There is low response on adapting Solar energy - Why do you think people are not switching to it?

What do you say guys? Let us discuss here......

Lack of Awareness & High Initial Cost

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

I believe lack of awareness and the high initial costs of the equipments for tapping solar energy is the common reason. Government has to take necessary steps or else we will face the consequences........Any thoughts !!!

yes it will be success in indian market but why we forget that we can generate electricity on the basis of energy only because can be generated or destroyed it will be with us last long

and if u generate electricity by absorbing energy only then we can also generate electricity for 24 hrs

I am not awrae of the cost and that is why I support lack of awareness.

Product Standard & Pricing

idea posted by N. NAGESHWARAN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, M/s. KEC INTERNATIONAL LTD. (an RPG group)

It's correct the awareness level has not gained much among people. Also the convertion cost of Solar energy is still higher as lots of initial assembly & commission cost works out which is higher and general public are yet not come to that standard to acquire it.

Also till date no proper standardization has been implemented by Govt. to follow a particular standard with fixed pricing, people are not switching to it.

In my view point, the issue in india is with respect to quality and pricing.  Most of the projects are driven by government agencies (tenders).

There are many companies in India making PV systems..in this how many of them really adhere to the MNRE specs?  I saw a 10A charge controller couple on months back and the manufacturer claimed that it meets MNRE specs.  When i opened it, this is a simple primitive on-off charger designed using a standard op-amp and few resistors.  No temperature compensation was implemented.

The market here is mainly driven by cost with less emphasis on standards and regulations.

I agree to that is no proper standardization by the government.

Also the cost of converting the solar energy is very high. The initial cost of set up is very high, also the batteries have to be replaced every 3 years so there is lot of cost involved in it.

I agree with both the points mentioned bt Mr.Nageshwaran.Moreover solar energy installation requires a large area for the system to be efficient in providing a source of electricity. This may be a disadvantage in areas where space is short, or expensive (such as inner cities) and also the location of solar panels can affect performance, due to possible obstructions from the surrounding buildings or landscape. So these are few of the shortcomings of using solar energy which may be preventing people from generating electricity for their homes.

Effeciency is a Question Mark

idea posted by Padmaja Baskar Product Development Manager, ONGC

At the moment, sadly, electricity from coal, oil and gas-burning power stations are far more effective and economic since the environmental impact is completely neglected. Solar enery is a environmental free source of energy. But it is not very effecient and effective. Especially in unpredictable conditions. Solar energy cannot be depended on throughout the year. And the solar energy available for domestic use drains out soon. So people are not willing to compromise on that. An

Any business whichinvests will look out to break even in 5 to 7 yrs time. With high initial setup costs and annual maintenance costs the investors will look to book profits after the above period. Will the utility pay that much per unit for the developer / investor. There must be regulations, directives, incentives from the GOI to encourage the investors in this zone. Watch till solar policy is announced, where are the potential sites and where  the energy produced has to be consumed, who will bear the transmission costs a lot of questions unanswered.

But who knows what will happen to the solar policy after 7 years .

The efficiency of solar equipment is less and its initial cost is high ..This is the reason why the people are not preferring Solar energy

idea posted by vecha Tech Support Engineer, M.I. qatar

Cental government and state governments should l make egislations and create necessary infrastructure such as organized supply and distribution of customised products to suit different catagories of people. There are so many HNI who can afford to have solar panels for domestic use. There must be Private and pumblic participation is required to take solar SPV systems to the people. Government must commit itself to spend a fixed % of money on Govt buildings etc to create solar power for their captive use. Manufacturing companies should conduct SPV-product fairs in different cities and towns so that awareness can be increased among the people. There must be a hassel free system for the customer to adopt the SPV-systems interms of financial assistance, less paper work etc.

Climate & Nature

Unstable climatic & Natural conditions also hinder a lot in usage of Solar Energy as at high altitudes due to fog and rain the solar cell would not get full charged for use.

Rate of Charging in multiple

idea posted by N. NAGESHWARAN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, M/s. KEC INTERNATIONAL LTD. (an RPG group)

Solar cells as well as the chargers are to be manufactured in such a way that in very less time with Solar light the back up charge could be atleast doubled or trippled. So that in rural areas, where the depedency on electricity is very high with lots of obstacles, could be resolved easily.

Product awareness free campaign to be done.

After installation free maintenance of atleast 3yrs as warrantee to be implemented as after sales backup.

Market should be fed with easy availability of spares / components.

OFCOURSE THE INITIAL ISTALATION COST OF SOLAR ENERGY IS MORE ,BUT IN LONG TERM IT IS CHEAPER BECAUSE OF NIL MAITENANCE.

HENCE IT IS REQUIRE TO BRING THE REVOLUTION AMONG THE INDIAN PEOPLE, LIKE WHITE , GREEN AND PRANAYAM REVOLUTION.

Bad bussiness model & technical problem.

idea posted by Mani Kant Mishra SBU/Profit Center Head, FOR CLOSEED GROUP

I am not adding awareness due to few reasons. Most popular example;

In 1993-94 awareness of Mobile was very rare in India, now everybody knows about it. At that time cost of mobile hand set was also very high. At that Time there was only problem was govt. support & low volume. After govt. support pvt. players does wonder. After some technical improvement, now volume is in billions.

According to me once bussiness model is prepared than it will be a hit.

Now days problems are high cost of solar panel & inverters or batteries cost. researchers are already looking for alternate low cost solar panels with high efficiency. Once this  will be solved than we see the growth like bull.

Govt, channels to subsidise Avterisement for solar energy

idea posted by Charles davison Project Manager, Douglas OHI LLC

TV channels Shold come forward to subsidise or give a few seconds free of cost to propogate the awareness to the masses. This will surely make a lot of difference because TV advt has and will be in days to come the Highest audience for any product.

Efficiency to the cost factor!

idea posted by Vishnu M. Head - Software QA/QC , UAEEXchange & Financial Services Ltd.

Thing I found when I tried to electrify my home with the solar energy is that the utility to the cost or the efficiency to the cost factor is low.

Facts

1. PV (Photo Voltaic) Module efficiency is very low and it varied from 7 to 20 percentage. (Researches are going in America to find a "Super PV" that have a conversion rate of around 50 %. ).

2. Rate for electrifying a couple of fans, 2 bulbs, 2 tubelights and 2 cfl for around 10 hours a day with a couple of battery, invrter and pv module, crosses the one lakh mark. (My house hold electric connection is way cheaper than this and comes to an average of Rs. 400 - 600 per month)

3. Less number of players and low competition keep the prices high.

4. Mass production of PV modules haven't yet started to get the benefit out to he public.

Anert (Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology ) kerala have issued subsidy to the solar inverters, which costs around 9 to 11k. But it is difficult to get hold of a module, as of now none is available!
