I am a normal person like you and everybody out there, I am not the one who is going to Copenhagen summit to discuss what are the things that needs to be done to reduce global warming, but then it is also our responsibility to act on this issue which has made the whole world to take notice and act upon it as soon as possible to save the planet.

Let us not get into bigger things which will help reducing global warming like smarter grid, renewable energy, and carbon footprint and all. Lets us get into the bottom of the pyramid here where everybody can understand how a normal person like you and me can help to fight this global warming and in a way help fight climate change. Switch of the light when not in use

idea posted by Padmaja Baskar Product Development Manager, ONGC

I mean this may be a simple step, but seriously tell me how many of you will follow it religiously to turn of the light when not in use, if we do that we in a way will be helping out a lot against global warming that is happening, and will also be saving energy, and if this simple step is followed by all, I mean each and every person in this whole planet, just imagine the change that we can bring with this simple gesture. Please switch off your lights when not in use.

And this is why I have created this simple Idea contest in which everybody can participate irrespective of whether they have a prior knowledge of what is happening in the world summit where all the world leaders are discussing plans to lower carbon emissions. So pour in your simple steps which will help fight against climate change.

This very good idea was propagated by me some 10 years before to the Airport Authority of Delhi and Mumbai. It pays off well immdly and there will be saving of power, stop pollution.

I agree to the idea of switching off light when not in use, every where, starting from home.

Grow as much as possible Basil plants.

idea posted by Prakash Saitwal Technical Support Manager, Aditya Birla Management Corporation P. Ltd.

Basil plants (Tulsi), apart from it's medicinal properties, have got maximum capacity to absorb carbon from atmosphere and purify air. So, please grow as much as Basil plants as possible in your back garden, gallery, whereever you have space.

And see the results!!

Ooooooo thatz great ........ I live in Brigade Gardiner with my borther ...... and I not seen a single plant around, apart from the bulding's garden (one of the best thing they have done - its nice ) ....... but for 504 families only 50/100 trees around ......... I asked few of people around and their answers is ... where is the place .... management is not allowing them ..

Hi sanjay,

I have seen many smallest apartments, growing Basil Plants, either in pots or "Vrundavan". May be put conveniently in balcony.

So, 50% of apartments grow atleast one plant. Rest 50% of tenaments/bungalows grow as much as plants as possible. That will make significant diffeence.

Keep looking for ideas and ways to bring them to reality. Excuses do not help anybody.

Great thoughts by Padmaja. Very simple and easy to implement. We must teach our family to habituate this habit.

Turn off your vehicle at Traffic signals

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

I mean this is as simple as it gets by turning off their vehicles at traffic signals, where one can contribute his or her bit to help bring change in global warming that is happening and also help in climate change regard, and imagine how much pollution we will be reducing by this and how much fuel will be saved by this. I really appreciate Ms. Padmaja who has brought out this issue, where simple person like me and all can come up and give ideas, thanks for the referral.

I will like to add a little information here. Engine takes 4 minutes of fuel for start-up, when started from cold condition. Momentary stoppage at traffice signal will not burn that much fuel. Rather idling (keeping engine on when vehicle is stopped) consumes more fuel.

Turning off Engine at traffic signal will save fuel as well as help in reducing carbon emissions. I do it religiously.

0

Have you ever given a thought, how much a machine consumes to start up?

its takes around 2/3 mins of fule burn of a running vehicle and 4/5 min. of a standing vehicle to start a vehicle ...... and on Indian roads their are around only 5% of vechicle start at the first try....

I like every simple steps suggested by you to save the nature. We proud human beings like to show our capacity in terms of everyday resources use. Every body should remember that the job of the soul inside you is to record the deviations you have made in your life time in respect of the prescribed rule of the nature. it governs the rebirth of a living creature as well as the life span of a planet. Simple living is our culture and we should believe in it.

@ Sanjay Sir

Agreed sir, in cities this option is highly improbable. Space is less, maintainance is difficult and other related problems. Even I have planted in my home town & in the cantonment areas where free space is not a problem. But if you are questioning the practicability of this option then i would say that it's difficult but not impossible. At-least we should be willing to try and remain positive. If planting a tree is difficult then we can maintain a garden. These small steps cumulatively would help a lot. Maybe I am an over-optimist but I think I am doing my bit.

ps : India's forest cover has marginally increased this year .......... must be some reason for that !!!

