The poor are not creditworthy

idea posted by Ekta Dutta Hedge Fund Analyst/Trader, ING Vysya Bank

I believe that this is an important misconception in providing financial service to the poor. The micro credit experience of the last three decades decisively challenges this perception, showing that if suitable mechanisms are used, the poor can be as creditworthy as the rich. The poor’s lack of collateral can be overcome with joint liability within a group of borrowers, and this has resulted in very high repayment rates in micro credit over the last three decades.

In general once a person fall below the poverty line, he remain poor for generation. Threre may be very few exceptions to this aspect.

Further the above  misconceptions help in proving the above reality to which NO govt is ready to aacept  and most govts are doing lip service to remove poverty, specially in democratic set up.

I think this misconception arises because of lack of experience of many banks in the micro-finance market. As the experience increases, it will be realised that the rate of default is low when self-help groups are involved and when proper safeguards and checks are in place.

No Adress per se

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Around 600 mn Indians live under rampan povcerty according to latest report revised coming out which meand they don't even have a permanent address to open a Bank Account with or get statments to.

So financial service reforms for the poor should take into account this predicament which I believe one cannot surmount easily. Evne to post a Social Security check one need a permanent address which is also not there. I odn't know this is a precarious situation.

There should be a supervisory system in place in India in walks of life. Offices should have glass enclosures where the supervisor can look at the jobs taking place. If there is a mishandling or sloth work taking place the worker has to be given sticks. Supervisors in the whole hierarchy make sure that zero error behavior and work take place everywhere. If a person comes to office and loitters in the lobby or go to fulfull personal chores it need be given sticks. Unnecessary loittering in city commercial areas by those who don't have any reason should be booked or frightened out a little by the Police. In all walks of life there should be supervision where deviation from should be corrected with sticks.

To elaborate the points I made yesterday, I will have to affirm that there is no misconceptions about the aid to the poor. To emphasize what we face is an "AGGRERIAN"  problem meaning we don't have a collective agenda Politicaly or Economicaly, socialy and so to say culturaly for the masses to accept as a standard scale on which their Self Interest can be worked out. Self Interest is emphasized as not selfishness rather opportunities and systems in place to meet ones own legitimate goals in life.

This might sound esoteric to many I feel but let me emphasize there are legitimate methods available which has to be forced on citizen so that they will behave and work up their self interest so that their self interest alligns knowingly or unknowingly to the collective goal of the Nation.

Of coursd governemnt act as an agent and a facilitator for the Nation in providing the infrastructure and facilities for citizen to work up their self interest. Those who have extreme specialization or differentiation of Labor might do better than others which depends on ones own committment to ones own goals.

The execution states are little unsavory for many I feel. The police and the supervisor states built up in the system of the Nation should deliver work efficiently, which include not just law enforcement reactively but proactively they can control the masses.

For example everyone must get the opportunity to touch the base and everyone must belong to some Organization like students to Scohools and those who seek jobs some companies or government. They should have supervisors above them affirming normal behavior from and behavior must be productive. Here the Police can do their small bit like they can roam around the streets and if they see people who has not job to be around in places simply loitering those areas. They can control them to fear what they are doing which is bumping the system with sloth and inefficiency. They can even book them for some reason or the other so that they can start fearing and start doing something productively.

Productive work must be encoraged with Carrots and nonproductive activities taking place in the system with sticks.

Alligning ones selfinterest with the Nations goals should be pursured as a defacto necessity for building efficiency. Government cannot be sloth eather. They have to provide jobs for those who seek, make environment investment friendly and provide efficient infrastructure with vision that lead to efficient outcomes rather than waste and foul outcomes. They should not follow foul and nuerotic activities like encouraging conflicts expecially with neighbors.

I can go on forever but let me stop, control is the problem and one has to take charge and make life meaningful and create meaningful outcomes on scientific and standard scales.

Let's extend our thinking

idea posted by LAKKANIKI SESHAGIRI HEADING INSURANCE BROKING IN A STATE OF INDIA, A LEADING INSURANCE INTERMEDIARY

Let us remember, in any society at any time, the poor form majority. Any product or service totally out of the scope of this majority section is inhuman. The litmus test for any organization is its SOCIAL RELEVANCE and insurance companies are no exception.

But very unfortunately, once the sector in our country is opened for new players the PSU Insurers also have changed their track and in the number game they are also deeply sunk. It gives an impression that the regulating authority has also  become just a spectator ignoring the poor.

It is sad yet true.

poors are not creditworthy

it is a myth. poors are more credit worthy than other retail and corporate borrowers. the reason for advancing the wrong notion is that lenders today refuse to understand the problem of the poor. what the poor need is proper guidance in managing their financial affairs. timely financial assisstance and affordable rate of interest. help of a person respected in the locality, during the interaction with prospective borrower will certainly crear a trust between the lender and the borrower. it the trust which eventually enhance the prospect of recovery.

Proper use of the money

idea posted by Esha Johar Risk Analyst, Irevna

This is another misconception of Financial help to the poor. The loan giver thinks that poors are ignorant of the market thus cannot spend their money in right places. Even if they have a little idea also, still there is a possibility of their getting cheated. Thus there is no secuirity of money in their hands...

Business needs are not fulflled by poors

idea posted by Shailesh Vadalkar Business Analyst, Al Rostamani Pegel LLC

Te financial services are always looked as a business. In any business porfit or returns are expected. The fellacy is if you provide financial services to poors they may not provide returns whichis wrong.

This actually works on volumes if large number of poors are supporting the bsiness of financial services then it is definately a workable anf profitable proposition.
