According to ABI research, the number of mobile devices transported every year, will get double within five years. This year, about 1.2 billion phones, media players, modems and netbooks have been shipped. ABI predicted these numbers can touch 2.25 billion by 2014. This jump is likely to be achieved on the back of growth in every other area apart from cellphones. Despite the increasing popularity of smartphones, the entire sector seems to be saturated enough and it is likely to grow at mere four percent.

Modems, such as 3G adapters, are likely to grow at about 40% each year while "ultra mobile devices" like media players and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) will grow as much as 67% every year. These devices have a small share now but may catch up as cellular carriers shift towards non-traditional data plans. Most of the providers, including most North American carriers often subsidize netbooks, are expected to provide similar treatment for tablet devices.

How do you think this increase will effect our life?

We will become more dependant on technology

idea posted by Kiran Kumar Reddy Business Analyst, SAP

It has been seen that, any new gadget launched in the market makes us completely dependant on it. But this news of their use getting doubled within 2014 indeed is a proof that people are getting completely dependant of new technologies. This is a clear cut proof that our future lifestyle will be completely technical.

I completely agree with the idea that as the no.of gadgets is increasing , we are spending most of our time with them. so , our life is becoming more private, less socialistic and getting away from outdoor activities.

Gadgets definitely have their utility but what I feel is there is a growing lust for such gadgets, this addiction might do more harm than good in a way or other.

Alienation form the real Social World

Too much of anything is Bad. I think excessive use of electronic gadgets will alienate a person from the real social world, leading to a situation were a person may not have real friends, except for their virtual world. This could also lead to depression.