0

Hi Suvrajit,

Sorry, but thatz a living things' nature - to grow every year ;).

Just think about the total population of India (only) ...... do you think we have that much space ...... and it is highly inpossible in cities ........ where people are still on road side ...

And have you ever given a thought, who take care about those plants/trees ...

and now a days you don't find plant free .... so nobody willing to buy and do a social work for others ...... and they don't want to waste their own space ..

how many houses built last and this year, and how many houses you have seen a small garden or space for a plan ....... apart from your religious plants ....

think practically ... how many of your friends have done that .. or to how many friends you asked "Dude, lets go and plant somewhere or clean the public garden near my/your house" .... instead of "Dude lets party"

Evolve "ECO-HOME" concept, march towards sustainability

idea posted by Paramesh H Associate Manager -Corporate Environment, GMR Energy

I strongly support towards all members ideas. We are normal people, but we can make special activities which do contribute towards reduction of global impacts.

each of us should think about to usage of sustainable energy forms. As it is been rightly put plan your houses with CFL's (Energy efficient), Solar Water-heaters, PV-systems for your computers, TV's and Roof garden for pollution-free air, rain-water harvesting, simple-ways of "switch-off when not in use" etc., are some of the simpler ideas that each individual can afford with proper planning.

"LETS CONTROL THE THINGS WHICH IS IN OUR HAND, BEFORE IT SLIPS OFF"

3
1

i m fully support ur idea because it is very important our future ,ECO-HOME good

in ECO-HOME we use solar plates for electricity

BIO gas for fooding purpose

and heating water at solar plates

land we use to produce vegitable

and cold water circulating for A.C

that type of house have a initial cost is high but we paid only one time and enjoy life time.................with nature ..................and we use polutaion free enery........and save" EARTH "

1

Also, there should be certain guidelines from Municipal Administrators towards adopting solar energy and certain tax benefits on these green energy resources.

And, planning to be made to introduce taxation after certain amount of energy consumption or billing

0

Further, how many of us thinking to balance our CARBON FOOT-PRINT by planting trees & growing them.... how many of us understand about the local species of saplings and growing them...

Everyone says they have planted trees, how many of it has been retained till now.

"THINK OF GREEN LOCAL PLANTS, BALANCE YOUR CARBON EMISSION RATE"

Common Transport, reduce fule burning

idea posted by Sanjay Beedi Senior Software Engineer, Bhea Knowledge Technologies (P) ltd.

1. use of general transport - Bus, train and may use cycle for shorter distances

2. once a week no vehicles.

3. use natural resources (Sun lightt, Wind)

4. reuse of stuff - less/no plastic, recycle

these are all old stratgies, people know about all this but not ready to follow them ........

Best way to implement is to make it a rule / enforce it / offence should be punishable.

1. no plastic in general places

2. one day of the week no private vehicles on road

something like ............ these are all public issues, and should be solved like this ........... this is the only way ......... We never listen - "Suggestions are never welcome for us..."

i'll give you an example: previously health minstry advertised about "washing hands", how many of you followed that ... not me :)

but after this bird/swin/etc flue people said wash hand for precaution ...... thousands of people did that ........

Another example: helmet: it saves - doordarshan spent lakhs of money on it - "marzi hai aapke akhir sar hai aap ka" ......... what happened nothing .......

now traffic policy added the rule / enforced to ware helmet ........ 70% of the people are following it ....

there are other issues which are personal like save electricity water and all - for that technology is the solution .......... like heat dectors - if no body is detected automaticall switch off the lights and all ........ similarly with the water and other resources ........... because I know sometimes I forget things ......... in my buzy shedule, I know about this but I forget - you can call irresponsible .. but thaz fact ...

Yes Mr. Sanjay you are right here, by enforcing I think things will change, until and unless we enforce the public they don't give a damn and will take things for granted, and if we enforce then there will be no option but to follow..but then with so much corruption even after enforcing it will be difficult to keep up, but somewhat we can contribute to climate change by enforcing things.

