Mobile learning is that learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens with the modern mobile technology. Here mobile technology is used for learning instead of sitting in a class and learning. Mobile phones connected to wireless networks enable mobility and facilitate mobile learning. Mobile technologies support learning experiences that are collaborative, accessible, and integrated with the world beyond the classroom. What are the challenges in mobile learning?

Lack of access to technology

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

I think that the main challenge in mobile learning is lack of access to technology across student populations. There are places still in India where latest technology has not reached. So it would be difficult for the students in that area to go along with mobile learning. Every students may not be having mobile and some times there will not be network coverage.

Its basically a good idea and any new technology has to go through the learning curve and same goes to this idea as well.  Initially there will be problems n hurdles in implementations and understanding it and over the period, people will get used to n prefer more this than the conventional.  But what ever the technology advancements are availble the learning period is not going to be diminished.

I agree with you Mr. Shyamal. There are students who even don't know about mobile learning. So before implementing the technology, the students and the faculties should be made aware of the process used and how it works. So that they will utilize it to the fullest.

Apart from what Samir has said i think it would require additional learning curve for non-technical students and faculties. They might not be used to new mobile technologies and may not be knowing how to use it. So it might require additional training for the students as well as faculties on these areas.

Train up the teachers first on their role and goal

idea posted by Amit Sengupta Corporate Advisory Manager, Yamazaki Mazak

First thing first i.e the urge to learn. Our teachers no longer have an idea that their goal is to build better citizens. Transfer of knowledge has become commoditised.

When we see that a 15 year old in our society moves around with enough social compassions - "e" as a transfer vehicle of knowledge will be just as fine.

Discomfort in using the Mobile

SMS is like the old age Pagers - which is obsolete now. Through a book, at a time your are able to read about 100 to 150 lines, it is not about reading - it is learning/studying - referning "N" number of times. Mobile phone has its own features and it can not be the instrument for learning. Every inventions have their own intended use. Like, mobile phone can have the facility for video, photo features but can not replace or substitute the camera.
