In today's information age Technology allows us to stay connected with co-workers without being in their physical presence. Many companies have implemented a relatively new space-planning philosophy known as "hoteling". Hoteling is when office space is provided on an as-needed basis. Instead of keeping cubicles or offices specifically reserved for certain individuals, they can be used by anybody in the company at a given time. Some businesses are taking even more drastic steps and requiring all their employees to work from home. The cost-savings can be compelling, not to mention the great commute. These ideas are becoming more popular for good reason, but they have downsides as well.

So, using a brick & mortor office helps businesses because....

Lack of face to face interaction with co-workers

idea posted by Namrata Pathak Accounts Manager, American Express

Instant messaging, email, telephone and video-conferencing are exciting technologies. They allow us to easily communicate with people all over the world. These technologies, however, are not a substitute for face to face interaction. Even if you have a live video feed of the person you are talking to, you still cannot read their body language the same way that you can in person. Some experts claim that as much as 93% of what we communicate is through body language. If only even half of that were true, that would be a lot of communication we would be missing if all our interactions were through electronic devices. Anybody who uses email has experienced the frequent miscommunications that occur. Not being able to see the facial expressions of the writer of the email or hear the inflections of their voice can lead to misunderstandings and even create hostile situations.

Working together in an office can help create a feeling of team unity and enhance morale. Co-workers can encourage each other, provide insight into difficult projects or problems and connect with each other personally in a way that is difficult to do through electronic devices alone. It is also convenient to have your co-workers right down the hall if your electronic communication devices are having problems.

Helps builds Strong Relations with Clients...

A traditional thought always dwells in the minds of the customers that if they are able to visit the office of the service provider / company and deal in person , feels more satisfied rather than on phone or via e- mails. Though mediums like phone and e-mail are more convenient and just a click away from them and on the contrary helps organizations save cost of infrastructure. But at the same time fails to buy conviction of majority of people at the same time. Thus Brick and Mortar helps business to spread its roots rapidly and effectively.

Phone lines and web servers occasionally go down. Connections can be interrupted. In some types of work, losing an internet connection or a phone line connection can mean an abrupt end to an otherwise productive day. If a team member that you now are unable to connect with were just down the hall instead of across town or across the world, then you might be able to make productive use of your time instead of waiting to hear back from your internet service provider. Promotion opportunities may also be more abundant when you have the chance to network face to face with people higher up the food chain within your organization. So theres a reason why people work in offices.
