PROJECT MANAGEMENT

With software teams spanning the globe, including outsourcing and insourcing, Software Projects have become vastly more complex. The biggest complexity arises from the fact that the project manager cannot visualize progress. It is very easy to track progress in a civil engineering project by visually inspecting what is done and what is not.

Project Management is a science, whis is applicable either in Construction Industry or software Industry, People should understand the uniqness of these two industries. I worked for Google as well as LANCO Infratech a construction company both the places in Project Management Office, I see the preasure levels of the project manages same in both the industries as ultimately both have their own deliverablies, coordinations, time frames , budgets etc...

Here's my take.lets evaluate the complexity on these aspects

1.Risk

A Software PM will seldom need to estimate agreeable real life casualties during the execution of his project.Neither would an FIR be registered against him for negligence.

The real reputation and even well-being of  a civil PM is at any time a greater risk than that of a software PM.

It wont be unusual to find a software PM who bungled a Business Critical app that cost the client a fortune and still find a job elsewhere.

The civil PM is not so lucky.

2.Project Complexity

Here the Software PM 's job is much more difficult. S/he has to struggle through estimation to budgeting to final solution roll-out.

The civil PM ha the advantage of industry knowledge in terms of cost estimates published thru journals, engg drawings, master schedules from previous projects as a jump start, experience with dealing with the same skill set people.

here the Software PMs job is much difficult than the civil/construction PMs

3. Organizational liability

here it depends on the contract type and size.

while most civil projects will hv some kind of penalty clauses, some software projects also invite oenalties for deadline delays etc.

so on this account ..most civil PMs and some Software PMs invite stress.

4.Rework Options

You know this one .

On this account the civil pms job is unenviable

there are many such aspects..but it all boils down to one thing.

It aint an easy job any ways

Project is not alone civil engineering or software.Any thing you decide to accomplish pass through necessary processes.The methodology of  initiation proves whether it is tedious or dificult.
