According to me shortage of skilled workforce affects every industry, so it is not a surprise that one of the greatest challenges plaguing the hospitality industry is the unavailability of quality workforce in different skill levels. The hospitality industry has failed to retain good professionals. So this is a major problem for a HR.

The top management is not ready to pay good salary and normal working hour(8/9hours) like other industries. Instead of that they paying less salary, extra working hours(more than 12hrs to even a whole day like 7am to 11pm. moreover they taken under nineteen guys and giving basic trainings and less salary.but the graduate in hotel management guys looking for some descent perk, with normal working hours. currently the low level management and staff are not enjoying their life, not possible to spend time with family & friends, it is a stressful Industry. Till the hotel owners & top/ middle management peoples not taken any step or not changed their principles & adamants, the industry never shine / operating good & peace fully. with this task or challenges, high staff turnover, high pressure, etc, are the challenges faced by the HR managers in the hotels
That might be the most important issue facing the HR department. It is how to find, motivate, and retain skilled employees. It might be equally important here to mention that firing skilled employees creates an inevitable dilemma if those employees can not adapt with the existing staff.

i would rather say that due to the shortage of employess and over flowing of customers/tourists the quality of service will be heavily affected because when the work load increases it always seen that the employess performances goes down which may be either intentional or unintentional.. but ultimately the HR division has to suffer such issues and held responsible for causing damage to their company's brand name.... |

i think Mr. Akram is right. I have no idea about Hotel management, but lemme have a try:)
Quality is the key concept of any sector for that matter,, say for Ex: If the interior of the hotel is good and the service is good people never take too much interest in appreciating it, but if there is no Cleanliness or a good interior then they are ready to refuse the hotel for that time. Quality is always a main key in hotel management now HR is finding difficult to satisfy its customers in Quality matter,it may be due to lack of good communication between people, or Employees dissatisfaction. So it is the job of HR 2 handle both employees as well as customers, HR should never think that Serving customers is not their cup of tea. they should have a track on both and help the management to hav a healthy environment.
Controlling the Staff turn over, and Hiring / recruiting qualified graduates & skilled workforce.

Those in the areas of kitchen, viz., chef, cooks, waiters, masalchies, etc. are forced to work under severe pressure, especially, they are forced to work on broken duty, with a break of about four-five hours in the evening, forcing employees to be in the vicinity of work place, not allowing them to handle their personal chores. The other reason is those working in hotels less than 3-star status are not provided wages on par with their counter-parts working in 5-stars, etc. and pitiably they are not provided variable DA allowed under industrial index (CPI) and interim reliefs when there is inflation. Those who are in front-office, PR, Business Promotion, Accounts, Material Management, Maintenance, etc. have wider options available in Aviation industry, and other corporates in service industry, especially MNCs, who also pay them well. Therefore, there is a great problem of controlling attrition, and getting the skilled manpower.

In a recent survey conducted it said that the hotel industry is facing heavy shortage of rooms. It is estimated that the current requirement is of 1,50,000 rooms. Though the new investment plan would add 53,000 rooms by 2011, the shortage will still persist. so this will add more woes to a HR.
