In a recent news educationist and former chairman of CBSE, Ashok ganguly said in today's times "educationists should embrace technology to bring transformational changes in schools and colleges". And yes he was right there, and moreover conventional method of teaching is not enought for students to fight global competition in this era. So what should be the role of technology in 21st century education, I mean how & where we can use technology to improve education? Do share your views on this.

Digital classrooms

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

I think there is too much of illiteracy in India mainly due to non available of good teachers across the country and no basic infrastructure, and in rural part of India the education which is being provided is pretty much outdated and it needs to be updated, due to time & money constraint from the Government's side its been really difficult for one to provide same kind of education that urban & rural kids get.

I remember one ad from Idea telecom service in which through mobile all the village schools  will be connected to a school in a city where teacher will be taking attendence and teaching them through the mobile phone, a brilliant idea, why not simply take a screen and a projector and give them a virtual classroom where they can even correspond with the teacher, and similarly even teacher can see the students. This will not only give quality education, but will also increase the literacy rate in the country, and will make sure that every body is getting the same level of education across the country.

when we don't have enough high quality teaching staff for our schools, that too when so many schools  being put up every now and then, there is no use in having digital classrooms. there is no quality at all in these so called international schools. what's the use in having air-conditioned class rooms when so many people in villages are not having even primary schools with proper building?why wasting lots of money in these high end schools in one place, instead building many schools in those places which don't have the luxury of a city?does quality education means sitting in AC rooms, having coffee days in schools?all these international schools copy from developed country's schools functionality  and they forget the basics. we have to improve all over rather than put up at one place.

I strongly support the discussion of using the technology at villages. On one hand, there is infrastructure in the villages and the other hand there is no quality power (electricity) supply in villages. If any body try technologies such as projector and virtual class rooms etc., the equipment either would not work or they will be damaged. This is the situation of India after 60 years of Independence.

It is quite interesting that we are talking about intrtoducing technology in the classerooms, more interesting because, it is in a nation that has not yet been able to distribute the light of education to all the nooks and corners. In my approach, drawing a single line conclusion about the same would be difficult. Rather, if we can do the same in multiple levels, I think that the approach could be more wholesome and realistic. We are in a generation today where we are seeing WORLD SCHOOLS. Talking about implementation of technology out here would be mocking at ourselves, as they have already introduce the best. Also, talking about the rear parts of the country, where education is still considered lavish, technology ios still a mocking. Dhanbad happens to be my place of work and, though not actively, but rearly, i work in a rural market, or lets call it U-ral( a transition between Rural and Urban). In many of the sorrounding places, education is seriously a lavish "aminity". So, I suppose that the first challenge in areas like this is to implement the basic education. As for the modern and the Urban cities, we can think about implementing technology, digital classrooms and the other e-learning tools.

One more thing that I would like to draw your attention to is that, technology is seriously amazing and can do miracles, but there are certain areas, where human beings are necessary.

Well, its a perfect idea to make use of technology in education sector as it will increase the access to quality education for faraway students, but all actions should be executed with perfect planning and infrastructure else it will result in a situation as shameful as the CAT exam this year which posed dents in Brand India's Image .

I think that before going ga ga over the technological implementations we should start from ground zero. I acknowledge the fact that ideas of digital classrooms etc are very very gr8 but they have no meaning if a villager doesnt have anything to eat, nowhere to sleep and no permanent job/work to run his home.  He will think 100 times before sending his child to school / digital classrooms because instead he can utilize him for his personal help....

So first preference should be given to basic needs and amenities.. then only all these good things will follow...

Add visual and pictorial content for meaningful education

Well, all that I understand, if a class room have a computer with internet connection and a projector, they can get to see things which they are made to read. Now its for the teacher to take initiative and slowly keep adding best, latest pictures, audios and videos for each topic that are being taught. You know the only difference between a good school and a bad school is that they do not have the teaching resources. Internet provides the best answers to all queries.

I also need to address the people who say work upon the basics. I think, when we are talking about Technology, the constraints are bound to be there. You cannot talk technology to people who don't even have books to take home. So technology can go to small cities which already have the basics there but can compete with latest if compatible technology is provided. On technology, I am definitely not talking about remote village and poverty but places which can be a nearest reach for them. We underestimate people when we talk like bringing basics. They don't want our sympathy. People are capable of themselves, we just need to decentralize and reach out for education and I see it happen, when I drive from Delhi to my small city Rampur in UP.

Definitely availability of computers and net will lead to better and fast education anywhere. As we are aware of there is abundance information available on net one have to just put the word and will get A to Z of the thing.

when it comes to utmost "technologising" the education system ,the first thing to consider is uniformity ,and to bring it ,digital classrooms are definately a major source if it can revamp pedagogy and produce the desire result,by way of euipping the students with  rural and less developed with the same skills.it is possible if ,organised and implemented well and honestly.the next thing to modify is the teaching methodology which needs to be made more interactive and practice based with vocational traning to imparted as compulsary subject rather than optional.furthermore, the feedback system should be in place where students and there parents could post there queries, remarks and suggest things that can included or corrected so as to involve parents equally with the educational system  and make participate in there child development then being mere resource provider.

First make available daily meal to the rural students

idea posted by ASOKE KUSARI Domestic Private Banking-Executive/Manager, A large leading PSU Bank - India

After you have arranged a square meal to the rural students, you start chronologically as follows :-

1) Arrange them shelter and clothing 2) Give them good drinking water and basic sanitation 3) Give them a 'pacca' school bulding with wide classrooms and a playground 4) arrange one teacher for every 40 nos of students 5) provide them text books ( pls limit the numbers ) etc.

And .. then ... connect all villages with electricity and Broad-band. Connect the class-rooms with Digital Vedio-projectors and V-sats for remote learnings.

... and then India marches ahead in e-learning.

Computerised Schools

idea posted by sharmili priyadarsini B.Tech/B.E. student, PSNA college of engineering and technology

The only way to use technology in an effective way is the computerization of schools. As Dayanand said, only then the quality education reaches the rural. The Government can take it into an account since is not a big deal interms of Money. In Tamilnadu, the elementary education is slowly getting computerised and it is a better idea to extend the same for the higher.
