opening to realize how determined to make this a secular nation Isaac Backus, a founder of the American Baptists, was.

Salient, not Silent

idea posted by Shreos Roychowdhury CTO of a new initiative, Reliance ADAG

We apply AI concepts in several forms of day to day business, ranging from classical pathfinders to agent-based systems. Personally, I feel, all these somewhat hide the fact that it uses AI, so people tend to treat it as just another system, and hence their popularity. We do-not even wince at the fact that a routing engine that recommends a time-optimized route avoiding traffic jams  OR a torrent system for large file sharing OR a network fault-management system is actually a AI application.

In medical recommendation systems, however, the AI-ness is too pronounced, maybe due to vendor advertising. Going by basic nature, almost nothing is new to such a system. The event-correlation logic is very similar to alarm-correlation systems, the knowledge discovery principals are used in data-mining systems elsewhere, ... etc. , etc.

Yet, maybe just because it says it uses AI, it is summarily rejected in favour of a Google search to find the same information which by the way, silently uses AI in several ways again.
