There are some trainers also who conduct training on Lateral Thinking, attending any of their sessions would be really good to understand how it really works and can be adopted by you in your professional as well as personal life to make decisions. Decision making becomes easier with all the people involved contributing to the process, so there is ownership also.

Please refer to the link, describing lateral thinking as defined by Edward De Bono.

Perceptibly it means not restricting your thinking process to one direction only. If you are looking out for solution to a problem, take a lateral track that is to look for the alternatives that may or may not necessarily be related to one another. At times, what is perceived to be right obviously may not be necessarily right. Often solution to a problem itself emerges from serendipity. Sometimes, solution to a problem lies in the intersection of various thought processes that may be part of internal or external domains (or both) of the problem space. It also means rise above biases and existing perceptions and create new perceptions if needed.  Basically, it suggests innovation in the abstract thinking process itself before getting into something concrete innovation.

Lateral thinking is a term coined by Edward de Bono, for the solution of problems through an indirect and creative approach. Lateral thinking is about reasoning that is not immediately obvious and about ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. Lateral thinking is a step-by-step method of creative thinking with prescribed techniques that can be used consciously.
