The story of the migrant workers in Gulf countries start in India, when recruiting agencies fool them by giving non existent offers & take approx. Rs 50,000-1 lakh as visa & related fees.(which is against the labour laws in the Gulf)

On reaching Gulf the workers find the unexpected. Work conditions, Accomodation facilities, climate, living costs..everything beyond their expectations. They can't return because of the huge debt they've back in India, which mostly they've made 4 the recruiter's fee. Believe me, approx. max. saving/month 4 a construction worker in UAE,suffering all these is Rs5000.

Lack of press freedom or labour unions & abduction of passports in most of these countries add to this.

Now this has reached the level of slavery- physical & financial. A no: of reports r available on the web- One eg. below:

Gulf Govts blame India Govt for not effectively preventing the cheating of recruitment firms. What can we do within our country to stop this?

Governmental Employment Bank

idea posted by Shyne U Project Architect

India Govt should start its own manpower bank by taking applications from all levels like Village, Panchayat, Taluk etc. Overseas Govts/companies can approach Indian Foreign Ministry with their requirements for manpower which shall be reviewed by the Govt & interested applicants, properly informed can be supplied.

The whole process shall be transparent for all parties involved.

NIce idea Shyne, this will be totally transparent and every little detail will be know by both the employer and the employee, so there will be no such problems in the future...

Taking necessary action

I think the government should take necessary action against such illegal companies which are into such kind of business, and it should also take care when somebody is going abroad for the first time to whichever country it might be, giving all the necessary details and insight about the rules and regulations of that country, by which people will come to know what is happening, whether the agent is telling the truth or not, so this will empower people with the knowledge and take necessary action....so this will not only stop such kind of misdealings but also gives great insight for the traveller.....

our brethren working abroad, work for 10 -15 hours , for a few fistful of dollars.

work , earn dollars / riyals /pesos /rands  , take two shots of whisky and then sleep.

next day repeat the same procedure diligently.

it's an unending loop.

Exploitation galore!

Why are Indians so gullible? We fall for anything and don't question beliefs, systems and people? Also, we let ourselves fall to desperate levels then do anything for survival. Why stoop to such levels in the first place? We, as a country haven't grown up and believe everything that appers before us when actually we should be questioning everything that happens!

Spread the message and educate the masses about the reality

Strike at the root cause itself! Ever since the 70s, the poor workers have been lured mostly by ruthless agents in their home country with a false vision of fast bucks and comfortable lifestyle belying the reality. It's these agents who should be targeted by the governments concerned if the workers are to be saved from falling into these traps.

The hazards of liaising with such murky agents needs to be highlighted - using ads in media, spreading the message by word of mouth, through meaningful documentaries and even through local panchayats.

Let the masses get the message clearly that it's just not worthwhile to pledge your valuables for taking a loan and "investing" in the so called dream jobs.
