Urban population in India has grown almost five times in five decades. Most of our cities were self sufficient in meeting their water needs from the extensive urban water bodies to supply water to citizens. Today these water bodies have completely disappeared. So many started thinking of rainwater harvesting.  What are the best practices of rain water harvesting?

Cleaning of water bodies like ponds and lakes.

idea posted by malladi madhukumar Senior Manager- Marketing, Cement company

To some of the Unrab as rual places water bodies like  ponds and lakes cater to the water storing requirements. Such ponds and lakes should be cleaned of weeds and desilting and capacity enhancements should be done. Week bunds should be strengthened  sothat floods and heavy rains does not effect the bunds. These kinds of works should be budgeted, planned and completed before the onset of the monsoon. These practices by Local bodies, district administrations and participation of local people in these activities yeilds good results for water harvesting/ water storing.

This is really an appropriate time to takeup above works.

Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting

idea posted by Anjali Bhatia Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

According to me rooftop rain water harvesting is good and easy to implement. The main objective of rooftop rain water harvesting is to make water available for future use. Capturing and storing rain water for use is particularly important in dry land, hilly, urban and coastal areas. Doing this will help us to reduce runoff to drains, avoid flooding in roads and reduce ground water pollution.

Separate water tanks should be erected during rainy days for rainwater harvesting.

If this is done on large scale by large number of dwellers whether it is small house or big houses it saves lots of water as well as energy for civic bodies and residents.

I agree with anjali's vews but to some extent, we have to think on a broader spectrum, how much is the percentage of roof rain water drainage/collection as compared to  the percentage of rain water drained off ground surface on to roads and common drains. We have to look for solutions which will prove successful in holding ground surface drainoff flowing onto the roads or i shall say out of a particular plot area.one simple solution can be to keep out of paving/tiling as much as possible withing the plot and keep it vegetated in form of grass/lawn or shrubs and bushes (imp. big trees cannot be an alternative to shrubs or bushes or lawn to hold ground water),provide proper drainage layout to collect and retain the ground surface water. this calls for a substantial role of landscapes architects and mechanical engineers in rain water harvesting.

Tube wells

idea posted by Abhik Datta Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

I think tube wells are the cost effective methods of rainwater harvesting. In areas where the shallow aquifers have dried up and existing tubewells are tapping deeper aquifer, rain water harvesting through existing tubewell can be adopted to recharge the deeper aquifers. If the roof area is more, a filter pit may be provided. Rainwater from roofs is taken to collection/desisting chambers located on ground. These collection chambers are interconnected as well as connected to the filter pit through pipes. The water that is collecter from the roof is stored in the well.

Yes Abhik you have hit the nail on the head, tube wells are very important, but there also we have constraints and those can be ....the underground stream need not be available everywhere, and this causes frustration to the land owner as he thinks he has wasted thousands of rupees going for the tube well, and he gets no rewards or very little rewards after going 50 to 100 metres, while some people are quite lucky to get water table at few metres. But the above examples do not solve our problem of rain water harvesting. For this the eisting tube wells shud be first harvested and nurtured well to increase the under ground water table. Also one important thing to be observed and followed is ...tubewells shud be semi private by law...for example...if one tube well is available in between 2-3 plots then it becomes a common entity and shud be available for use to all the 2-3 plots, and at the same time rain water from all these plots shud be properly drained in to this common tubewell for its harvestings or nurturing, this is why i call it as semi private as this calls for a common authority to monitor and control this activity.

Build check dams

Build check dams on the outskirts and divert that water to ponds catering for water needs.

Architects Should study the underwater geological plans available with the authority and those shud be incorporated in the building permission plans,at the same time if a tube wel is already existing then that shud be located in the plans and proper rain water harvesting plan shud be submitted to the corporation(s) (plans duly prepared by landscape architects and Mechanical engineers-with valid registration numbers), these plans shud be strictly followed and adhered to and executed as shown and approved by the authority.
