SOLDIERS' QUALITIES - WHAT TO EXPECT ?

idea posted by Brigadier Sunil Chadha, Retd
greater numbers of ex armed forces personel are looking at the corporate world for second careers. there are, naturally, varied perceptions of what to expect from them. what shall we say are the attributes (both positive and negative) that we may expect from ex-servicemen. may we have ideas from your experiences or otherwise please.

Many of retired people from defence services like u mentioned, are joining the Organizations at senior level to become HR Heads (not core HR), after retirement. According to many articles ive read before and also frm my perspective, i guess they might possess administrative capabilities even thou many of them might not have the in-depth experience and exposure on different aspects of HR. It requires tremendous skill to manage people in varied situations, which i believe only an individual frm an armed force can possibly carry off smoothly. In the corporate field we have different individuals handling minute aspects but in defence it is dealt under one table and a single person is handling.

Officers in armed forces who have experience ranging frm 10 to 15 yrs have great knowledge and capability on man management and also the processing of the related factors. But this type is kinda diff frm tht of the corporate, so the appropriate training wil do for the officers, by the corporate. Ex-servicemen are experts in their own fort and may not be the ryt fit to head the HR function in any industry. But they are the best for the Administration part. Some of the qualities possessed by them cn possibly be loyalty, integrity, trust worthiness, agility, leadership, uprightness, aplomb, etc

openness to new ideas

idea posted by Inderpal Singh Dy. Director, Institute of Business Studies and Research (IBSAR)

It is essential for people from armed forces who wish to find employment in the corporate sector to be open to new ideas. These ideas could come from subordinates, seniors or even peers.

Being in the armed forces for a long time might bring about resistance in accepting ideas or being questioned by subordinates. This brings about calamity thereby creating dissonance in the organisation.
