Brain Drain which raised serious concerns in Indian economy a few years back, is witnessing a reverse trend. The first and the foremost factor is the economical slowdown. Many Indian professionals who were working and settled in abroad, have started returning back to India. According to the management executive, it means many expatriates are heading back home for work. What can be the reason behind it apart from recession? Do share your views....

Future of Global economy will shift from US/EUROPEAN region to Asia-Pacific region

idea posted by Deepak Agrawal Consultant, Independent Consultant

Current economy slowdown is one of the causes of reverse brain drain. However US/EUROPEAN economy is not going to provide accelerated growth rate for next decade or so. On the other hand Asia-Pacific region is growing at very good rate even at the time of recession and it is predicted that these economy will grow at faster rate particularly India & China in the next decade or so. Apart from this due to low growth in US/EUROPEAN region lot of companies are shifting their mode of growth to reverse innovation where product will be developed at developing countries like India & China and then the same innovation will be transferred to US/EUROPEAN region with little modification. It is just opposite of globalization where US/EUROPEN use to develop products at their home and then after little modification transfer it to developing market like India & China. This new trend of reverse innovation will make transfer of R&D & Manufacturing base from US/EUROPEN region to Asia-pacific region like India & China and to shift global economy from US/EUROPEAN region to ASIA-PACIFIC region with accelerated growth of brain drain.

but the challenge would be to retain all those people (talents) who r comming back. India can be quite fustrating- lack of infrastructure, babudom, etc.. if they still stay back.. grat wonder!

Better job security, more avenues for talent are leading to returning of brains.

Varsha pl don't blame them for going to foreign countries, their brains were not treated properly,Even after going there they have been helping our country by supporting their families financially.  Do U think that they don't have love for family and parents, they miss a lot. The scientist in India recognised once foreign country recognises. Much of the time awards for recognition are given posthumously.

Brain  Drain is better than Brain in Drain. Brain in Drain makes it obsolete . Brain Drain is reversable as Brain is intact.

Ultimately who will control you in India?

idea posted by Prasad PN Consultant, Trainer

US and other countries print dollars without bothering buys up all Indian companies irrespective of their sizes in the next 10 years and most of Indian companies will have 74% FDI and now tell me who will call the shots. We lack long term planning.

But these world leaders in business plan, plot and execute their moves on a long term strategy along with their political parties and governments. Where is such a vision or plan in India to become global leaders? What is our role in UN, World Bank, Internation affairs, influence etc.

Reverse Brain drain to India is temporary phenomenon

idea posted by Girish Shivakumaran Nair supervisory, Indian Air Force

The recent reverse Brain drain phenomenon is a temporary passe'. The moment the world economy picks up these NRIs would jump to greener pasture elsewhere if not the US. The only long lasting solution is to make it mandatory for all NRIs to support and materialise at least one project with a positive impact on our economy during their lifetime whereever they be.The project development should be semi govt ( govt - to provide legality) and the financial aspect should be through public equity.

Reverse brain Drain for India would be of great advantage in its development but it will need to be accepting mature age people in its workforce. Indian organisations looking for people below 40 will limit India access to some very talented NRIs who would like to contribute to India's Success and love for the motherland! No more ads stating AGE requirments

Yes surely there should be no age constraint, this will enable India to attract experts in all fields.

Exciting compensation packages

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

The organizations are not compromising on the talent and are ready to pay as much as 80% of the salaries the top level professionals are getting abroad. Adding to the advantage is the fact that last year has seen the rupee strengthening in value against the US dollar. The rising salary, the extra allowances and perks, the complete compensation packages are playing a major role in bringing back the professionals to India.

Both push and pull factors work

idea posted by Azhar Kazmi Professor, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals

Apart from recession, the reasons behind the brain gain (or reverse brain drain) could be both push and pull factors. Push factors might be recession itself, inconvenience of being an NRI, inability to adjust in the foreign environment, etc. Pull factors are better opportunities available in India, rising salaries, better infrastructure at least in gated communities, and improving telecommunications and other public utility services at least in metros. When the combined effect of the pull and push factors operates in favor of India it results in brain gain as is happening now albeit in a small way.

Ties to Family, Friends and Friendships are BIGGER factors that are reversing BRAINS ... in addition to non-acceptance of COMPLETE / TOTAL value of one's worth!

Changing Job Roles

idea posted by Ravi Kumar B N Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The current job trends are demanding for newer roles. Few years back the jobs were not demanding in dynamic skills as it is today.

Outsourcing has contributed to move jobs of lesser skilled role to offshore. Things which needs a production kind of role and work with not much thinking kind of jobs. Businesses have been deriving benefits out of this. The non core process has been outsourced and this has led to newer job roles.

The newer job roles requires quite a bit of thinking to apply.

Job losses in other countries...

idea posted by Yash Singh Coresspondent, Star

During the recession, India and China were the least effected countries and thus the job losses were not so much as it was in other countries. In India, recruiting was still going on which stopped in almost majority of the foreign countries. This was the main reason and beginning for reverse brain drain in India. Later, the strengthening of the rupee value in comparison to dollar value became another factor for the reverse brain drain...
