What are the 10 ways to stay safe at the construction site?

The best ally that any tradesman can have when working on a construction site is his common sense. Being aware of your surroundings and the potential threats and hazards will keep you alert to what is going on around you. More accidents happen on site when people have dropped their defensive guard than at any other time.

There is a lot said & done for safety but still we see a lot of injuries/accidents at project site.

I dont wanna discuss a scenario where PPE's are not available because thats not the point.

Accident do happen when all PPE's are available.

The ignorance towards compliance is then become prime factor that attributes to the potential risk.

Beside PPE's, the site must be safe as people are working there.

Identification of danger zones (material yards, lifting areas etc)

Proper scaffolding for access

well protected & defined pathways

Guarded railing for open floors

temporary blocking of all openings in floor.

Installation of fire extinguishers at designated places

Availibility of first aid box at every floor if building is high rise, otherwise a reachable place for every one.

Guarded loading & unloading platforms/bays

Designated area for inflammable materials.

An attitude of DONT PASS BY means, notify immediately if see any safety violation.

The most important of all: safety induction for all will be a must before entering to any construction site.

Emergency number of important personell, first aid procedures to be displayed at many places on project.

Regular tool box meetings.

Actually there are no 10 ways to stay safe, as requirement of safety do differ from project to project.

They are way different in residential/commercial, high rise, plant & oil field.

Purposeof safety knowledgein  a construction site a to z should be made aware to all.Make them aware of various hazards that had happened elsewhere .make them believe that it can be avoided.there should be safety auditting and every month in turn safety enforcing scout boys should be selected from all trades.

Wearing suitable workwear whilst on site is a must. Gone are the days when it is acceptable to simply wear a pair of jeans, baggy t shirt (or even no top at all) and a pair of shoes or trainers. Accidents can occur in so many different ways whilst on site and you should always wear workwear that offers you a level of protection better than standard day to day clothing. The workwear that you choose should be both lightweight enough for you to be comfortable to wear all day as well as being made of a material that will withstand cuts and tears from sharp items.

DEVELOPING A SAFETY CULTURE AND GIVING HONOUR AND RESPECT TO ALL THOSE  PROMOTING THIS CULTURE AND ATHEN STRICT IMPLEMENTSATION OF HSE RULES WILL  ONLYTURN  THE TABLE.

One has to transform the idea/thoughts to all workforce that when the manpower starts to work then they have to return to their family with safe.The organisations has to inforce safety laws strictly.The site operatives should take care of their team during the work sequences.

First of all correct PPE is hardly made available to the workers.Available PPe is mostly hardly used giving reasons that those are very uncomforatble during use , Mostly in summer and in difficult working conditions. No proper traing.Non availability of a trained and experienced Safety Officer at the Project Site. Lack of awareness .

Safe working conditions can be best expected if each & every person of the Execution team (Comprising of not only the Executing Agency but also the Client,the Consultant as also the Third Party engaged  at the project site ) consider themselves as A SAFETY OFFICER. that is an active involvement of everybody in safety procedures implication

For all the activities at site there is a specific Procedure or a guided METHOD STATEMENT. Neglecting the course as per the specified method by cutting corners and adopting short cuts may lead to accidents sometimes FATAL

As a engineer,if we are working in any company we know the safety measures but we cannot expect our labourers knows everything, if u are a site Engineer u will able to teach how to handle vibrator at the time of pouring,likewise safety officers have to teach safety measures,daily housekeeping,providing safety classes,how to use safety equipments,maintaining records,providing first aid,how to handle fatal accidents,safety is not a white collar job,it is a vital job of handling hundreds of labours.
