Firming up a national strategy to fight global warming, the Prime Minister's council on climate change today discussed an ambitious Rs 91,684 crore mega-plan proposing to make India a global leader in solar power in the next few decades.

The council members are understood to have deliberated issues such paying a subsidy of Rs 82,000 crore to produce an ambitious 200,000 MW of solar power by 2050.

As per the mission document, it plans to achieve parity with coal-based thermal power generation by 2030 after which expansion of solar-generated power, it hopes, would face no technical or cost constraints.

How government should implement it?

Lack of awareness

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

Lack awareness about solar energy is the biggest problem. The government should generate awareness about the usage of solar energy so that the usage of solar energy can be increased. When people used all kinds of platforms during the recent elections, why can't we use platforms like online, media and radio to make sure that people are constantly reminded about the uses of solar, and this will make sure that people take notice of what is important in regard to the environment, then slowly people will come to terms with solar, it should be a gradual change and will surely have an impact as many of them whom we find in such platforms are of elite group of the society who will take initiative and drive things for such things.

Definitely lack of awareness is there about the use of solar energy. When I asks about the use of solar cookers & water heating system to the people they argue that it takes much time as compare to micro-wave/OTG,immertion rod/elect heater. In villeges people are cutting trees as available free fuel for cooking.people  are needed to aware that for your present you are destroying the future gneration. If even 20% homes can make use of solar energy for cooking & water heating, tons of fossile fule can be saved and each home will contribute for carben credit. NGOs with GOVT is needed to come forwarded for increasing awarenessamong the people.New multi storied, housing projects, commertial buildings should given some subsidy & as water haresting it should be made compelsory to use at least solar water heating system.

Encourage Micro / Mini Solar plants at village level

idea posted by Lingaraju Jaddivada Head International Marketing, Nagarjuna Fert & Chem

Solar Energy initiative of GoI is very good step in going for the sustainable energy plan through renewable sources like solar energy.

The option could be having huge plants in the deserts and unused land spaces  or building roof tops. Technically speaking any roof top or corridor exposed to sun can have solar panels or solar cells to capture the solar energy.

However, apart from generating in the day time storing the same for use in night time cause serious constraint for totally depending or more dependence on this energy.  This could be over come by giving the know-how at individual house hold level or at village level so that they manage the same with proper storage devices like batteries for using the same for night lamps.  In day time while generation is good due to sun light, activities such as water pumping for drinking, water for irrigation, etc.. can be used. Each village can be adopted as solar village and all the roofs will be solar panels and will be connected to the village grid for common usage. In towns and cities, each apartment cluster can be one unit.

Similarly, government can take up the initiative of this additional solar power generated though huge plants in deserts, etc., to connect to the grid and use it for pumping water back in the hydro- electric plants and use this in night with more hydro- power generation.

This is the best method in my opinion and this cannot be materialised without Govt support.

Reward for Initiatives

idea posted by Shikha Malhotra Product Development Manager, Reliance Petroleum

Govt should definitely give various fiscal incentives to the manufacturers as well end-consumers out there to propagate solar plants and technology and to displace the old diesel generators, UPS and invertor system with solar-based systems.  This will create some excitement and people would love to do something which is unique and new with Rewards for the initiative taken from their side.

The plan is good as we always have in India and then we go into a phase of bad to very bad execution. So my suggestion would be as under

Let the solar power units being planned be of the distribution ended that is the subsidy  is for home and small installation and also there should be a method of monitoring the same at the user end.

As solar power is DC and there are lot of homes with UPS based systems the solar addon panel for the DC battery charging at the time of good sunshine and then the same is used at the time of outage.

Further if we plan for large solar farms I am quiet certain as to the same will be in the private sector and then the problems of interconnection and viability of the same will be a big question mark? and there is a chance that there will be a proposal for increasing of the tarrif and the drama that we are all aware of.

In USA in the nevada desert the palnt that are in operation is having good sunshine and still the power generation is being consumend but as it is possible only during the day so it again acts as a peaking plant.

We do not have enough so this is definitely welcome so is the initiative but until the fill implementation method is known we will not know about the benifits that the nation can have or only it will be like cases that we have seen and experienced before,

we have rural electrification program and proceeding well but where is the power for supply and who will maintain and where is the fund for the same, the whole project is badly executed in terms of the maintenance and sustainance issues.

