Google's aversion to advertising its search engine on TV ended with a bang on Sunday night as the company paid an estimated $5m to run a commercial during the Super Bowl in US. The minute-long spot marks the biggest venture into mainstream advertising for a company that has become notorious growing almost exclusively through word of mouth and online exposure.

Amid dozens of ads which focused on cars, beer, and busty women, the Google spot definitely took a different approach: it tells a love story through a series of search queries. The tale begins with a query for “study abroad paris france”, moves on to “impress a french girl” and eventually makes it all the way to “how to assemble a crib”, showcasing Google’s technology in a way that pretty much everyone can relate to.

Here I would like to ask you all, why all of a sudden Google is into advertisement, tell me when you remember google coming out with ads, So, people Why are we seeing Google enter into advertising? when without ads it has reached to a  more than $12 Billion entity.

It's because of Google v/s Bing

idea posted by Smita Dalvi Sales/BD Manager, Hewlett-Packard

I mean why would anybody spend millions for an adslot at super bowl game, it was visible how Google is feeling the heat from competitors - in particular Microsoft's Bing search engine. I think Microsoft's was almost certainly behind the decision to try and advertise to such a large audience. "This pretty much confirms that Google is absolutely feeling the pressure from Bing. Till now the company has never, ever seriously advertised its core search offerings before in this manner. And now all of a sudden a super bowl ad which will be viewed by millions together. It had to do with Bing which was gaining momentum bit by bit and $5 million is nothing spent from their $12 billion kitty.

Almost all internet users are using google/Other search engines. So the market is saturated. Only way to develop business is to widen the entire market by attract the people who are not internet users.

I support ur views.  As any new entrant poses threat to existing players.  May not be taking away its position but market share will be definitely reduced.  Bing's progress must have triggered Google to emphasize users for sticking to it.

Competition has its own merits!!

idea posted by Makrand Bhave Marketing & MICE, WIZCRAFT International

Competition can make one take a hard look at oneself and rethink strategies. So far google was enjoying all the fringe benefits of being the first stepper in the direction of being the sole search portal with spped, efficiency and accuracy for anything under the sun!!

competition is healthy and has made google actually reach out to people real time with an ad that is so synergised with its cofre functionality. i think the step is good and progressive. Its a strategy war that has just begun... Wait and watch what elese can happen!!! Nice ideation Smita :)

Google is already into advertising in a very big way so I am not surprised. Internet users are already familiar with Google product videos. Its would be nice to see them on TV now.

Making a mistake scienticts running a company would

“Google is run by three computer scientists. We’re going to make all the mistakes computer scientists running a company would make. But one of the mistakes we’re not going to make is the mistake non-scientists make. We’re going to make mistakes based on facts and data and analysis.” — Eric Schmidt

Everything inside Google is based on algorithms , i mean seriously while hiring they take somewhere 10 -15 interviews all different in nature ,place and time ( given to the candidate to attend ).They even have an algo which predicts when an employee is likely to leave :)

So if a company is run in such a smart way ,This ad campaign has some logic and analysis behind it rather than just the casual ads all other companies do .There are only two kinds of companies in this world ,one is Google and the other --well all others :)

Facebook will make Google think

idea posted by Srideep Mitra Marketing Consultant, TestPlant

Facebook beat Google for following recently and that triggered Google to launch Buzz. The superbowl ad is because people think Google is for granted. It is good and productive . But thats it. It has become the typical Ramu kaka of Indian household. Always their to help, mend but people take it for granted.  Facebook is the new beautiful neighbour complicated but interesting. Google positioning has always been . Simple. Only the search bar. But today the 65 followers are not simple but multitasking folks who love the mash/mesh. Thats facebook 1 million developers from 180 countries. Facebook has become a mix breed of open source and Walmart.  World largest virtual retail store.

But Ramu Kaka alias Google needn't worry in the short term. Since its value proposition is comeplling. How.? For all the data that gargled out now are all via Google search.

So Google should not ape the beautiful neighbour (facebook) they are two different things  . It should think something more engaging rather spending money on advertisement. Which instead of strengthening the brand is weakeing it.
