The usage of plastic & paper products is on high. The consumption rate has also grown exponentially. As end users we don't think about is so seriously until the final damage is done. Plastic products end up as litter that fouls the landscape, and kill thousands of marine mammals every year that mistake the floating bags for food. Plastic bags that get buried in landfills may take up to 1,000 years to break down, thus contaminating soil & water.

Though paper products are bio-degradable the space & production energy consumed is higher than plastics. Further transportation also becomes a problem in case of paper bags. Production of more paper bags will speed up cutting of more trees & thus degradation of environment.

Thus, what are the alternatives for paper & plastic? Share your views...

Carry your own bags

idea posted by Kavitha Shankar Sr/Principal Coresspondent, ABC

Every individual should carry their own bags to the grocery shop. This act will help tremendously in the reduction of plastic & paper bags usage. We all are pretty aware of this fact but due to the feeling of shame or fake show up we don't do it. We want other's to take the initiative & prefer to follow them. But, guys if u want to see a change then be the change first.

Thus, I would suggest everybody to carry their bags for doing shopping.

Use Jute Bags

idea posted by Kumara Swamy Project Associate, IIIT-H

Everybody can use jute bags instead of paper bags. This may help Indian farmers, as the Indian farmers are in deep crisis. I request every member of this community to use the jute or cloth bags instead of plastic bags and also promote the same. This will boost up Indian products in turn Indian economy even.

I agree with this completly, coz it really becomes impractical in carrying own bags, Just is a perfect substitution, as it give a boost to the just industry agriculture in getting back the number 1 just producer in the world and the just waste can be used in lot of other products that are very much useful for the environment.

This is one of the best alternative to avoid using both plastic and paper bags. This will give a boost to the jute growers also. I fully endorse this idea

Using jute bags can be a better alternative for both paper and plastic bags. Plastic bags can not be properly decomposed and leads to pollution and with paper bags we are not always comfortable since they have less strength. Jute bags can solve both these problems.

Although jute bags can be quite expensive but their benefits are far better than their price...

Cloth or jute both are good and reusable, washable and lasting.

The best alternative!!. Cloth bags are longer lasting, could be made into designer( :)) catergory, thus spawning a new industry. We have however become used to the idea of getting plastic bags at every outlet that even if there is no need for one, we tend to ask for one (as it comes free!!)

The other alternative would be to ensure a proper recycling mechanism for all plastic bags by raising awareness amongst users or waste collectors. A difficult task, but achievable with the right kind of initiatives!

IT for paper and cotton or similar products instead of Plastics

All communication and storage of data s can be done through computer science. Plastic can be replaced by cotton or by products of the plants. hence the green plants can be saved to beet the raising tempracture of the universe.

carry your cloth bags

idea posted by s.baalu Consultant, XYZ LTD

Our elders were very comfortable in carrying cloth bags for anything and everything wherever they went. They pre planned the requirement and of course the sie of bag/bags to be carried.we are lazy to carry the same and want the vendor to give everything from Razors to Micro wave oven.Because of our laziness or lack of interest to carry our own bags we allow the vendor to substitute cloth bags with carry bags which are thrown into dustbins or on the road(Jwellery dealers give cloth bags)leading to pollution of all kinds.Let us get back to the days of our elders and try to minimise the effect of pollution.

In some places cups made with leaves are used.

Usage of banana leaves or other leaves  can help in reduction of paper plates, sometimes tharmocol cups.

production control

idea posted by manikanta raj Deputy Manager Finance, project financing, leading Financing company

govt. should set up controlling authority in india, and should specify the volume rate and see the production levels of new plastic is not over crossed the specified volume and strictly monitor these levels, by keeping all plasitc raw material production under its control.

Result of which plastic recycling will be increased and waste management quality will be automatically increased in the people which solves the 95% of the plastic problem.

Earthernware, Jute, Metal, Electronic Storage, and Recycling

idea posted by Shahnawaz Islam PR & Media Relations Manager, National Institute of Smart Governance

It depends on the item actually.

Alternatives to plastic usage:

Jute: for bags
Metal/Glasss for bottles
Earthern for cups, mugs, jugs,
plates: Banana Leaf or metal plate or earthern plate for plates

Alternatives for paper:
Use the internet and TV for news
Read electronic books instead of paper books
Send email instead of faxes
Use Jute bags instead of paper bags
Scan and keep documents online and on PC instead of xeroxing documents

We also need to majorly do recycling by which we will use recycled plastic and paper thus reducing introducing of new plastic and paper.

Optimum usage of both products

idea posted by Purvi Ghosh Marketing analyst, Percept Advertising

As end users we should be also concerned about the damage these products will have on the ecosystem. We are a part of the different cycles in the bio-sphere & if any cycle is disturbed by our consumption behaviour then we will endanger the life of every living being.

Thus, we should find the best possible way to use these products optimally.

Plastic has advantage of reuse-ability and hence they became popular. Recent past as the cost of plastic bags has come down drastically this fact is forgotten.  It is better to educate people and put some levy on using new plastic bags.

I feel reusable cotton carry bag will be far more ideal thank both plastic and paper ones.Advantage of cotton bags over paper is it can be washed even using soap and also folded and carried even in the hand bag. It can even be made from old cloths
