How many times have we seen negative outburst's regarding our boss all the time, infact boss will the major talk point during the break periods that one gets during work, each and every employee will be whining some or the other thing about their bosses behavior. But lets get straight here...bosses are not always there to be liked. But is there any fun being a boss who is not respected or ineffective at managing staff? Of course not, so let's have a look at what it takes to be a good boss??

Most GOOD bosses know instinctively that their power depends more on employee's compliance than on threats or sanctions.

Fortunately, I worked under such bosses. I have been maintaining excellent relationship with them all along.

In my point of view A boss is one who appreciate you after completion of work on time and give the credit to whom the job is done. Not to be took the credit by himself. Today is very shortage of this type of bosses

4Es: extract, enrich, empower, energise

Any boss, as Mr. Srinivas stated, is a subordinate to another, I would rather replace the word subordinate with 'responsible'. So the first and foremost task of a manager is to extract work from the subordinates (because it is what he is paid for). To extract work from one's subordinates, the boss needs to make them ready to do the task (making him satisfied with his basic needs as per Maslow's heirarchy). Boss needs to take care of his compensation, perks, benefits, leave, family etc. Further when he is ready for taking up his job, the boss need to equip him with the necessary resources to do the job or make those resources available (Empower). Ultimately, he needs to Motivate his employees with the target in mind and communicate to the employees regarding the greatness of their job and appreciating their good practices in public etc.

These are very necessary for an employee.

BOSS SHOULD BE A ROLE MODEL

idea posted by NATTERAJA R. ARIKRISHNAN GM-Projects, Bentec Electricals & Electronics Pvt. Ltd

In any organization the success depends upon the way that is followed by the bosses who should be a role model to lead the team to achieve the objectives/goals of the companies. Hence bosses should be a team builder, motivator, inspirational to his team members, unbiased, making the team members to feel the responsibilities & accountability and not just assigning the tasks, empowering the colleagues and team members to take decisions on certain matters, and sharing the experiences & insights with the staff members to learn more to do the job effectively. These all will help to attain professional growth for the organizations.

Sometimes the team members/employees want to be challenged to do their best and if they like their assignment they will strive to give that. So a good leader always keep in mind that and like an ideal role model he should know when to encourage and when to strike the success from the team members in order to bring out the best from the groups.

Above all a leader should be a listener to his members views and their problems without criticizing and the boss should take the decisions in accordance with the merits of the cases which will make the team members/employees to feel the importance/respect that they are getting from their bosses. This will build high morale among the team members to boost the productivity of the organizations.

Thanks for the referral Ms.Dipika Das.

The boss should not indulge in showing favoritism. Human being always like somebody better than others. It is natural. But this favoritism should not have any place in the office and being a boss he should find common ground with every employee.

Praise the staff in public, correct them in private

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

Good bosses know it very well that praising and encouraging the staff is the key to have a positive atmosphere within the office and it helps to bring the best in them. If someone does something well, a good boss should recognize them for their efforts. People need to know when they are doing well and that they are appreciated. However, if someone is not doing so well, speak to them privately, instead of calling them out in front of a group.  But today..its the other way around like humiliating in public and praising in private.

Encourage your staffs, give motivations, but the same time be strict. First the boss should rectify him/her self. If he /she is perfect then normally staff will be.

BOSS SHOULD BE A ROLE MODEL

idea posted by Sudipta Ghosh Area Executive
In my point of view a "Good Boss" should be a role model for his/her sub ordinate. He/she has to achieve his/her target by motivating (positively..not in a negetaive way)the team. If the Boss is always ready to give his/her best, if he/she try to slove the problem facing by the team then automatically the performance of the team will be improved. a Good Boos ahows the way how the target can be achieved....if the pathway is clear to the team then half of the job is done.

idea posted by R.Hariharan Subramaniam Account Director, (Strategy and Planing), LIVEPOT QATAR, AL Wakhra
It definetly reflects on the bosses background, how he deals with critical situations, Under what circumstances the performance is seen, should be a good team leader, motivator, mentor for everybody to feel secured working under a person like this. Most important thing is that boss should not be a back stabber. One should build a good reputation on the subordinates to follow. Best example I can think of was somebody like Steve Waugh or for that matter Hansie Cronje, last but not the least not to forget somebody like clive lloyd who was considered to be like a father figure of west indies cricket team. Overall a good boss should be a good humane.

Thanks Deepika for invitation. Boss should not be a figure the sub-ordinates frighten of.He should be a guide, leader, taking initiative to complete the goal/task assigned to his team/department. At the same time he should be having enough control on the team mind you, just enough control, not the Over-control on the team in case of urgent task/conflict case.

Perseverence because if your subordinates fail, u need to prod them on the path of success. Patience in dealing with all kinds of situations, Motivation to keep your team going and Knowledge to excel and guide becasue your subordinates are going to look up to you for answers and if you are found wanting, they would loose respect for you.
