I was recently discussing the importance of the buying function in Europe Vs India especially in highly consumer trend driven products like apparel and accessories.

It came to my attention that in India, the buying/procurement function; even in large format retail stores of reputed names like Westside or Lifestyle are not very transparent or professionally handled.

It is mostly the personal relations, likes & dislikes of a few key stakeholders that drive the buying. There is also a lot of corruption involved.

The human/networking angle is never absent even in the world's largest and most professionally run retail stores but it is not as rampant or driven by personal agendas as it is in India.

In more developed markets there is a greater focus on studying consumer buying behavior, market perception, global and regional trends and past performance of brands and other such scientific data before making buying decisions.

How can buying/procurement be made better in India?

Please drop in your ideas & suggestions.

For example do we need a national level "Buyers professional association" that cuts across product categories and focuses on best practices and so forth?

I also agree that we do need a national level "Buyers professional association" which cuts across product categories and focuses on best practices.

Integrate buying and marketing functions

This will ensure that the customer focus is sharper and buying is not happening in a vacuum without relevant inputs from customer behavior feedback and trend tracking.
