Most of the organizations who have spend huge amounts as costs in implementing some PM tool have mostly failed as the end user many not use as required by the tool. I can give many cases where a project management culture has been developed and only then a tool selected based on the used methodology. |

As there are so many project managenet tools available its difficult to choose or buy a software. I wonder where to start from. Can you give some tips in choosing the right project mangemet tools ? |

Be it a construction project , IT project or managing of an event, each is summation of the activities to be executed in a particular order ( scheduled) to be identified with means to achive their successs ful completion (resources) in optimum time period while effectively elimination of bottlenecks.
Project = Function (Activities,resources,time).
The main tool of project management lies in the alma matter of the Project Manager his experience,knowledge of methodologies.The project management soft wares use linear,nonlinear programs having the afore said variables of the quantified activities,time and resources associated with each one of them.
The Project management softwares are mere tools.It can be MS Excel,MSProject or PRIMAVERA.
Any way to one should have knowledge of Project methodology to generate Main Construction Program (MCP)
He should also know what management wants, for successful appraisal of project prgress for generating an Effective Progress report.

A clear vision is required from he management to select the best project management tools as per the requirement. Project manager should know which software project management areas will be automated, which product is likely to work and which not. Understanding this one can select the best PM tool. If you are given the cost of automated software project management tool implementation, then an emphasis should be on getting the software choice right the first time around considering the above criteria. |
