In a recent report published it says, none of the Indian universities figure among the top 100 varsities of the world, with America and UK dominating the scene.

America's Harvard University has retained its top position in 2009 while UK's Cambridge University has moved up from third to second position. Yale University of US has slipped one position to third.  According to the QS/Times Higher Education rankings, the University College London (UCL) leapfrogged Oxford University as the latter slipped from fourth to joint fifth position along with Imperial College, London.

The number of Asian universities in the list of top 100 has increased from 14 to 16. The University of Tokyo, at 22, is the highest ranked Asian university, ahead of the University of Hong Kong that stands at 24.  The rankings are based on an international survey of 9,000 academics who assessed the institutions' research facility, teaching quality and ability to recruit staff and students abroad.

Why there are no Indian Universities in that list? What could be the reasons? Share your views people.

Because of the Quotas

idea posted by Sarika Singh Assistant Professor, BIT

I think this is the major disadvantage, why Indian universities are not in that league, with so much quotas merit studetns are not getting chance, and this is making them to go for other foreign universities, and do all the required research in their interested field and develop all things for other countries and India in that regard is not benefitting, as the best minds are travelling else where with lack of opportunities, and this quota and reservation should be removed, and there should be PPP model, which will bring in more investment and helps in improving research facilities in the universities, with only government undertaking all the cost burden it is highly impossible to allocate funds to all. I thought atleast one of our IITs or the IIMs would be in that list but not so, may be because we are not up to the standard with the assesment made by the international jury.

The reason being Indian universities are lacking international standards. Students from Indian Universities are hardly performing in international level or becoming any great Entrepreneurs. This is the reason our universities are not in Internationally top rated list.
The reason for this type of low standard performance is the Government quotas on educational institutes and lot of corruption in them which is keeping away Good quality students from them.

Quality of Teaching, Teaching Methods and Infrastructure

idea posted by Ramakrishna Perumal Electrical Specialist Engineer,

There is lot of difference in quality of teaching in Foriegn universities compared to Indian unversities and also the methods adopted in teaching is entirely different in foriegn Universities compared to Indian Universities. I feel the these two aspects have to be improved a lot by indian universities so that they can catchup with other univsristies. Methods means the universities should have to latest Laboratries, equipments, good infrastructure so that more and more students are attracted and also the students coming out of universities will be with high calibre and intelligent. Universties should continuoulsy upgrade the techologies so that they are in par with other universities. For continuously upgrading the infrastruture and technology lot of finance will be required and I think the Governement have to fund partly and remaining part has to be funded by private participation.

There is nothing to do with reservation or quota system because the quality of university will only depend on the quality of teaching, teaching methods and infrastructure. All students wether bright or dull will definetly perform well if the quality of teacing is good and intersting. If the teaching method is not intersting, then even the bright students may not perform well.

The other point i want to elaborate is even though the Indian universties are not in top 100 but the students working aboard after completing their studies in India will be more than the other countries. So this shows the quality of students coming out of Indian universities is very good otherwise the other countries will not prefer Indian students.

I think that it is due to the quality of teaching and teaching methods...As our govt does nt provide the books...Teachers who are paid well are also nt taking care of teaching students properly specially in govt schools...Sometimes even studies are affected by infrastructure that is a school should hv proper drinking facility, good and clean classrooms & even a school should hv a proper playground where students should be taught different games & sports..

Does it really matters????

idea posted by Balram Sub Editor/Reporter

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi did not win a Nobel (and by the way, what actually is a Nobel????) ---- Does that makes the MAHATMA smaller????

Slumdog Millionaire, a copy of Deewar got an Oscar (and by the way, what actually is an Oscar????) ---- Does that makes the script of Deewar smaller????

and just for the sack of discussion, every country has its own realities. Around 70% of India's population lives in it's villages, where the caste system is still relevent.

So, anyone who is opposing reservation (mostly in metros) is far away from the UGLY TRUTH of BHARAT....

However, India is a Democratic country and everyone has a right to express their views.

Though, I am not a expert on the subject, just wanted to share something....

During the debate on Reservations at the time of making of the Constitution, one of the Parliamentarian H.J.Khandekar in favour of the same said ----

"You are responsible for our being unfit today. We were supressed for thousands of years. You engaged in your service to serve your own ends and supressed us to such an extent that neither our minds nor our bodies and nor even our hearts work, nor our we able to march forward. This is the position. You have reduced us to such a position and then you say that we are not fit and that we have not secured the requisite marks. How can we secure them?"    ---- India after Gandhi, Ramachandra Guha, Page 114

The reservation was for 50 years it was the dream of the founding fathers that the when the downtrodden be develop but 62 years down the line nothing much has changed the reason greed people who benefited greatly who life style is some thing only their fore father could ever dream of still continue to enjoy the benefits     of quota and reservation for which other wise would have gone to a worthy person who has every right to enjoy the benefits given by the government(for example : " know of a guy who's parent were government doctors with healthy privet practice and financially very well off . but their studied in a government collage pay a paltry amount as fees , he would some time brag out it say our drivers one month pay and my fee for a year ire the same . ) .this greed of the creamy layer  is effectively elbowing out merit no wonder we are not in the ON THE TOP 100

With none of the Indian Universities in top 100. still the pass outs of these hold major chunk of high profile portfolios in world, be it scientists, doctors, engineers or the CEOs.Its OK to follow good practices from around the world but just because a survey doesn't put them in top 100 doesn't make them worthless. With all the difficulties like lack of infrastructure and ,too much of government indulgence still these universities are trying to come up with best possible talent and they should be appreciated and encouraged for that.

Poor Infrastructure of Campus

idea posted by prakashraj kumavat MBA/PGDM student, Omegan School of Business (ICFAI Tripura)

Why there is no Indian University among world's top 100? I think Poor Infrastructure may be one of the reason. As IIM has good infrastructure facilities even it is eliminated among them. It may be one of the reason.

Accountability of the faculty

idea posted by SHARATH CHANDAR REDDY Business Development Manager - Insurance, I T C Ltd

While I agree to the idea of Sarika, I would like to add another important facet of the Indian academia. The accountability of the faculty, be it for intellectual contribution or be it in doing committed and contemporary research is lacking. The passion for academics and the dynamism to lead the students too is lacking. Many a times, faculty themselves are not updating their knowledge.

I am sure there are some excellent faculty members....pls ignore the above remarks....

OPEN CORRUPTION

idea posted by Charles davison Project Manager, Douglas OHI LLC

There is so much corruption in the Universities which is blatant which coupled with QUOTA system as sarika has appropriately mentioned is letting down the Image of Universities in India.

It is very true since Abroad most of the firms also triple check on the Indian Universities and degrees of applicants be admitting them to study /work.

We have to have a through revamp to get the right place we deserve

Education System,Courseware and Methodolgy

idea posted by Japan Shah H.O.D, Oxford School of Management

The Indian education system is the most traditional system. If you go o any of the universities in India the courses that are run are the traditional courses and very less innovation is done..

The private universities which are teaching with new techniques and methodology is not allowed to grow because of the system.. We have a typical system of studying the subjects which are given by the university and not selected by the students which they like.. For an instance the recent Nobel Price winner De. Venkat is a Ph D in Physics and got nobel in Chemistry, can it be possible in India? NO....

We still follow the traditional methodology of teaching. Very few in India have implemented the Case Study, Role Play, Skits, Management games way of teaching, wherein in Harward and the best Universities these are used to a large extend...

We need to change and change a lot, we must also accept this, the government must accept this and both must work together with a mission to bring 2-3 Indian universities in top 100 list...
