Dear friends, currently, the biotechnology is used primarily to modify crops, although a number of other applications are in the wings. Can you suggest what are the moving trends in the use biotechnology in the field of agriculture. Please en light.. :)

Definite Health risks from genetically modified crops

idea posted by Charles davison Project Manager, Douglas OHI LLC

Health risks have been a primary concern with GM crops.Innumerable concerns arebeing raised about the adverse effects genetically modified crops have on the health of people and animals alike. There is a growing body of evidence regarding these health risks, none of which have been disproved.

there has been sporadic studies conducted by scientists and findings are rather disturbing.

1. Impact on Internal organs and immune system.

2. Allergic reactions

3. Reproductive disorders

4. Threats to Infants and invalids....to name a few

Please go to www.greenpeace.org/india/assets/graphics/safe-food-guide.pdf

and also down load and read guide for safe food at www.safefoodnow.org

Readers to please give their opinions on GM crops and processed foods after reading the article

Yoy will be able to shed more light in this matter Bindu ,since I see that you are associated in that field.

I agree with you Mr. Charles, The points you have given are very often found. There is a big health risks from genetically modified crops....

Multidirectional uses

idea posted by BEENA AGARWAL Head/VP/GM-Corporate Planning/Strategy, ANADI HI TECH AGRO PVT LTD

Transgenic technology can be utilized to develop plants with various beneficial traits such as

a) Crop protection traits which include resistance to pests, diseases and herbicides; b) Abiotic stress in the form of tolerance to drought, heat, cold or salinity, thus enabling plants to be grown in inhospitable habitats, adding more land for cultivation; and c) Quality traits leading to enhanced nutrition; prolonged shelf-life or improved taste, colour or fragrance of fruits, vegetables and flowers; and increased crop yield.

In INDIA also its application is raising gradually,viz;

Insect resistant brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, chickpea, cotton maize, pigeon pea potato and many other crops,

Disease resistant Brinjal,Rice,Potato,Chickpea etc,

Herbicide Tolarent Blackgram,Cotton Mustard and rice

Stress tolerant Mustard and rice

Edible vaccine muskmelon ,tomato etc,

Nutrition enhancing mustard ,potato, and rice etc.

The burgeoning global population and declining arable land necessitate sustainable food production systems and environmental conservation, especially in the developing countries. So the challenge for the next 50 years will be to improve food security and to feed a projected additional three billion people. What we need is a new ‘Gene Revolution’ environmentally sustainable as well as yield-increasing. It should aim to reap benefits from genetic revolution based on cutting-edge works associated with genetic mapping, molecular markers, biotechnology, transformation techniques, plant tissue culture. Biotechnology is the tool that will allow us to produce more food on less land, with reduced depletion and damage to water resources and biodiversity. This technology is not a substitute for conventional plant breeding methods. Rather, it is a supplementary tool for producing tailor-made genetically modified or transgenic crops.

This technology is used to develop transgenic crops for biotic and abiotic stress. Input (agronomic) and output (quality) traits in agriculture can also be improved by this technology. Other fields in which transgenic crops can be used are phytoremediation, nutritionally-rich crops, edible vaccines, biofuels, molecularpharming etc.

Wow!! amazing advances simple farming is getting into!! Food insight. Its really knowledge and learning for me!! :))

trangenics

idea posted by pooja agarwal B.Sc student, KTHM college

transgenics in crops is the most popularised trend in agriculture now a days . as the conditions of improving crop varities are geettin worsened by the uncertain rains n prices soring so high biotechnology can help to a greater extent

Yes, transgenic crops can developed for abiotic and biotic stress. For example, Bt brinja and Bt cotton are  developed to reduce the consumption of harmful chemical pesticides and therefore, are one of the major components of IPM.

Biosafty issues related to transgenics should be strictly followed before coming to the market.

Drought resistant biotech plants!

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

New developments allow farmers to address the challenges of producing food in less than adequate growing conditions with drought and flood-resistant crops, enabling agricultural production to withstand adverse growing conditions. Researchers recently tested cutting-edge biotech plants by subjecting them to drought conditions of 70% less water than normal. They survived with almost no loss in yield.
