The numbers of DRDO's (Defence Research and Development Organization) top level scientists are decreasing at an alarming rate. With 20 top scientists resigning from the Organization in last six months, DRDO is now looking up to the ways for retaining its employees.

Top scientists are now going for better career opportunities. With the IT sector boom, the Companies are in hiring spree. The scientists, especially from the field of computer science, electronics and communication are being hired by the private sector extensively. Good salary packages, facilities and employees centric policies are attracting more and more scientists to the IT Companies.  SO, what can be done to solve this issue people?

Effective HR policies

idea posted by Smita Dalvi Sales/BD Manager, Hewlett-Packard

DRDO is now looking for new and more effective HR policies in order to retain its good scientists.  Scientists in a way will be wasted in these IT co's where they are not doing any innovation or any kind of research. So, its a waste of talent from these prestigious organization to the IT sector. Government should come up with good packages which matches these IT co's if not just for the sake of money we will end up loosing good scientists time and again.

in more than hundred million of population,we are not getting a 100 for nation and science. its really joking. science is not based on finance and high opportunity to prosper. it depends upon individual interest upon it. interested person should know how to get into it. so effective hr policy is mandatory.

Invest in them

Allowing the scientist to publish more research paper by providing good facilities to  which can be motivational, encouraging and will help them to take more interest in there work rather than going for private IT sector.

Offering the Scientist Facilities like higher salary package then private sector, nice working environment etc can be very help full.

I agree to the idea of allowing more research papers to take place because without research (and development) where would we be today? Those two tasks both work together and go hand in hand creating new things, in essence, the creation of new ideas.

DRDO has to look for someone who commits and apt for that role. If an employee is always looking for hike or huge salary then definitly he will not be a perfect employee. The employee must be dedicated and satified himself for a particular role or for a particular job. In my way those employees looks for only Pay will not apt for a scientist role. Commitment for the project/role must be there for an employee. So company has to hire who gives 100% for themselves. Organization also has to take care of employee satisfaction to retain them.

Give Dog a bone to chew....

As an R&D professional working in Private sector on to defense technology, i had an honor to work with few ex-DRDO professionals, firstly they are very committed & enriched with experience this makes them instant hit with private sector and only tool that public sector(to curtail attrition) offers is job security, post recession everyone has made a norm to ask for the same at-least at senior level. besides comparing the modus operandi of public sector and private sector, later offers more favorable and adaptable environment towards research whereas induction of newer technologies, hardware & work practices are quiet easy in private sector. Screening system at DRDO make them have the best of talent pool in the country and with best working environemt and access to latest technology makes this best talent flow toward private sector. One thing that also fuels the fire is that the lack of market ready personnels in private sector make DRDO scientist more approachable.

Allow private sector professionals to join DRDO without restriction

If there is an attrition, get professionals from private sector. Why are Government institutions so conservative about hiring and why do they have age restrictions ?

National Shame

Government of India is ignoring talents on whom they had invested not only money, the pride of this country - our sovereignty is solely dependent on the kind of Research and Development they focus to keep the country's defense capability on par with the developed and developing nations! If we fail to recognize these aspects, its a National Shame, nothing else!

Quit relying on experience....

This problem is there in almost all Central Government/ Public Sector Enterprises...... What the people have got to realise is that while experience plays a very important role in decision making, it is the most dangerous dilution to innovation........ Undoubtedly, DRDO has been faced with a sudden shortage of experience based expertise but to a company like DRDO which has been constituted for the purpose of R&D, this should act as a catalyst in implementing newer ideas from their younger scientists... they can also always recruit new people..... there is no shortage of manpower in India... DRDO has got to realise that talent is nobody's monopoly...... its high time the DRDO people realised this fact & start developing their younger section by providing them more opportunities.. there is no need for any pay hike..... as somebody rightly mentioned above, a person who is truly interested in innovation would never leave DRDO for an IT company if DRDO truly provides him a platform to exhibit his abilities & talent.... What I feel is that this factor is missing in DRDO..... DRDO should seriously start examining there Technical side of the coin before looking into HR policies.... As someone said Research papers may slightly boost the morale of scientists but what is really needed is the practical implementation of the ideas presented in those papers as this gives the researcher the ultimate satisfaction.... DRDO needs to start reconstructing their Technical wing w.r.t to Delegation of Powers & lead time in implementing decisions....... Urgent decentralisation may be needed.......

yes ! the thing is thatas some one is working in DRDO means it is not just a job, profession but it is pride for india & pride for him also as a petrotism, so working with DRDO is not a job only if people are switching from DRDo means they are not merged in completely in their profile ;the second part is DRDO HR should improve their policies to retain the manpower by evolutating difcferent policies.
