Is your PC secure? Are you hacker proof? Can bad software sneak onto your PC? Is your PC security dragging down your on-line experience? It's a sad fact that we have to be concerned about PC safety.

It's even sadder that many of the so-called security programs are ineffective or resource killers or just too complicated to deal with!

So, how to secure your PC?

Use a strong password

idea posted by Mahalakshmi Subramanium QA/QC Manager, Genpact

The danger: malicious computer users can gain access to your computer over the Internet, stealing and deleting data and potentially implanting viruses and Trojan horses.

The cause:

The major irony of Microsoft's shift from non-password protected home operating systems like Windows 98 and ME to the password and access-list based 'security' of Windows 2000 and XP is that your data is actually less secure by default.

Thus, one need have a very strong password to have a secured PC

same here...try different combination of letter, number and symbols... use upper case n lower case  for extra security..

password with proper length is an best thing to secure our data... coz some time... these spy wares also turn into spy's..........

you are right, Ms.Mahalakshmi,

Using strong pass word is a must to protect.

its funny seeing some of the replies. I have never got my PC crashed/virus affected. for the record i dont use windows and hence no problem of installing those antivirus softwares/spybot search n all. switch to Linux if u believe "Prevention is better than cure". Its free too. just my two cents

Remove Spyware (Spybot Search and Destroy)

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

Another tool is Spybot - Search & Destroy. This works a lot like Adware, but having both will further protect your computer.
It detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies.

If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Have Backup Ready

idea posted by Sheetal Jadhav Sales/BD Manager, Future Group
I personally lost a lot of important files due to viruses a few years back but from there, I learnt. Maybe it is hard for those who are less familiar in IT to learn to backup things or to keep things safe, but that is the way it is. I have articles about ISO images for backup and restore your hard drive but I would rate it as an intermediate computer article. Thus, the easiest way is to copy them into CDs or DVDs and copy the files into an external drive. Have a ready backup of all the file for safety...

"Use strong password"

idea posted by Brajesh Kumar Assist. Programmer, Yoctel Solutions Pvt. Ltd
I am suggested to use strong password to save information with the combination of numeric & alphabet because stong password is more secure than weak password.Hackers to hack the password through algorithm may take lots of time tobreak password.

Suggestions for common users

idea posted by Abhijit Anand Prabhudan Admin/Facilities Manager, Ca*****
The easiest way is to buy and use linux based computers from the likes of acer,hp,dell and lenovo, they do sell preinstalled linux computers..., also google chrome os is going to change all..... Besides its easy to install, use linux these days with distros such as ubuntu, mint and centos. For those who do require windows for their work, my step by step suggestion is to: 1.Create separate user accounts for internet, office work and personal use 2.Follow strong password standards, and change password every week. 3.Use software like truecrypt or in case of windows 7 enterprise bitlocker to encrypt data. 4.For really important data and applications, if you have a powerful computer, store them in a virtual machine using vmware player or virtualbox, also with windows 7 its possible to boot into vhd directly. 5.Most of old computers can be migrated to virtual machine using tools like paragon go virtual. 6.Kernel level virtualization can be implemented on XP using icore virtual accounts, its the most effective way to secure XP these days. 7.Many computers now come with biometric authentication system, though there effectiveness is in doubt. 8.Always use antivirus and scan daily. 9.Always backup to a local external hard disk and also online to cloud based backup. 10.Also use only modern secured browsers like firefox or chrome, anyone using internet explore is inviting exploits!

Careful before installin Third Party application

idea posted by Chris C MMS Student, Mumbai University

maximum problems r caused by third party installations. ppl shud be careful b4 doin that, only install products from a known company. dont use crack or patch very often as usually it contains virus or trojan. Nvr alter ur registry unless ur well aware of the pros and cons. always clean ur registry using a good software. use a proper UPS and spike guard to protect it from voltage fluctuations and hence system crashes. remove lan from ur PC durin thunder. these r the few things wich can be done to protect and secure ur pc for a long uninterrupted run..
