Mindset: Good Worker Vs. Good Manager

Worker

Manager

1) Looks for clearly defined Work Definitions

1) Looks to identify gaps been current state of affairs/product/satisfaction & desired state of affairs /product/satisfaction.

2) Looks for “best” wages & benefits to perform the role.

2) Looks to identify ‘all’ resources that may be available or could be made use off, for reaching the desired state of satisfaction including those that may be picked up during implementation/process & those that may become available upon reaching the desired state of satisfaction. Frequently raises the 'bar' or desired satsfaction levels.

3) Seeks ‘incentives’ for quick/faster delivery.

4) Is scared for the fear of Job loss (sometimes) when unsure that his skills shall not be required upon completion of the job.

3) Loves the experience of devising new solutions without fear of Job loss.

5) Is looking to pick up new skills that he feels shall make him more marketable & help to qualify for better wages.

4) Enjoys the experience of development & delivery of solutions and picks up necessary skills mid-way. Also, on look out to draft dexterous employees with different skills & remains connected with them.

6) Often tries to keep critical information/ knowledge to chest or in silos for selective access to maintain an air of superiority among team mates. Sometimes, looks to defeat team mates to maintain self image.

5) Shares information with colleagues to help hone their skills & is on lookout to reward performance/dexterity of team mates. Nurture positive set of values and rewards people for performance.

7) Loves complications (sometimes to the extent of complicating tasks by self) to ensure that people around appreciate & reward team & self for the vitality and difficulty level of the task being performed.

6) Simplifies things/tasks/processes for team mates & others and clearly communicates value/benefits to stakeholders to seek rewards for team & self.

Good and Bad are situation dependent! A Worker can become a Manager and a Manager working in a small SME, if loses his position, can become a worker in a large corporation! You cannot have set standards for every worker or every manager. The one who stands erect in tough situation is a good manager or worker, and this position can turn around in other situation!

“Worker” and “Manager” are two different types of jobs which require different skill-sets to succeed. It is usually assumed that experienced worker will turn into a good manager also, but it may not be true. Workers, who are able to develop the skills required to be a manager can become “good” managers, else they don’t.
