The holiday season is a favorite time for Indians to travel abroad. It’s also a favorite time for pickpockets, purse-snatchers, hotel burglars and other petty thieves whose business booms with the influx of unsuspecting and unprepared Indian tourists. If a traveller should find him or herself a victim of crime, certain safety steps can turn a potentially disastrous situation into a minor inconvenience. Safety while traveling should be top-of-mind for any traveller. Put your thoughts as how to resolve such an issue.

yes i do agree with this one, as Keeping low profile is very important for a traveller, and this would also be my best advice to all travellers whether it is domestic of international travel.

On the street

We go abroad and hardly resists ourselves in going out to the local market. Never wear expensive-looking jewellery. Carry only the cash and travellers cheques you need while away from your hotel. Carry wallets in front pockets or keep pockets securely fastened, with a pin or velcro if necessary. Wear handbags with the opening next the your body.

I was once robbed by an autorckshaw driver when i gave him a 100 rupees bill for the 40 rupees fare And to my surprise he immediately turned back and said Madam you have given me 10 rupees bill.

I was shocked as i never had 10 rupees bill that day! It happened all because i was talking to my mom in my native language and the driver could easily make out that i was from other region and i m a tourist! I could not do anything because the exchange of cash doesn't have any proof and i could hardly argue as I was scared of the locals there and it was getting dark!

So whenever you hand over cash to people..Be very attentive.

I was once robbed while making my way into an ATM. So avoid ATMs which are not well-lit and secure and quickly put cash out of sight, and be aware of “distraction thefts” by criminals working in twos or threes.

Cash is not the king

International trips require a few more precautions because travellers are unfamiliar with language, surroundings and customs. It’s easy to get lost, or at least distracted, as you’re trying to find your way. Unfortunately, this behaviour attracts the attention of pickpockets and other criminals. Travellers can minimize their risks by carrying only a small amount of cash, Cash is muggable money. What’s more, just like a poorly-lit ATM at night is not a safe place to get cash in India, it is even riskier in a foreign land.

Before departure

I always am susceptible about traveling abroad. So I take precautions before doing so. Leave copies of passport, travel documents and travellers cheques serial numbers in case of a problem at home with someone you trust. Don’t bring expensive jewellery which isn’t needed.

Some points in addition to the above idea will be to take along only the charge cards you really need; a driver’s license with photo for identification; and “in case of emergency” card with medical information; extra prescriptions and eyeglasses; travellers cheques in several denominations; and a small amount of the appropriate foreign currency.

Be on guard where you stay

Keep all valuables in the hotel’s main safe deposit box. Don’t display the sign requesting room cleaning service; it identifies the room as unoccupied. Don’t let strangers overhear your sightseeing plans or other schedules. This is important to make the trip pleasant and exciting.

Local Laws and Customs

idea posted by Nirmal Karan Product/Brand Manager, KingfisherAirlines

When you leave your home country , you are subject to the laws of the country you are visiting.  Therefore, before you go, learn as much as you can about the local laws and customs of the places you plan to visit.  Good resources are your library, your travel agent, and the embassies, consulates or tourist bureaus of the countries you will visit.  In addition, keep track of what is being reported in the media about recent developments in those countries.
