According to me what attracts people to a retail store is their low price, various offers and discount schemes. So this is used as a promotion strategy by most of the Retail stores. And I feele it is the best... |

but my frnds according to indian mentality middle men they are very much comfortable but its depend upon the target segment of the organisation ...it segmented to upper middle or lower class as upper class hate or feel low to enter into discounted store as it hurt thier status abd the people of lower or middle that bring smiles to thier faces....
and retail business are working on cash type and that lead to very hard to cut down the prices for offers and discounts...
well according to my knowlege now people are aducated and they would first preffer SERVICE....
and a man can ready to go to different place for shop only bcos of the service that retail outlet gives...it adds value to thier business and overall perfoarmance
But Shailena, if you want to offer discounts, you have to bring your own costs down in order to maintain profitability. How are you going to do this. Effective management of the supply chain can help in doing this.
I agree with Shailena. Normally people get attracted to Retail malls by seeing their Discounts and various offers. To succeed, I think we should promote this strategy.

It all depends on which customer the store is targeting. The retail store has to decide what its order winners and qualifiers are. If its order winner is price, ie, it is targeting customers who are price sensitive, it can offer low prices and standard quality goods. At the same time, a store for which order winner is quality can sell exclusive quality goods while keep ing prices high and still sell to a segment for which price is immaterial. |

also i must add to it is the way u present your services, be it merchandise display or the customer service etc. which all play role in bringing in the customer.
it all depends on the target segment. else the malls would have been opened in villages. but at the same time ' sasta, suder & tikaoo ' still holds its roots amongst the middle class people. people in gurgaon have different life style as compared to that of in ghaziabad where the percentage of middle class is higher and customers go for lower prices but these pricing has to be EDLP - every day low price kind which means your pricing is competitive to your competitor's pricing which is not easy. one way could be by introducing private lebels.i can say that it has to be product with price mix that will guide traffic flow in the outlets.

Say its a lifestyle store selling top brands. And discounts for them means cut on their margins. So mark downs is the only solution towards it ..???

Whereas at the front end the display of goods, advertisment and pricing will play an important role to play in the success of a retail store at the back end it is the way the supply chain is being managed. Effective supply chain management can help improve margins even for low price stores. |

Ok. Thanks.
Dear Deepak,
Supply chain management does not ignore holding costs. In fact, supply chain management looks at total cost incurred in the chain. SCM is a holistic approach, looks at things in totality. It is not an isolated view of cost.
I agree. But, don't you think Supply Chain Concepts ignore Holding Cost in general, which results in product getting outdated.

Most of the customers have an idea of what they are looking for but retailers hardly give them a convinient platfrom where the get to see what they want. I believe this is one side where Indian Retailers have opportunites to improve. |

Surely i agree with Mr. Deepak, thats the reson you find a same person shopping more if he/she is shopping in a super market where they help them self by moving around i.e. window shopping... gr8 catch

Discounts..Discounts... definitely any customer would love it. But from the retailer point of view direct mark downs 20%,30 % or 40 % means hitting the sword on your margins.Today even the discount stores are not being successfull by the means 70 %,... |
