Today I went through a post which named “To educate a girl is to educate an entire nation”. This blog was talking about how an educated girl can help in building an educated country. It said,

1. An extra year of education boosts a girl’s future wages by 10 to 20 percent, while an extra year of secondary school boosts them by 15 to 25 per cent

2. When girls and women earn income, they typically reinvest 90 per cent of it in their family – compared to just 30 to 40 per cent of men’s income

3. When a girl in the developing world receives seven or more years of education she marries four years later, and has 2.2 fewer children

4. And each of these children is healthier – educated women are more likely to vaccinate their children, and of course to send them to school too. When you look at the effect of this happening for thousands of girls, the results are staggering. An increase of 1 per cent in the number of girls who have completed secondary education boosts annual per capita income growth – the rate at which the whole country’s economy is growing – by 0.3%. So if we educate girls, entire countries can raise themselves out of poverty more quickly.

But still, we can see the percentage of girls in secondary school is unacceptably low. Discrimination within the classroom is a huge issue, so I want to ask the users in this platform, what are the hurdles & solutions do you see now in terms of educating a girl in India?

Social Prohibitions

idea posted by Inani Sarkar Sales/BD Manager, Aricent

In many parts of our country, there is a fixed mindset against the development of Girls. This happens because of illiteracy and blind faiths. Because of these, neither the girl develops nor the society develops. I think these people should be taught first to educate their daughters.

I agree with Inaniji ! The original proverb in Telugu goes like this "If a girl is educated, the next 10 generations are taken care of !!" Thanks for a good posting.

It has been seen, that educated women tend to be better at motherhood too.

Illiteracy is the main issue

Every issue that our society faces is like a link of a chain. Each issue is connected to another, either directly or indirectly. The chain of issues in this society that we live in, the strongest link of that chain is illiterecy. Illiteracy is the mother of all issues as it gives birth to many other issues like poverty, unemployment, child labour, female foeticie, population burst and many more.

A Literate person will always understand his social resposibilities which includes girl education also.......So to solve any of the social problem, the root of the problem (illiterecy) should be solved first.

Absolutely right.

WE may expect that the now prevelaged women ( mostly from cities / town ) will help their counter parts from villages who are most under developped for so many reasons. Ways are many if strong earge is there. Mind : you are helping the entire Nation.

Hi Inani,

you are bang on target regarding education to girls, and as far as hurdles are concerned:-

  • feeling of what people in society will say if they send their girl outside their place .
  • what the hell will they do learning as they have to manage house and kids.

but let me remind you that most of the posts when written are viewed from the eyes of victim and lead to many wrong conclusion. I believe womens spending 90% compared to 30% of men is not acceptable, after all beauty parlor and makeup sucks up lot of money :).

The statement "To educate a girl is to educate an entire nation" sounds too much illogical and exaggerated. It could hold true if India would have had all the 100 crores of it's population females :D

But no doubt, girl's education is a necessary part of India's education program, similar to what it is for any person ( no matter male or female) not able to get proper education may be because of  economic, health, physical , regional or social problems. From a group of such people, filtering out candidates  just on the basis of sex is not just illogical but discriminatory too.

http://parwati-singari.sulekha.com/blog/post/2010/07/the-unique-indian-woman.htm This is the latest of my findings on woman's education. I would say education is important somehow we seem to focus on litracy more than education. In the mountains of silk route, islam was kept alive despite the communism and russians, this was essentially because the mothers educated the their children within the zennanah
