With continuous stride in telecommunication market, India has become 3rd largest telecom market in the world. Having said that, it has also opened a market for mobile marketing which is right now very minisicule. But with 3G technology in picture, voice call tariff charges going down to the level of 0.50 paisa per second and SMS charges to 5 paisa, things are going to be completely altogather in coming 4-5 years down the line. It will give a completely new shape to the marketing communication.

Fairytale story of Indian telecom industry continues, which started nearly 15-16 years back with overall tele-density reaching 44.85% in October, 2009. According to recent figures released by TRAI, wireless subscriber base in India has increased by another 16.67 Million in October, 2009 taking total number of subscribers to 488 million. As on October 2009, India now has a total telecom subscriber base of 526.65 million as compared to the 509.03 million in September,09 making it 3rd largest telecommunication network in the world.

Similarly, Broadband penetration in India has now reached to 5.5 million subscriber mark and target is to achieve 20 million mark by year 2010.

3G subscription in India is also going to touch the figure of 90 million users by 2013, according to research firm Gartner.

With the present tariff war in mobile call rate(0.5 paisa per second by MTNL) and SMS call rate(5 Paisa by Reliance), future of advertisement is going to take a complete turnaround and various traditional media channels will be re-inventing itself to stay sustainable. What I am seeing from here that mobile penetration in India is going to bring whole new dimension in mobile marketing, mobile commerce and mobile banking.

Absolutely and a great analysis by you. Above 50% of Indian population is connected to the mobile. After the newspaper, TV and radio, mobile is the next medium of connectivity. As put forth by you, the next step will be using this mobile network for transactions other than talking on phone. This will be the next big logical thing to happen. In fact, I would like to add, like newspapers depend on ads for revenue, mobile phone networks will also go in that direction. With superior phone features coming in to the handset, it will not be a surprise if after 5 years, 25% of Indian population start using the handset for listening to radio, sending IM (instant messaging) & e-mail, internet browsing, watching movies and tele serials, booking train-bus-movie tickets, face-to-face video conferencing etc.  The mobile handset will also compete with the laptop for computing needs. So a new SUBAH is on, in the never ending telecom revolution!
