Three out of every five students that graduate from the country’s engineering institutes need to go through further training to be eligible for any job in the IT/ITeS sector, says a study by a local talent assessment firm.

It said just one in every 20 engineering graduates are fit for a job in an IT product company, while only one in five was fit to work with an IT services provider.

So, why is it so????

Poor Education

idea posted by Suresh P BE student, VELLORE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

I believe that the syllabus we are taught are not updated regularly as per the industry requirement & no proper faculty is there to guide students in the proper way so that they neter smoothly in the job market

There is no synergy between academics and industry. There is, infact, only a discontinuity.

1. How many faculty are there as visiting faculty from industry in engineering colleges? How many colleges are prepared to employ trained, experienced industry professionals in that capacity?

2. How many academic institutions assist industry by performing funded research? How many organizations are interested in funding such research? How many colleges have actually encouraged aggressively such interaction?

without this much fundamental synergy, basic synergy, how can we expect compatibility? It is only a sense of ownership in each other born out of interaction that will produce synergy to complement each others needs.

The students are trained to show their memory and presentation skills instead of understandability. It is not only the university or the institution to be blamed, but also the student. The students are not dare to adopt themselves to the needs of the industry and also they hardly show their interests to learn new things and obviously their creativity is not always encouraged.

Contradicting with this survey

idea posted by Kaushik Ghosh Senior IT Officer, Minstry of Defence, Govt. of India

I'd like to contradict with this survey. IT/Software products need coding/ testing which can also be done by a Science Graduate with good analytical skills (maybe it is not that popular in India based MNCs but in other parts of the world only a BS degree is sufficient for this purpose), only some critical parts of SDLC related to coding/ testing (algo optimization, target code generation etc.) need experienced expertise. So it is rather a convention in India which makes this statement (Only 1 in every 20 engg grads suitable for IT product job) statistically true.

Govt. giving license to anybody to open engineering college

idea posted by Nikhil Jain Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

Suresh I agree with you..the quality of education is poor. Besides that the govt. gives license to whomsoever who wants to make money by opening engineering college. Thus the quality osf education drastically goes down & students are not able to perform as per requirements in the job market & get rejected.

staffs used ti teach what they know and refuse to teach what the student need

idea posted by Sundaramoorthy.k M.A student, v.o.chidambaram college

Nowadays most of the tachers are working just to earn money and not to develop the skills of the students. they also used to concentrate on well studying students to make them score more marks and not on poor students. some teachers just teaches what they know and not what the student need. A perfect teacher should teach in the way which reaches all category of students, whether he is a good or poor student. There should not be any partiality.

High Competency from Other Domain Areas

idea posted by Gururaj Nigale Manager, Strategic Outsourcing Pvt. Ltd

For any company only engineers are not the requirement. There are others areas of concern to improve product and Innovative solutions for the future growth. On this basis from every field with high competent graduates are selected.

Faculties are responsible for this somewhere

idea posted by Chandrakant Prasad Founder & CEO, MyWBUT.com

An engineering student when enters into the college, he has no idea about Corporate World. It is the responsibility of faculties to tech them either syllabus specific or with some knowlegde of outer world.

But it has been seen that todays faculties are almost failed in both the departments.

But in West Bengal, the situation has changed as startups like www.mywbut.com are up and running which helps engineering students completing their degree and students can now freely develope their skill for Corporate life without thinking much about Semester exams.

Education is a business , not learning

idea posted by Shyam S Project Leader/Managing Consultant, A leading EDA firm

Education is now a big time business. Anybody who can afford to pay some bucks will become a computer engineer from some private engineering college, whether it suits them or not.

Until two decades ago, one had to qualify difficult entrance examinations and then choose an engineering branch as per their choice / availability.

Nowadays, every student can choose the subject of their choice if they have the money. The result is before your eyes : we are turning out more Computer Science graduates than ever before but those graduates need to learn the A-B-C of computers after passing out!

Lack of Practical Approch

idea posted by Gurpreet Singh Team Associate, BA Continuum Solutions
I think with increasing number of technical institutes and universities, technical courses have became just a money game in most of the institutes the studies procedures are more theoretical than practical so in the end the pass out graduate can only do bookish works and programs and can not use his mind to do something new