Thanks

Invest in research to improve power distribution

idea posted by Prakash Saitwal Technical Support Manager, Aditya Birla Management Corporation P. Ltd.

The biggest hindrance in commercial use of Solar energy source is it's limitation in distribution. Or putting solar power in grid.

India should invest in research for technological solution to remove limitations in solar power distribution. This will open gates to commercial use of solar power on mass scale, and will prove

construct solar power plant

idea posted by Praveen varma Sr Manager, Reliance Industries

Hi Vineet,

Thanks for the informative link. It is nice to notice that GOI has finally decided to something on solar power. To my mind, distributing the subsidies at public level will lead to corruption. Hence Goverment should give the subsidies to the people, who are ready to put a solar farm to generate energy and the energy from this farms should be fed to State / National Grid through power purchase agreement. But still it is a good initiative.

Regards

Praveen

I will like to add Govt must construct a power plant on itself only instead of giving subsidies to people. The land of desert like Rajasthan and kachha may be used where the intencity of sunlight is more and sunlight is available for more time of the day. Solor cells are producing Dc supply which may be stores in batteries and after that by using dc to ac convertors and can be pump into grid ckt by step up the voltages at any required time.

Huge Initial Investment and consistancy in Working of Plant...

idea posted by Sampanna Shastry Deputy Manager- Marketing & Sales, Arani Power Systems Ltd

Solar Power is facing couple of Prolems for wide acceptance in Industrial as well House holds and Village levels:

1. For a Industrial Level the Major problem is the High Investment required for Technology as well Land required for the Project. Irrespective of High Power Purchase rate of Grid, Gud Depreciation benfits, Tax Holidays, MNRE Subsidies etc the technology is not widely accepted. Major reason being Less operating & working Hours of plant through out the year. Typically the Pay back of such Investment goes in the range of 7-8 years..

2. For House hold purpose the Investment is high but Power requirement is typically in the range of 5-10 KWe only so Technology also has problem of generating the Power of such Low capacity... Again getting subsidies at such small projects is also a problem...

3. for Vilage electrification this technology also has different problems such as First Problem Who will be the Investor..?? All Villagers..?? Panchyat or Muncipal corporations..?? Where this money will come from..??? and Lack of Awarenes and so many......

Therfore this Technology is facing problems in acceptance and has its own problems with different customers.....

Lack of awareness and others put above mite be few out of the bigger Issues realted to Acceptance..

Making compulsory to install solar power generation in all the private industries

idea posted by Ramakrishna Perumal Electrical Specialist Engineer,

If the governement provides subsidy to private industries for installing solar generator then the government also can make it compulsory for private industries to generate initially atleast part of their power requirments so that the demand for power requirement will reduced and later on the private industries can install solar generators for 100% power requirment so the power demand on conventional power generation will be reduce to great extent and there will be solution for climate change.

In my view Govt hould provide tax subsidies and other related benefits to the corporates, who are interested in the development of Soala Energy, Solar energy is very feasible at the present GHG emission conditions.

Create solar farms and parks

idea posted by Saleel Deshpande Sr.Architectural Co-ordinator, Dar Al-Handasah(Shair and Partners)

If this mission is sucessfully carried out I think India can be a leader.Well but Lack of infrastructure  ay prevent us from it. Government needs to start acquisition of lands from now and then thus while the execution of this plan starts the cost of land will not be a barrier in the cost of project....creating solar farms will obviously require hectares of land. Also creating solar parks will be a good idea which will inturn increase the awareness within the citizens of India and can thus promote use of natural energy.

There are different forms of renewable enrgy..which should be explored in the indian sub-continent like tidal power, hydro power, wave energy, wind energy, geothermal enrgy....if these energies are also utilized, then i think we can copeup with the energy requirements in the future.

INITIATING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN SOLAR ENERGY

idea posted by Bhavesh Kumar contract management, Govt Sector

Solar energy has not been tapped to the desired level by our own indigenous technolgy. Hence to achieve the target we have to have a strategy. We have to develop our own pool of sources which can develop the technology for tapping the solar power as we cannot depend on foriegn technology for such large scale goal.
