The process of renovation can be mind-bending depending on its design and also on the main problem on its cost. Whether we do the work ourself or hire a general contractor, going over whole-house renovation budget is a nightmare for every homeowner. While cutting costs on our whole-house remodel can seem like an unobtainable dream, it is possible for it to become a reality. If we decide to remodel or renovate, many expense come by its ways such that it nearly cause us to think, "It would have been better if I had build a new house".

So, while remodeling a house, what are the better ways to cut down the cost?

Reuse instead of buying new

idea posted by Pradeep Khanna Construction-Heavy, DLF

In my opinion, major cost is involved in material costs. While remodeling, adopt a similar design such that same fixtures and materials can be used again. Buy recycled fixtures and lightly-used fixtures and building materials. You can find these items at stores selling salvaged goods or materials that contractors donated. Usually such materials are sold for a more affordable price than the home-centers stores.

Synchronisation with the old model/plan

idea posted by Kunal Das Sub Assistant Engineer, Public Works Directorate, Govt. of West Bengal

i)   Suppose we are going remodel some rooms in a new one. so, if we keep the window and door openings as previous one, we could use the window and door frames of the old building, cutting the cost.

ii) sometimes orienting bathrooms or W/C in different position may be costly, due to the previously existing Septic tank / soak pit.

iii) In load bearing wall structures, special attention should be kept on the fact that the line of walls above are on the line of walls below. other wise special costly measures to be taken.

so we should study the previous and existing model and remodel accordingly, to cut the cost.
