Workplace hostility can often be traced to attitudes that have little to do with the current employment situation in which workers find themselves. Deep-seated feelings of hostility toward other people because of their gender, skin color, sexual orientation, political beliefs, or other factors are often firmly in place long before the person begins working at your company.

So, what are the common causes for workplace anger & hostility?

Though I am in full agreement with you, I cannot zero-in on this single point. Other choices and many other factors too play a very vital role in aggravating the situation. The problem is BIGGER. These points, we discuss, are only some of the symptoms.

Lack of dedication

i beg to defer with that favoritism and partiality based on gender bias is the route cause of anger or hostility. The work place need people of high caliber who devotes much of his or her time in productivity.

I fully agree with you,Sir.

Of late, dedication has become a rare commodity.Lack of character is lack of dedication. This one trait(Lack of dedication) is enough to destroy the whole system.

Dedication is a protective shell consisting of conflicting attitudes. The lack in it distracts one to negation and goads the feeling of inadequacy which result in hostility, aggressiveness, anger

Dedication is like acid it will dissolve all other ii factors.Lack of --will create a medium that will allow all germs to breed.

Impartiality is the most effective preventive against hostility.

In any organization, the differences of opinion are common among the members. It cannot be completely avoided. Anger and hostility among the members in organization can lead to very unpleasant results. It could spoil the healthy atmosphere, affect production and make expansion projects impossible. But anger and hostility among the members would not develop unless any person or group has reason to believe that the management is partial. Of course, sometimes, this is also imagined by the members or the so-called 'leaders' would sow the seeds of dissension in their minds and incite one group against another, so that they can reap cheap personal benefits. So the management should be doubly careful in this matter. And, the impartiality should be very open and obvious. The management should not give room to others to mislead the members in this regard by twisting reality. By this, anger and hostility can be avoided to a great extent.

Inability to have an understanding of the Job

Often times if the employee is slow to catch up on the job given and his/her colleagues understand and perform better that can give rise to hostility and anger. It may be proper training has not been provided to the employee.

I do support. This is one very important reason.

Competition, Favoritism and lobbying among employees

idea posted by Shridhar Chandru Business Developement Manager, ERP Consulting Company
the root cause competition, Competing employees add value to the work but end of they spoil the environment. This leads to groupism through which they wish to have a collective bargain which in turn leads to lobbying. If this situation continues everything else happen at workplace except the actual work.

causes of anger/hostility in the office

idea posted by Kailash Thakur Admin/Facilities Manager, retd

apart from the ideas expressed by all rectable members regarding causes of anger /hostility in the office, other factors r too important, like unnecessary interferance in the functioning of the staffs by seniors, always criticising or fault finding habit of the seniors in his subordinate staff, discouraging attitude of the seniors & above all not to express a single word of praise for good work done of his juniors.

Workplace anger and hostility

idea posted by Denis Thomas Varghese Instructor, Air Force

Workplace anger & hostility may be outcome of doing things in shortcut and to please bosses for petty gains. Every organisation is built on four pillars of fair competition, faith on the system, giving back to the society and renumeration to employees. If any one is broken there is anguish, hatred and hostility. No apple polishing, No unfair obliging but responsibility towards the organisation in which you are working will help it grow and will built a healthy atmosphere for self and system.

Lack of proper job definition

idea posted by Karthik Sai Sundaram Senior Project Engineer, Qatar Petroleum

In most companies, the juniors are expected to do what the Boss says i.e. Boss is always right. Sometimes the Boss asks juniors to do something which is beyond their job or gives deadlines which are difficult to achieve. This leads to built in frustration and this frustration over a period of time when coupled with office "games"' leads to hostility and anger. Many a times the anger is displaced and is not expressed on the person who is cause of the frustration and this leads to vicious cycle and the whole work environment is destroyed.

Jealousy,Groupism based on Language,Region

idea posted by raghavan khadri HR Manager, ftpl p ltd
many might have come across or may be a victim due to the anger and hostility at the work place due to above idea where a particular group of employees belonging to a particular region or speak a particular language gang up against others irrespective of their level in the organization and make a systematic campaign to denigrate the OTHER individually and collectively. One may be shocked to learn that such negative attitude has and is capable of stalling the progress of the not only the individual but the whole organisation!? Persons who have /are working in big organisations located in deep south and Eastern states or in the organisations where persons from these region are predominantly dominant might have the experience of this. MIND THAT I AM NOT BIASED AND HAS VERY GOOD FRIENDS FROM THESE REGIONS!.
