Over 150 people are dead, 400 people were injured and more than 500 still missing. Some 10,000 people have been affected by Leh flash floods.

Villagers who were lucky to survive are returning to find that their homes and sources of livelihood that have been washed away. The border roads organisation men are trying hard to connect Ladakh with the rest of the world. But massive damage is been dones with these floods, its not anything we have come across floods happened in low level regions till now and not anywhere in the mountain terrains like Ladakh & Leh with those cloudbursts.

So, What actions should we take to make sure there is minimal damage during the floods??

Flood modelling and analysis of terrain resolution

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

The number of flood disasters has increased worldwide in recent decades. Identifying the optimal resolution or scale at which to represent digital terrain models (DTMs) is critical in order to improve our ability to accurately and efficiently model floods.

The effectiveness of DTMs derived from light detection and ranging and with the help of Indian Geological Survey data at commonly available should be properly assessed. A quantitative diagnostic method based on measuring the distance flooded if applied for evaluating the horizontal extent and internal pattern of flooding, and with the use of additional diagnostic metrics like, (area, volume, and shape) along with a visual graphic assessment enhance the evaluation of flood modeling results. With these data available in hand we can make sure that people are evacuated in certain climatic conditions as we will be knowing the impact and damage that will be happening if something like this happens.

Impossible to predict nature's vagaries such as this.

idea posted by Abraham Paul Senior Telecom Consultant, FCOMNET- Future Groups

It is almost impossible to predict and take preventive steps against most of nature's vagaries. Happenings such as these and other remind us again and again how puny we the humans are against the might of nature.

It also help to remind all of us that the 'hallaballoo' being made day in day out in the name various trivial things are totally  meaningless. The real power to make and break our life is in the hands of the Almighty and we should always remember this in every actions and reactions.
