In a bid to bring in transparency and encourage public participation in intelligence gathering, the criminal investigation department (CID) of the karnataka state police has logged into social networking sites Twitter and Facebook. Where people can join helpcidkarnataka group on Facebook. The username in Facebook and Twitter is DGPCIDKARNATAKA.

Claiming that the state CID was the first to log on to the social networking sites, its director-general of police DV Guruprasad said the decision followed interactions with IT and ITeS industry captains.  And also with interactions with people on social networking sites, they are increasing their online presence, even recently we all saw Indian post office join twitter for that matter, and now its CID's turn. I would like to ask a question here like how this association of CID with Social networking site will help them?  Share your views on this.

Getting maximum Inputs on crime

idea posted by Disha Roy Lecturer, St Xaviers College

No where working in isolation will help for that matter, and a premier investigating agencies like CID will be getting maximum inputs on crimes and criminals without any fear.  As there was this huge gap of communication channel missing with officials like Police or CID for that matter of fact, now one can air their views and also give more inputs on crimes and criminals on these platforms...this helps a lot to clean the society in future..

Hi Disha, thanks for this wonderful topic for discussion. Firstly CID as we all know is a state body requiring secrecy, that is how it has worked all these years. General people had no way to contact them on themselves and even if there is/was such a system few are aware of it. Moreover nobody knows how the CID works, can we trust them or are they as corrupt as their cousins(state police). Lack of interaction did one good i.e. it preserved our respect and faith for CID. Keeping this in mind its decision to join social networking sites is a huge step, now anybody with a internet connection can directly contact them. Prima-facia this will be helpful for us to contact them, their reach will increase and will only be good for both the department and public. However they should be aware of the evils hiding, i.e. criminals can also keep track of them along with the public and make no mistake they will do it more effectively than you or i. Moreover people working for CID and their family tends to be at risk as they works with criminals directly, joining FB and twitter may increase their vulnerability. So u see after all it can also backfire if not managed properly.

However CID is a bunch of intelligent people and knows how to protect themselves and the society so they must have figured out ways to use social networking sites safely.

Yes, I agree with you.

It may be useful for getting more updates on crime.

By joining social networking sites, the CID is trying to bring transparency and enhance its image among the public. The future belongs to social media marketing and almost all the agencies are jumping onto the bandwagon.

Social media networking sites when used with caution leads to additional channels of communication for disseminating information to the public....

Use Business Analytics Tool

idea posted by Harsh Vardhan Freelancer, ITES / BPO / Customer Service
An initiative however well meaning, would amount to nothing if application is lacking. Bangalore being the IT hub, experts from the fields of Business Analytics and Psycho-Analysis (NIMHANS) could be roped in. They should from a core advisory group to CID. This would help the initiative to understand Social Networking better and applying business modeling tools would actually lead to a better perspective of social networking. A Post Mortem is not what we desire; prevention is what we are looking at - a la “Tom Cruise – Minority Report”. Let’s use technology to make a difference, without making it a police state.

Its a good sign where CID and also other government organizations are falling in line where they are joining social networking sites which would help the law enforcement agencies, as it would open up a new channel of communication with the public. The initiative would make the working of the CID more transparent. While giving alerts on social networking is sure to benefit people, their reaction will help CID and other organizations better themselves.

Thanks for the referral Ms Disha

I agree with Ms Sonam, new channels of communication will be opened up. The common man will understand the working of law enforcement agencies more better and can give in their in puts, which can help in making these agencies more better.

New frontier for crime detection

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

Sometime back also, I mentioned, intelligence networking is more important to maintain the Law & Order. The stronger & richer the information more culprit can be booked. The social network can enrich this cause for CID's. On particular issues, sought after information can be gained, provided that the networking people are really efficient, knowledgiable & accessible to the facility. Social networking has, not really, caught up the masses except in few metro's & among IT's. May be it is doing well in US & UK in variuos channels including Spying, business, friendship etc.In India, at this stage, I beleive that it is opening up a new vista's to the masses in this direction & need to grow up sufficiently. We can not expect wonders, immediately, from this but, need to wait & see.But this begining is appreciated & welcome.

BETTER PUBLIC RELATIONS

This is a very good move by the CBI by joining the Twitter & The Facebook.

This will surely result in the better Public relations with the Indians.

People can directly ask questions & expect answers, shares some information, support the Team, etc.

This is a revolutionary change.

Wait for its results.

idea posted by ASHUTOSH SRIVASTAVA Senior resident, SGPGI

If Govt. sector have easy & effective access to the investigating agencies then surely agencies must have not come to join social sites to understand the problems and people of india. there must be change in the attitude towards the common man in Govt. sector.

Shifting the goal post

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The job of an investigating agency is to get at the truth. The pathway for these agencies is not so simple and easy. The pattern and motives of crimes vary dramatically.Joining twitter or facebook may not be of much help.On the contrary,it may shift their goal post.
