I will go for MS project tool because it is very commonly used & effective tool for project management as it is designed to assist project managers in developing plans, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing budgets and analyzing workloads while handling project.

Yes. MS-Project is the mostly used tool. It has all relavant features and very user friendly.

I vote for MS Projects and use it because

  • I can geerate more Base lines in MSP compared to PRIMAVERA
  • Import of data from customized Excel templates to MSP is possiblke ands also this process has versatile use in manipulation of data. This is not possible in PRIMAVERA.
  • Generation of S' curves is easier by exporting to Excewl again.

MS Projects with Server

I have used various tools and find MS Project is better then all other available tools. I am not telling its a complete solution, there are some areas needs some improvement just like on-going activities, RBS etc

Customized Spread Sheet Templates (Say MS Excel...!!!)

idea posted by M NITIN SHENOY, PMP, IPMA-D, CEng MICE Asst. Constr. Manager, L&T

U may be quite surprised wiht my view of Considering MS Excel or any Spreadsheet for that matter as a PM Tool...!!!

Definitely PM is all about gathering and documenting timely data/ information (Cost, Time, % Progress) for analysis and decision making.

Inorder to capture, represent and analyse the data/ information, you definitely need a Customized Template, whose formats are developed and adapted based on your experience, project and client requirements.

When I am talking of DATA it can be anything varying from cost, time , % progress, staff manhours, productivity, etc...

MS Project for that matter may help you out in Developieng a Time Based Plan resulting in a Project Duration.

But all these tools have their own limitations and can't adapt to all practical requirements like

  1. Scope change and its related effects
  2. Chande in Market trends
  3. Productivity Improvements
  4. Safety parameters
  5. Quality inputs... etc..

All the above paramters are definitely part of any PM domain...

Hence Customized Spreadsheet Templates are always the best PM Tools when looked upon on addressing Larger scale of issues involved in a Project...

We must be cautious at every instant while we have to be original while using Excel. We can only be comfortable in case of Excel by extensive use of the macros to develop a gantt chart and other reports.Since the MSP has most of the features inbuilt for theis purpose I wish that a typical mix of MSP and Excel will provide good solution for project management.

Home grown templates on standard PM software

idea posted by V. Balamurugan Head (Project Management)
It is essential to customize any project management software in the form of templates for different functions with in the organizations. These template based project plan will be easy to understand within the functional division and can really meet the commitments in the end. Such templates should have the easy interface to formulate the total project plan. This concept only will succeed in the end run and make the management of project through software a thumping success.
