New job is always a serious business and it means an even harder time when you are back after a lay-off from the job. We may hardly foresee the months of gap that awaits us when we put our career on hold due to some personal reason or other. Women employees often face the situation due to their maternal needs. Be it software programmer at a leading IT firm or mid-fielder at state level football team you always bump into the eerie feeling of anxiety and alienation.  So what can be done to ensure that you get acclimatized with the job after your lay-off successfully??

This can be done based on the background check and by reading industry blogs and trade publications to get current on news and trends. You should keep track of the key skills that are most sought after presently and if you feel that your expertise have started fermenting, then it's time to brew it up to the new level.

Hone skills even during lay off

Assume lay off as a gift to improve the skill and keep polishing / sharpening / updating, so that when re-entering, one will do better. Any one going out of touch during lay-off is just exiting from the skill.

Laying off not happens only when an employee fails to live up to an expectation of the corporate's objectives, but happens otherwise too, viz., intra-departmental rivalries, subjective assessments, cost and time over-runs of projects undertaken, improper manpower planning, etc. If its the failure of an individual, then he should expect to utilize the gap to hone his skills. If the re-entering happens due to failure of the corporates, per se, then whatever best you do, the democles sword hangs over the employee's head! The first and easiest thing the Management thinks is to reduce manpower in order to tie over the situation!

Just familiar with the skill that are using in organization. if there will be a bull in the house of goat they will either be scared or will take defence position. puranow mai likha hai jaisa desh waisa bhesh.
