I deem that the following points are useful for Business Analyst 1. BA should know how to work smart rather than requirement gathering. 2. Passion towards new technology and its ideas 3. Don't stick with odd and old analytical concepts...merge with new technology 4. Make good contacts to know more about latest trend in the field. |

1. The BA should have very good communication and people management skills, so that he/she can collect the appropriate and to the point requirements from the business end users. BA is the person who deals with a lot of people from the client as well as the team involved in the project. 2. He/She should also have very good writing skills to document all the requirements in highly presentable manner to the development team as well as the business people. It should be understandable to the techies as well as the business end users. 3. BA should also be well conversant with the new technologies so that he should have some innovative suggestions for the proposed system. He needs to have good knowledge of IT. This helps to transfer the business requirements to the technical team. 4. BA needs to play a very important role in user training and make the end users comfortable on the new system/ application. 5. BA should also take care of some documentation for support and maintenance. |

A BA should understand the business process of the customer and bridge the need of the customer with the use of technology. |

Business Analyst is a generalized term i.e. creating a great confusion in Industry ( reason being people use it upto their knowledge bank ). I want to establish myself as a Business Analyst , worked for few years, have seen people in management level taking interviews and dont know a crap about business analysis in IT. After wondering (:) for about 2 years) and doing a lot of research on internet and after giving a lot of interviews in different organizations. Reached to conclusion that Business Analyst depends a lot on your domain knowledge ( can be E commerce, Web 2.0, Electrical, Banking etc etc). Its hard to find domain expertise with having Business Analysis skills too.
Summary is that a Business Analyst must have
- Requirement Gathering Techniques (understanding Business Process, Business Rules, Constraints, Relationships etc etc )
- Modeling techniques
- Documentation management techniques
- Some knowledge of Project Management
Note: Please do not expect Business Analyst having Technical Knowledge but must have knowledge of how to use software tools like MS project, Excel, MS Visio etc (also note IT is a vast term, using terms like IT knowledge is totally a bad option, which may be replaced by an option i.e. IT tools). Technology Knowledge is the job of system analyst.
Hope this helps

My experience says that a successful Business Analysts should posses "IT knowledge". A business Analyst should be able to understand which resources would be appropriate to help define and validate both requirements and specifications within a given project and product scope. This can only be done if he has an IT knowledge (understanding of various IT tools and product and interconnectivity and relationships between them. To be precise business analyst should be able to relate different IT products and connect each other. He should also be able to analyze it effects both +ve and -ve. This is one of the skills that an IT Business Analysts should posses or say should have IT knowledge. |

What I feel is after product is delivered , end user support is most important. The role of the business analyst is not to act on behalf of the training team, but to complement the training team's efforts with their knowledge of the business requirements Business analysts clarify any high-level questions that need to be addressed with the end users. |
