I am rewriting the article written by us & published in 'The address" - Times of India on Fri, 15th May'09 Ten points to remember while designing a house: 1. BUDGET - Create a preliminary budget estimate by accounting for all the labour and material it takes to complete the project. This is the most important part of any project. 2. Chart out the actual REQUIREMENTS and comforts of the number of people who will be living in the house/home. 3. Design should encourage NATURAL CROSS VENTILATION & DAYLIGHT. Using large mirrors adjacent to windows brings in the much needed natural light into the room. 4. Avoid verbal planning or unscaled sketches. A well planned LAYOUT results in effective utility of space. This helps in determining the proportionate sizes of different furniture pieces in relation to the space available. 5. PLAN the materials & colour combination to be used IN ADVANCE, before moving out to shop. This helps you reduce confusion when given ample choices. This way you avoid creating a clutter and repenting later. 6. Keep AESTHETIC APPEAL in mind, always. This can be achieved by every element you bring in. eg. Colour combination, Direct & indirect lighting, fabrics, mirrors, plants, water bodies, artefacts, etc. 7. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE is a must. Ask if you must, instead of making mistakes. So what if you are a professional? Asking will only enhance your knowledge, save you a lot of costly mistakes and your reputation too. 8. Keep in mind that a GOOD BALANCE between budget & material is to be achieved. LIFE EXPECTANCY of the end product is to be kept in mind in this process. Eg. There is a vast difference between the cost of particle board, knock down, cheap, imported furniture and quality, custom made furniture. But so is the life expectancy. 9. Completing the project in a reasonable TIME without compromising on QUALITY is extremely important. 10. The Design CONCEPT is arrived at, keeping in mind all the above points. The theme may be post modern or ethnic, it has to flow with all the above constraints.

According to me in the first place you need proper plan, whether you are going to do it yourself, or call in the experts in this field you need to sit down and make a plan of what you would like, maybe it's an extension or new kitchen, Be fully prepared and highly detailed in design plans before beginning construction.

If you want to do any sort of remodeling or renovation, you first have to get planning permission; they will ask all sorts of question, but depending on the size and what it is for they will agree and this usually means waiting for about a month. You know how it works in India.

Try and have a budget for each job that needs doing, because it is quite easy to go over budget when it's not absolutely necessary, So in My opinion Budgeting properly for each job is very much necessary.... |