Segrgate bio Degradble waste and compost

idea posted by T S POORNANANDAN CEO/MD/Director, Pace Solutions (Bangalore)

We throw away lot of Bio Waste into Garbage which inturn is carried away in the lorries, which affect the environment, by means of pollution. Each household segregate the bio waste and put in the Composter, it will become good manure. It can be either used for gardening or recyled to the Mother earth..in its pure form

I have started doing this for the past one year using the "Kamba" 3 Mudpot type of arrangement stacked one over the other.

Generate solar Power in your Houses & Buildings

idea posted by Vinod Jain Chief Operating Officer-Indian Ops, Amperion South East

If we all start generating solar power in our houses/buildings and create a movement to force Government to make it compulsary for local Power distribution companies to buy this power at a fixed price, then I am sure we can save our planet. Look around and see how WIND energy fellows have got this facility. Europe has a policy on Solar Power and distribution company buys this power at Rs 35 per unit(KWH). To start with cost of power may look high but once we start then cost will come down with volume and the cost of conventional power will go up. I am sure by 2020 the solar power will be cheapest and most preferred. its a question of starting the implementation seriously.

Carry your own bag to the Grocery shop

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

I mean every time we go to a grocery shop or do shopping at retail outlets, we  get these plastic bags or paper bags each time right, so why not take our own bags while shopping and avoid these plastic and paper bags given by the shopkeeper, and in a small way we are contributing to a cause which gives immense pleasure..

Also all other ideas are also very good, like Mr. Prakash's Basil plants solution, will try that, and also the roof top garden, Carpooling is a great way where one can reduce emissions, really a good set of ideas from all and thanks padmaja for the referral.

Do Audit your Energy always

idea posted by Amar Nath Mukherje Top Management, Synergy Power

If we all collectively conscious of energy consumtion in home,Office and Industry and take measure for saving , we may be able to reduce power generation which in turn may cause reduction of carbon considerably.

1)       We are constructing High rise buildings , why we are making Overhead Tank for water at the roof for a building of 30 plus to be used by ground floor dwellers causing wastage of power for pumping of water and creating unnecessary high pressure at lower floor water taps creating frequent failure of taps and inconvenient handling of water when tap opens.

2)       Keeping roofs unexplored from solar energy which receives solar radiation i.e. use of solar cells, solar geyser, and solar oven to extract the waste energy and minimize fuel bill , reduction of electricity and gas demand.

3)       Cook food exact to the requirement and to avoid surplus food , surplus food is required to be preserved in refrigerator and then again to be heated before consumption.. It will save electricity to a greater extent.

4)       Use always Pressure Cooker at the time of cooking and take only measured amount of water. More water means more energy / fuel/ gas consumption.

5)       Clean all light bulbs regularly to remove dust which reduces illumination and causes unnecessary  loading of heat to the room air conditioning

6)       Keeping the cooking burner always intact to cause efficient burning of fuel. Also mirror effect to be made in the bottom of burner so that heat radiated out in lower direction can be utilized to some extent.

7)       Whenever Pressure cooker whistle blows ,.Just sim the heating  , and keep the cooker out of heat and do not allow to whistle  On every  blow of  the steam  lot of energy get lost in the form of Latent Heat i.e. 580 cal/gm of steam vented over and above the temp. of the steam

8)       Room light to be divided on two categories one for safety, in connection of personal movement ,by CFL lamp of lower watt , and using of table lamp for attending task at task point.

9)       Using of white paint in the outside of the building/roof in such way ,which can help reflection of solar radiation and keep the room inside cool reducing A/C load.

10)       Using glass panes of windows with reflection films or polarized glass to reduce radiated solar heat entering to the room through window glass pane

11)       To keep the dwelling house doors and windows air tight to avoid any entry of outside hot/cold air to keep the room comfortable and thus reducing load of A/C .

Let us popularize use of Bicycles on Sundays and holidays and Government declare holiday for petrol pumps on Sundays/holidays

Let all the schools hold Nature and Environment retreat for 2 weeks in Nature park and students given assignment on making eco-friendly products with prizes for best 100 or more to popularize awareness for environment protection ...

Solar Cookers/heaters must become the talk of the day for domestic use on a wider scale in rural areas and Government must give more subsidy and grants to manufacturers ...

Hydrogen is projected as the Fuel of The future ... Hydrogen in cylinders or some plant substitute or bio-fuel can be used with air/oxygen combustion in the automobile engine with little modification in the engine ... I feel it is good idea for research/experiment .
